It looks like America is doing the exact opposite of what Iran wants them to do -_-; Anybody know what impact of this will bring on Iran US diplomacy, oil prices, etc?
The Pentagon is sending the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis to sea four months ahead of schedule to ensure that there are at least two carriers in the Middle East.
The U.S. Navy has had two carriers operating in the Middle East for quite some time. It usually rotates one of the two carriers into the Persian Gulf for several weeks at a time while the other operates in the Arabian Sea, providing air support for the war in Afghanistan.
Today, Pentagon spokesman George Little confirmed that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has agreed to a recent request from U.S. Central Command to maintain a two-carrier presence in the Middle East.
In September the U.S. was going to go down to one carrier, as the USS Enterprise would not be replaced after it left the region. To prevent that from happening the Stennis has had its deployment orders changed from the Pacific to the Middle East.
Little says the Stennis is being sent so that there is no gap in between two carrier assignments to the region. Also being sent on the deployment will be the cruiser USS Mobile Bay.
Little said the need to send the carrier early was "not a decision based solely on the challenges posed by Iran."
On Sunday, the USS Eisenhower replaced the other carrier in the region, the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is headed to Norfolk for maintenance work.
In order to make the Stennis/Enterprise swap possible, the Enterprise's deployment will be extended for what officials say will be "a few days." It also means the crew of the Stennis will be out to sea for longer than they had expected. Originally slated for a four-month Pacific Ocean deployment, the Stennis will now leave four months early to serve a seven month deployment that will last through April 2013.

| So that's 4 Carriers close to Iran now. Inb4 war. If that ain't the case, I sure as hell hope that the US is trying to scare the living shit out of Iran, otherwise I don't see the point. Last edit: 2012-07-18 07:25:03 |

Oil prices will rise only if a war starts and even then not by too much as they embargoed by the west right now. My guess is they know that Iran is buying time and not really acting serious so they went to show them that they mean what they say. |

| What I can't understand is why everyone is allowed to know where US military warships are located. We seem to hear about the whereabouts of the military arsenal a lot more often than I expected. Warfare didn't used to be like this. |

Don't worry quite yet.
Ben Bernanke, The Fed, Obama, and the rest of the banksters have to fuck up our economy a bit more before full-blown military action becomes a necessary distraction from the problems at home. That time isn't now, but looming in the near distance. |

| Just for general knowledge - 2 aircraft carriers can win a war with 90% of the world when fought 1v1. Outright. |

I assume every major international power has the ability (with sattelites, radar technology and the speed of communications through social media) to easily work out where giant battleships are at any point in time, there isn't really any point in hiding it. Also, a move like this is mainly symbolic. This is pretty much just america giving iran the finger, and what point is there in giving someone the finger if you do it in a way they, and everyone around you who you are trying to impress by doing this, can't see it. |

Vast majority has been decommissioned. There's about 12 active Carriers in the US arsenal and 1 under construction/planned. |

Aircraft carriers are the most effective way to control the seas.
And I would not be surprised if this is just because the Enterprise is due to be retired pretty soon. |

afaik europe no longer buy iranian oil, not sure about NA but they probably haven't in a long time i think UK mostly buy BRENT, which isn't influenced by iran at all
oil price will raise, but just because of media telling us it might go up
also, there won't be a war (iran or syria) right now, obama needs to be reelected, and the next US president (whoever it is) can't start a war as soon as elected
next on the list is syria, but civilians will probably keep dying by a hundred a day for at least a year before there's any intervention and then maybe iran, but there will be so much repercussions with russia :/ |

I'd say America doing exactly the opposite of what Iran wants is a pretty good guide on foreign policy decisions in the Middle East =).
All joking aside, this story looks rather trivial. United States has been in the habit of having 2 carriers in the area (Arabian Sea & Persian Gulf with rotation) and one avail to assist with missions in the current war being waged in the region. They are making decisions to keep 2 carriers in the region as has been the case.
They're still under multiple embargoes so I don't expect too much of an accentuated flux in oil prices because of this. |
