| I will update this post shortly with full info (or as it comes out) but given the huge news today that Nadal has withdrawn from the men's singles tournament because of knee issues I thought having a thread up for discussion would be good :O Last edit: 2012-07-20 06:54:05 |

| With Nadal out, I really hope if Federer can win one more title in his career that it will be the Olympic gold medal for the men`s singles. |

Definitely gonna be between Djokovic and Federer to take the title. If Djokovic doesn't choke like he has in the semifinals in Wimbledon or the finals of Roland Garros, he'll take it. Otherwise Federer's definitely gonna ride his grass court prowess to the gold medal.
Third place? Now that's gonna be hard. Wimbledon was nothing but upsets every round, so the draws will be hectic. Murray could be a contender for it though considering how well he did during Wimbledon.
Also, Federer and Wawrinka are going to take the doubles championship, easy. |

| Aww the surface is going to be grass. I was hoping to see hard court for the olympics and then I realize it'll be held at wimbledon again (great month to be there I guess). |

Mardy Fish, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Marcel Granollers, Julien Benneteau, Florian Mayer and Kevin Anderson are the only other top-30-ish players that won't be there, either due to their country being over quota (max 4 players per country per draw), the player being ineligible (you need to make yourself available for Davis Cup to compete at the Olympics), injury or, in Fish's case, focussing on the US Open. |

It could happen.
No one knows what mental state Murray will be in after the crushing disappointment of the Wimbledon final, he's certainly been prone to serious slumps after the previous times he got crushed in a slam final.
Fed I think cares quite a bit about adding the Olympic singles gold to his resumé so will probably be focused on it, but I'd not be surprised if there's a bit of a hangover after the highs of winning Wimbledon and finally taking away Sampras record of weeks at number one (he was stuck 2 weeks short of passing him since he lost the #1 ranking in the first half of 2010)Last edit: 2012-07-20 16:55:11 |

Switzerland would beat USA in doubles hands down. |

Really? I'd still give the Bryan brothers the edge.
Federer+Wawrinka isn't exactly a regular doubles team. Last time they met the Bryans they lost in four sets..... and before that they lost to a team of Guccione and Hewitt against Australia -_-
But wow, Nadal withdrew?! O_O Definitely opens it up a bit. Really rooting for Roger~!! Hope he can get that golden slam.
Also, Djokovic did not choke until the final set a bit, but there was also signature overwhelming Federer pressure at that point. I'm the first to admit I'm a huge Federer fan, but if you watched match, they both played incredibly. Djokovic himself gave Fed the credit for beating him. Obviously when you lose you rarely feel that you played 100%, especially if you're world no. 1, but even with that kind of mentality, he said that Roger was just better than him that day. Did you see the stats? Federer was godmode. 8 UEs and over triple that in winners.Last edit: 2012-07-20 17:36:36 |

I think doubles players are pretty overrated nowadays, the playing field just isn't that great.
Give pretty much any combination of top 30 players a bit of practice for an event rather than hopping off the bus for a DC tie and deciding who's going to play with no warm up together and they'll go toe to toe with most dedicated doubles pairings.
The last 2 olympics were won by singles pairings, Fed and Wawrinka beat both the Bryan brothers and Paes/Bhupati when they did it in 08 and those are some of the most decorated players of the last decade in doubles. Meanwhile Massu and Gonzalez won in 04 and neither even play a type of tennis that's particularly good for doubles (again there were some good doubles specialists in the draw).
I'd be pretty surprised if the doubles doesn't get won by a traditional singles pairing again this year.

I guess so. I generally have no confidence in my predictions or analyses anyway so I'm just looking forward to watching some good tennis ^^
It would definitely be so, so sweet if Federer could get the gold. Also it would secure his No. 1 ranking for the time being. If Djokovic gets farther and they both go deep, he could quite easily pass Roger for now because he's only behind 75 points anyway lol. Roger should probably(?) have a pretty easy semi opponent unless they decide to pair it 1-4 2-5 or something along those lines. I know that they have done both 1-3/2-4 and 1-4/2-3. Well I mean 5 would essentially be seeded fourth; I was using the rankings whoops. So pairing 1-3/2-4 could be significantly worse for Federer because he matches up against Ferrer a ton better than he does Murray (and Murray is generally more dangerous), 3 being Murray and 4 being Ferrer.
And there's always the chance that a player will go berserk and get in the zone of course. >< I agree with your comments regarding Murray and Federer. We'll see what happens :oLast edit: 2012-07-20 19:06:30 |

Sorry why isn't Nadal playing? I haven't been following tennis for half a year though.
Either way, go Andy! |

holy crud nadal out
and with the ol' knee again no less, at least he could try being original
i think federer is the clear favorite, but murray looked pretty great during the finals. djokovic also seems to get very inspired when playing for his country, leading serbia to davis cup couple of years ago (then subsequently dominating the next tennis year |

| does anyone know if they are using center court? I thought I heard years ago that playing on center court was reserved for The Championships Wimbledon, but if anything would be an exception to that it would be the Olympics |
