Time for posting my 3rd map for MOTM!

Introduction/Inspiration: First of all, I want to apologize. I know some of you by now are tired of seeing beach maps. After seeing Ironman's Clearwater, the idea for a beach/temple pierced my brain, but I had my own idea to spin upon it. This map is actually quite old compared to my other 2 MOTM entries - Cerberus and Megafossil, and predates Doomsday, Khaydaria, VR, and possibly other older maps. For the beach aesthetic, I wanted to make as purely white and green as possible, whilst weaving in some protoss temple-y stuff, in keeping with Blizzard's aesthetic philosophy - to keep things bold, and ignoring realism where it is fun to do so.
Anyway, this map actually started out with a combination of 2 concepts - a 3rd base influenced by one of the 3rd's on Fractured, which has multiple pathways leading to it and around it. The second is a pair of large high grounds in the center, which provide for important points of control, without providing a monopoly on map control. I'm particularly pleased with the Xel'Naga tower placement - they offer an exact amount of control, offering vision of the center hills, but providing vision over additional pathways on its own side.

Is this going to be said about every beach map? Try to come up with something constructive to say, I'm trying to improve my maps, not endure copycat allegations. |

| i think it would be really cool if you covered the entire left half of the map in the mossy temple stone tileset that you use for the 10 o'clock base |

| I don't really like the layout of the natural, having too many possible entrance to the natural can be frustrating, just like I don't really favor the natural layout of Ohaha. Last edit: 2012-07-12 09:24:33 |

2 is too many? It is similar to Ohana in this regard, yes, but it's a far cry from Xel'Naga Caverns. |

| The first three expos are a lot like Ohana, yes. But I don't see how it's a copy of Bel'Shir beach. |

Actually, in almost all the games played so far, the base against the main is most often taken as the 3rd. So the base near the natural ends up being an option for a 4th base, which contributes to the post-3rd base dynamic of the map.
Keep the comments coming guys, just try to keep it constructive. |

If that was on purpose I see what you did there, if not, happy coincidence
I dunno, the middle is way different and thats what makes the map... |

I'm pretty sure neither Ohana nor Bel'Shir Beach had giant high-ground areas in the center; I swear half of people who look at maps just look at the tileset and the main-nat-third.
I really like the way the third is set up next to the main. Because of the multiple attack paths, high ground, and next-to-the-main-ness, it is reminiscent of Cloud Kingdom, but the staging areas for the aggressor are very different. there's one low ground area where you can dart into either the natural or the third, but to attack through the larger entrance to the third at the same time you have to split your army way back at the high ground.
I also like how you have a choice between a more easily defensible high-ground third and a more open low-ground third that covers a backdoor to your natural. Unfortunately, I think the large ramp leading into the low-ground base will stop anyone from taking it until it's their 4th.
Aesthetically it looks great, apart from being yet another beach map. The textures actually really remind me of a Blizzard map. You might want to think about redoing the edges of the temple area, though. Cutting off at the brick seams makes it look like the bricks were placed over the sand (or else some of the bricks near the edge disappeared somehow) while putting sand over the bricks makes it look like the temple is partly buried.
Also, don't do a Metropolis; put a depot on your ramp

| This isn't much like Bel'Shir Beach. Not sure I understand where the Ohana criticism is coming from either as it's one of the most well-received/liked maps in the last year (then again I love Ohana so maybe I'm partial). I like the optional thirds. |

Thanks. I think it's just because of the tileset honestly. It's really easy to judge maps by an overview, especially when someone wants to compare them, and that's where the fallacies come in. |
