Hey guys,
I'm getting myself a laptop for college. Here is the one i think i am getting.
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np6165-clevo-w150er-p-4344.html?wconfigure=yes
With a few upgrades. For $1196, I get
- 15.6" Matte Screen
- 3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3610QM (2.3GHz - 3.3GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP)
- IC Diamond Thermal Compound (for better cooling)
- nVidia GT 650M 1024MB
- 256gb Crucial M4 Series Solid State Drive
- 8gb RAM
Does this sound good to you all? What upgrades would you get / drop.
Also, is the GT 650M good enough for most games, and should i upgrade to 16GB RAM for an extra $150.
Thanks
EDIT: can anyone attest to the general quality/ build quality of Sager? Never heard much about them.

| the extra ram isn't needed, the 650 should be able to run games @ 1080 or lower on low/medium settings fine. Last edit: 2012-07-18 04:01:42 |

ok cool thanks. its a no on the extra RAM. Would you agree with all the other upgrades? Its 75$ to get the Matte screen instead of Glossy, its 35$ for the cooling compound application, and 250$ for the 256GB SSD to replace the 500GB regular hard drive.
And it is 70$ to upgrade from 3rg gen i5 to 3rd gen i7. |

I would upgrade the cpu at that price, but nothing more (and that gpu sucks)

Apparently the GPU can run most games at High around 30 FPS. And I want the Matte screen so that glare is reduced, and i think an SSD might be a better investment, especially because i don't need 500gb of space on my laptop. I'll be bringing external drives. Thanks for the input. Also i'm from America |

the only good thing those laptops have going for them is the GPUS, the CPUS are last gen, and they all have mech hdd's. OP sacrificed GPU for SSD and that GPU can run most games at low/medium settings above 60fps which for any game is fine. Performance gain with ssd over lower graphics is ok im my book. |

The three you just linked are all worse in specs and in price value. A year and a half ago I bought a laptop nearly identical to the first one you linked for $1100.
And the one in the OP costs as much as the last one, and is quite a bit better.
Did you even read the specs or just say "A laptop from a name brand? Must be awful"? |

Huh, you do realise the difference between last gen and this one is... very small? for much cheaper it's almost as good cpu level, with a MUCH better gpu
and he can still buy an SSD and add it in?
seriously, don't talk to say such shit |

and when did almost ever cut it? 10-15% difference in performance 256gb ssds are $200-250Last edit: 2012-07-18 05:38:00 |

Thanks for all the input
Rachnar- All the laptops you linked have arguably similar graphics performance to the 650M. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html. Especially for Starcraft II, the performance difference at medium, and arguably high, is relevant but minimal. I have to agree that at similar prices (especially if i forgo the screen and cooling upgrades) , the Sager is the winner. It has SSD, 3rd Gen, and a comparable GPU. Less RAM, but everything is a trade-off.
Thanks again for the help/ discussion, it's much appreciated.

I'm not arguing with you, OP's choice to listen to my advice, or not, if he doesn't, his problem, not mine It won't change the fact i know what i found is more worth the money |

op I bought a very similar pc from sager except I got an IB core i5 and no ssd. the gt650M is pretty good, running sc2 on low around 160-200 fps and can even handle ultra fairly well although I didn't play with it on ultra for very long so I dunno how late game would handle. you might experience lower fps since your cpu is probably clocked lower than mine with 4 cores and sc2 only uses 2 cores, but as long as you aren't expecting 60 fps on you should be happy. ultimately I'm very happy with my purchase, although nvidia optimus has given me a lot of headaches. hope you enjoy the pc.
edit: was just looking at specs but now I realize you got exact same model as me except with similar upgrades. imo np6165 is an excellent computer, great build quality and matte screen is awesome. only issue so far was with optimus, also my fps drops to 30-60 even on low when i use windowed full screen, but I think that's less of an issue with the laptop and more me being use to playing on my more powerful desktop.Last edit: 2012-07-18 06:37:13 |

Matte screen only if you're going to be outside a lot or in a changing environment. if you're going to sit in a room with ability to change the lighting go for glossy.
It looks fine for the price, I wouldn't go for the 16 GB RAM, and unless your college requires you to do CPU intensive tasks i would stick with the i5 or the i7-3610QM... it is enough power for gaming at least.
I have heard the Clevo W110ER does run a little hot (expected for that much power in an 11") and build quality is questionable.

You're the one talking shit. Benchmarks show the i7-3610QM almost matches the i7-2920XM. That's not a "small" difference. Also, he's using this for college and MSI laptops are heavy as hell. The 570M is only slightly more powerful than the GT 650M, not "MUCH" better. SC2 doesn't even need that good of a GPU either. As a college student he should be better suited to the 11" laptop. matte screen is worth it 100%. as far as optimus, it never worked automatically for me like advertised, and at first it wasn't working at all. I reinstalled windows and forced it to manually run the dGPU to finally get it working. some people have no problems, but in my experience troubleshooting it a lot do, but it never really goes beyond having to manually force it to run by right clicking on the shortcut. |

Why do you say that it is not a small difference right after saying that the 3rd gen i7 almost matches the 2nd gen i7. Confused. |

| It's not a small difference because ivy bridge consumes less power, etc. and has advantages over the last generation sandy bridge, so the performance is still equal while other things are better for 3rd gen. |
