I have just been bothered lately by people saying stuff like;
"5 year old gm laddering" "90 year old silver league"
You obviously are trying to draw attention to yourself due to your age. I know you want to set yourself apart and attract people but we don't see people going around saying
"GM toss who has climbed 2 mountains laddering"
I just think that people are using it to much in promotion. Now I see this and I don't want to watch this stream anymore because of the way in which you are presenting yourselves. Just earlier today someone said something like
"15 year old high masters zerg offering coaching"
Why does it matter that you are 15? Is it better coaching? no so why put it other than to promote yourself. I feel like this should stop because its getting out of hand. What do you guys think on this? Am I being to hyper critical or what?
edit:
I see what you all are saying. I guess the thing that gets me is just the sheer amount of people doing it now. It seems like its lost the appeal that it once had and now everyone is trying to jump on the bandwagon because they know people will look at it. (and thats the point) I guess its just me then; just got to live with it. seems more like a peeve to me than anything else.Last edit: 2012-07-24 12:43:25 |

| I think you're reading too much into nothing. When people introduce themselves they say their age often... |

Nothing wrong with promoting yourself through age. BTW, this topic is bad. |

I think you didn't really explain why it bothers you so much. It doesn't bother me at all, I really don't care either way.
However the 14 year old GM terran on NA actually drew my attention just because he was 14, and he turned out to have a great stream. Never would've found it if he didn't advertise his age. |

First of all I agree with you. Secondly, I dont think this is worthy of being a thread. If you can find 5 or more instances of this, then maybe it is an issue. However, until then, it does not need to be addressed.
Also to explain the OP's frustrations, I'm guessing he feels that people should not be special just because they are 14 and are in Grandmaster league. The point being that everyone is capable of being grandmaster and thus age is not relevant. Last edit: 2012-07-24 12:41:27 |

This. And why would they listen to you? It's their choice. |

I see it in no way a bad thing...you have to attract people somehow.
As for it getting out of hand, it has to actually do some sort of damage, or be threatening for us to put an end to it. Just because you feel like people shouldn't advertise with their age will not make it stop. |

| I guess its that so many people are doing it that it has lost the luster to it to me I guess. It was cool at first and then it just it now like an average thing. I see it all the time. |

| Why does it matter to you whether they say their age or not? If people are attracted to the stream because of that information, good for them. If they are not interested, they will simply not tune in. I just don't understand why you are so upset by this... |

I for one, get attracted into those stream. Stream chat much more friendly, it adds a bit more into than just another 'x league player' if you know what I mean. If I want to watch high level, I got all those feature streams on TL anyway |

because if they dont jsut another of the 1000000000000000 trillion people streaming
people want to get known, they want people to see them they want to get views they want to get money from streaming they want attention so they sell themselves in the best possible way so instead of jsut being another person streaming theres a reason for someone to check them out |

| I have no problems with people including information that is not relevant to the game or their skill level. I see no way to differentiate how other information like gender/sex/race/education level/occupation is less/more relevant compared to age. So I am interested to know why age is specifically bothersome to you. Also additional information can be helpful for viewer to differentiate between streams when selecting what to watch. For example Gordon Hayword's stream was partially popularized by his occupation. I wouldn't mind knowing interesting tidbits that might make a person seem more interesting. The truth is that there is an abundance of non-featured streams so why not give information that might make my decision easier? Last edit: 2012-07-24 12:52:36 |

I understand this, but I think it has been overdone recently and has lost the glamour that it once had. Like when pros used to say they were innovative. It was awesome for the first couple of months and then everyone started to say it, but they just played normally, so it lost the appeal that it once had. This is all I'm saying. |

| People want to get known and want to promote themselves - there isn't anything wrong with this assuming they are being honest. I'm much more interested in watching an unknown low gm 14 year old than a 26 year old because younger players have more time/potential to develop into greater players. It's not rocket science, and it shouldn't bother you |

The coaching example that you gave actually seems like a deterrent to me. Who would want to be taught how to play by a kid? |
