I was really shocked when I heard of this news. Just wanted to share this news with you all and discuss the impact of such an event on the world.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/mali/9390601/Mali-how-the-West-cleared-the-way-for-al-Qaedas-African-march.html

...
Almost unnoticed by the outside world, a branch of al-Qaeda has seized a swathe of Africa covering more than 300,000 square miles. “Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” (AQIM) and its allies have taken over an area of the Sahara more than three times the size of Britain, complete with airports, military bases, arms dumps and training camps.
...
...
Equipment that was supplied to combat al-Qaeda has fallen into the hands of its fighters. Before the capture of northern Mali by Islamists in April, America had given military vehicles and satellite communications technology to the country’s army. In particular, the US supplied six counter-terrorism units with 87 Land Cruisers, along with satellite phones and navigation aids. AQIM fighters are now using these American donations, according to a serving soldier in the Malian army with decades of experience in the north.

Five of the six specialist military units abandoned their equipment and fled when AQIM and its allies advanced, he said. “The Islamists are the masters today,” he added. “They have all the equipment that we left in the field.”

In addition to these assets, AQIM has also inherited the stores abandoned by Mali’s army, including artillery, rocket launchers and large reserves of small arms and ammunition. AQIM controls the civilian airports of Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal, along with one of the region’s biggest military airbases at Tessalit, near the northern border with Algeria.

Medias have been covering that in France for months, since the Malian failed putsch some months ago, I'm actually quite surprised that it remained that unknown^^.
It is such a big deal, at the moment newspaper are making it frontpage because apparently some people are considering military actions.

Well, it's too bad that's still not really an army, of any sorts.. Since they have invaded another country like this they may be met with global resistance.

That's actually pretty bad, because now they have an operating base with all that equipment (free guns, cars, and airports? wtf) and are probably going to use that to dominate nearby areas where villagers have no way to defend themselves.

Yeah. The real problem over here is that most african countries are not really defended against the al-qaeda. It will be easier for them to 'take over' africa with their new-found treasures.

Sounds quite a bit as Afghanistan anno 1982, history repeats itself and now its Africas turn to bleed again. The current american military interest in Africa is intriguing, i wonder if its a countermeasure to Chinas ever increasing influence?

On the other hand, this is kinda old news, and the situation is quite a lot more complex than just "al-Qaeda took Mali". There are several groups fighting for control of the the northern part of Mali. I dont have any links and cant remember all the facts right now, but look into it, the ongoing process is indeed interesting!

One very sad aspect by the way, the islamist groups are destroying quite a lot of old cultural and religious monuments now, especially in the ancient city of Timbuktu

Just in case you guys are unaware recently some resources were found in Africa that America showed an interest in.

America immediately thought, how can we get these resources for ourselves? or rather "Free these people."

I'm actually not kidding, There has been a plan since about 4 years ago to get into Africa, governments work slowly but surely to get popular opinion into their favor more before doing big things. Al-qaeda was a retarded reason in the first place, they denied doing the 9/11 trade center bombing.

I will give you an educated guess. Al-qaeda went all around the world, Russia, China, all over Europe, America, Canada and etc...

No organization is stupid enough to put most of it's eggs in one basket, especially one that was support by the US Government like Al qaeda.

They will take more and more and kill more and more non-Islamists. Islamism is on the rise, look at the glorious Arab Spring for example. This is going to be ugly.

With Land Cruisers, satelite phones and navigation aid? Surely this is bad, but not a big deal. Al-Quaeda had lots o resources before, and the fact that they control some part of a huge desert doesnt change much. It can even be beneficial since now you know where to look for them lol.

Pretty sure this will be cleaned up pretty soon if anything comes from this. They "invaded" and African country and nothing has happend "yet" being the key word. Im sure there will be some push back by the Mali people with aid from NATO etcetc, they wont last to long there.

From reading the wikipedia articles it seems to be quite a reach to say that alqaeda was the driving force yet the organization that seized northern Mali.

Unless you assume that any islamist movement = al qaeda.

edit: I didn't want to say in any way that this is better or worse than if it "really" was alqaeda. However when another alqaeda-headline pops up I always have to think of
