Back when I played starcraft on bnet (not brood war) there was this fairly popular UMS map I used to like a lot. It was sort of like desert strike. There were two teams (I remember the forces were something like "North Base" and "South Base") who each had some building the other team was trying to destroy.
The map looked sort of like this ==spawner== ==thing you want to kill== ==long path== ==long path== ==long path== ==thing you want to kill== ==spawner==
To the right of this was the place where you would buy units. There were various beacons you would move a civ to. You would spawn a continuous stream of the unit corresponding with that beacon (there were lots of different units). When you got a certain number of kills, you would get DTs you could use on other beacons to buy specials (I remember 3 of them. One was a mass of terran units, another a mass of zerg units, and one was a mass of protoss units. I'm sure there were more than just this though.)
At most, 6 people could play the map (3 on each team).
Does anyone remember the name of this map, or know where I can download it from?
(If you need additional details about the map, just ask. I might remember more about it) Space tileset, btw.
i think its a version of overmind defence (but could be wrong because u have to mostly build the units and not use a civ) or possibly a very old version of battlecraft which consisted of only top/bottom?
just noticed u said on starcraft and not broodwar... so i go more with the second guess.
I'm looking up all the maps you suggest, by the way. Overmind defence looked kind of similar (it's available on space and jungle tilesets), but I'm absolutely certain that you didn't build things, you just spawned them.
I'm also certain it's not tug of war.
I did, however, just remember an additional detail (though it probably won't help). One of the specials you could buy was something which placed bunkers (filled with units) and missile turrets along the entire battlefield, at certain intervals.

Similar in some ways I guess, but it's not that. I'm completely sure about the space tileset. The map was setup (aesthetically) similar to Overmind Def. Thin lane on the left side. Everything else on the right.
(I just remembered) Each team had a separate area to buy units+specials, though the units and specials were the same for each team. I BELIEVE that each team had two octagons (the shape might be wrong). The north team's were at the top, and the south team's were at the bottom.
I'm also sure that there was a building you were trying to destroy (like in Desert Strike), but only one, at the very top and very bottom of the lane.
