It's that time of year again! The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2012, the premier international mathematics contest for high-school students, is being held in Mar del Plata, Argentina this year. In this year's IMO IMO, 551 contestants from 100 countries are competing in a grueling 2-day exam; each day, they are allotted 4.5 hours for 3 problems. Contestants must not only solve these very difficult problems, but must write up rigorous proofs to be submitted for grading.
Each problem is graded on a 7-point scale, for a maximum score of 42. Coordination (in which team coaches argue with graders/judges for more partial credit) will be taking place later this week, so expect scores by the end of the week or so; China, the USA and Russia have traditionally been among the top teams, while countries like Korea (both of them), Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Iran, Romania, and Germany often do quite well.
This year's US team looks quite strong; it returns three of its six members from last year's #2 team, which earned six gold medals (top 1/12 of contestants)--a first since 1994, when the US team earned an unrivaled 6/6 perfect scores. (Also, at least a few US team members have teamliquid accounts :D ) Good luck to them!
News: 7/10: Day 1 just finished; problems can be found here.
7/11: Day 2 finished! Link above has been updated. Results should be out within a few days.
7/15: Results have been released here! Note that 42 is a full individual score (so 252 is a full team score).

| Would have been nice if my school remotely supported doing this, looks like it would be pretty interesting. |

Hmm, your school doesn't offer the AMC? :/ There's probably a school near your area which does, and there's quite a few university locations which offer the AMC to local high-school students, too. |

If people want to try the problems, I think the first part of problem 3 is pretty good to try if you´re not that familiar with any branch of math. It doesn't really use any knowledge that most people wouldn`t know.
Problems 1 and 2 are a lot easier than normal this year in my opinion, but they still require some knowledge that I'm not sure is common.
Also I should probably note the way it usually is supposed to be ordered is 3>2>1 in difficulty and 6>5>4. Last edit: 2012-07-11 07:31:25 |

| It would be great if they broadcasted this event as math is at the core of science. I would like to see some personal interviews and live commentary. |

haha I haven't seen olympiad problems in forever, they are sometimes more fun than school math (screw abstract algebra).
Number 2 seems pretty easy though...dividing everything by 1 and using a bit of calculus does the trick. Maybe I'll try number 3 later, it seems more interesting.

| Problem 2 can also be done just by using AM-GM, the bound is really weak. I'm not really sure what it's doing on the IMO. Problem 3 looks interesting, I still have no idea how to approach it. |

Oh wow I spent way to long failing #1. I feel like I'm getting rusty...
Yeah #2 is just AM-GM, but 3 looks interesting... the 2^k bound and the fact that you probably want weirdly overlapping sets indicates probably binary for part a... I haven't looked at part b. |

Man, every year I look at these and feel sad that I'm not smart and/or hardworking enough to solve these ._. Even AMC/AIME/USAMO problems are incredibly hard for me...
As always, though, interested in how each nation does at the top level. I wonder whether China will break its four-peat this year.Last edit: 2012-07-11 11:46:41 |

I think if you combine the letters and numbers you may be able to form a word that will give you a hint to the answer.
Seriously, major props to high school students who can get max points on these questions. |

bump: day 2 problems are up! lol #5 geometry. No combinatorics on day 2 --> probably bad for US team... we'll see.

heh, I did #1 quickly, but couldn't get #2 until I read your post. I even tried AM-GM, just in a totally stupid way lolLast edit: 2012-07-12 09:59:46 |

lol #4 was a really lame problem... boring and nothing but straightforward casework.
#3 is fun problem though, although I have no idea how to do the second part. |

Haha for #4, 2x^2y^2+2x^2z^2+2y^2z^2-x^4-y^4-z^4=(x+y+z)(x+y-z)(x-y+z)(-x+y+z)\
I eventually got 3a, I hope/think most of the US team should have gotten 1/2/3a. |
