My gf works at a bar, and has been telling me that almost all the Europeans she serves leave crappy tips (~5%). Do waiters/bartenders in Europe make a real salary from the bar, and tips are just bonuses to augment their pay?
For reference, most places in the US, you make about $2/hr, so tips are pretty much all of your pay. |

| Indeed. In the Eastern world servers make actual wages as people there don't tip. Also don't know where you got your 2$/hr but that really depends on where you live. I make 5 an hour + tips. It's still shit but I don't think i'd be serving if I only made 2 an hour. |

| Unlike in north america, waiters dont make most of thier money from tips. It is not at all uncommon for people not to tip in some circumstances. Having lived in belgium for 10 years and now in canada, im still not use to tipping (10%) for what i see sometimes as "bad service" or "no service" (at an all you can eat diner) |

How far east are we talking? I dont know about all EU countries but the ones ive been to all tip. IIRC its normally 5% at a bar and 10% at a restaurant. Alot of places in england actually add the tip onto the bill at a flat rate that you dont have any choice about playing, and some places when you put your card into the machine to pay, asks you do you want to pay a tip.
Unless we're talking about far far eastern countries, then everywhere tips as far as im aware
EDIT: Also, tell your GF she should be grateful. Waitresses/waiters/bartenders/ or whatever get paid, tips are just extra. Saying she gets crap tips is really unprofessional of her. IMO tips should only be given when you've recieved good service, not some of the shitty service you get from some places these daysLast edit: 2012-07-13 00:49:46 |

| I don't understand why servers aren't paid a decent wage, and why it's seen as the customers responibility to make up for it. I still tip, but seriously... |

| In Europe the unions are generally much more influential and therefore the responsibility to provide a salary for the employees is the employer's. Which is pretty reasonable since it's them who hire the servers..... |

| Don't tip except in restaurants, and only if the service was actually good. Might tip take away delivery if it was free delivery and it got to the house quickly. |

No she shouldn't. Waiters get paid about 1/3-1/4 of minimum wage in America. If they don't get tips they may as well not have a job. The point of the thread is that its different in Europe and America, you can't apply your standard here to a different system.

It's to add an incentive for giving superior service, and it really doesn't cost you anything extra since food prices would go up if you weren't expect to tip. Really it just gets you better service for the same price.Last edit: 2012-07-13 00:56:32 |

yeah in Euroland bartenders get better wages, you certainly won't get rich, but payment is much better than 2 bucks an hour.
Tips in Euroland are usually around the 5-10% mark. As i live in a no service country, sometimes my only tip for the bartender/waiter is to look for another job |

| In europe, we just pay waiters and waitresses an actual wage. You know, the same way it works in every other field. Which makes sense because I would think relying on tips as a means of income is quite stress-inducing. |

I've been to a lot of places in Sweden where tipping isn't even possible if you're paying with a card. Leaving somewhere between 5-10% in a restaurant is pretty standard but most people don't tip at all in bars.
Definitely a huge cultural difference. |

Waiters get paid more, unlike in America where most of a servers money comes from their tips. The low tips are probably due to the Europeans not realizing how the tip system works in America.
Its funny cos when I worked in a restaurant the waiters would always complain that the Asian customers never tipped, which is because tips aren't expected in a lot of Asian countries, but then they loved the American customers because they would waaay over-tip compared to what would be considered customary, even for excellent service.
edit: Oh in bars. Well I don't know if you mean a bar where you're served drinks or where you stand up to order drinks, but I would never tip in a bar where you just go up and order your own drinks, I haven't even heard of that before except maybe from guys who wanna try and look baller.Last edit: 2012-07-13 00:58:37 |

She makes $2.15 an hour. Tips are the only way she gets paid. |

This. And most of people still do leave tips which I really see no point in since transferring a bottle few meters from point A to point B doesn't really warrant that amount of gratitude. In Croatia, especially now in the summer, a lot of people take summer jobs as waiters, earning basic salary (almost a national average) + tips which can then reach 3-4 times national average salary in more popular places. Americanisation -.- |

Let's not go there... though I also think that it's good to have an alright salary as a waiter and on top you will get tipped if you did well.
