yeah, other than the dating thing for money, there are tons of odd jobs that you can undertake to get fast cash. Just don't get caught up in them for too long, because a lot of them may seem harmless, but they are kind of addicting, and you'll lose yourself doing them. I guess an example of a not so bad odd job would be the model who's not some perverted freak to just pose nude for your campuses art class. I don't think the teacher cares who they get, as far as their models go. I know they paid $15 an hour when I was in school. I really hope I don't offend you if you're religious, but it's just a modelling job, and it's completely different from being in a strip club.
Since you do rugby, I'm assuming also that you're athletic. There are pilates and yoga workshops online, in which you can pass them in about 5 hours of studying to become a certified pilates/yoga instructor too. |

Fellow rugger! Where do you play at?
closest I've come to doing this was shopping for my house of five on 200 or 400 a month which comes out to around 3$ a day. At school I typically spend about 50$/week and thats not too hardLast edit: 2012-08-02 20:39:12 |

I was living off a very tight budget for food when I first moved out of my parent's. I was spending around $100/month on food which is slightly over $3/day.
The secret is to only buy the protein thats on sale for the week and marked down fruits and vegetables.
I always buy quarter chicken legs (leg + thigh + back) for $1/lb which works out to be about $0.75 each. One of these quarter legs is enough to fill me for a meal.
Another option is ground pork for about $1.25/lbs. I usually make Bolognese sauce with it enough for the entire week so I can have quick pasta+ sauce whenever I wanted.
As for the marked down fruits and veggies. I could buy huge bags of oranges for like a $1 in Chinatown (man I remember sometimes a bag had like 10+ huge oranges). You could also get like 4-5lbs of red potato for a $1, 10lbs of onions for $2, 5lbs of carrots for $1, 2 celery stalks for $1 etc...
I like bagels and whenever they're on sale you could get 6 bagels for $1.
$3/day is quite easy to do. I've tried $1.5/day and that was impossible. |

I'm very interested in hearing how this goes. Closest I came was probably $6 a day but I'm guessing. Raisin bran and milk for breakfast, pb+j for lunch, spaghetti or canned soup for dinner. Nothing to support an athlete though but was doable. I probably mooched a bunch from nice people too though |

| Have ya'll tried going to the local farmers/fisheries/poultry market? A lot of the time it's cheaper than the grocery store. |

I have done this (not by choice) when my girlfriend and I first lived together and were both in school/out of work we were spending about 40 dollars a week on food between the two of us.
As long as you are willing to cook your own meals and give up luxuries it isn't too much of an issue.
Vegetable stir fries and large pasta dishes were pretty much the answer.
If there is a wholesale club of some kind near you that is eaither open to the public or you know someone with a membership use it and buy everything in large quantities, that costs more up front but will be better in the long run. |

I've done this on 2 dollars a day for a class, it wasn't a pleasant experience and I didn't eat quite healthily, but what I'd suggest is: Get some really cheap high calorie foods. Rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes are pretty cheap and filling. Fresh veggies are generally pretty expensive, but frozen stuff works in a pinch. You could also just look for seasonal veggies. Fruits are pretty identical to veggies, though with a tight budget they become a luxury. For protein, eggs are dirt cheap. I also had hot dogs which were also pretty cheap, but looking for whatever's cheap (whole chicken) or on sale is really good. Multivitamins are cheap, like 5 cents each or something. When you're on a budget, nothing's set in stone. When shopping having an idea of what you want is good, but always be looking for sales. |

I live in China as an almost vegetarian (Shanghai is more expensive than the average but still) and eating for 3$ a day seems extremely hard. I wish you good luck, but don't sacrifice your health for a challenge. |

On July 27 2012 19:46 red_ wrote: Not-lean ground beef chuck is probably the most 'economical' food choice I can think of. If you 'strain' the beef in scalding hot water before cooking you will reduce some of the saturated fat content, although that has the obvious side effect of reducing calories. I know saturated fat isn't the devil, but you definitely don't want it being your primary calorie source either, and this method essentially gives you 'lean ground beef' for a much reduced price.
Eggs are another quite cheap, calorie dense, protein+fat source.
Just out of curiousity, why can't saturated fat be the primary calorie source? If anything I'd worry a lot more about empty calories found in white rice, pasta and other highly processed foods.
To add to the discussion at hand, the problem with having a really low food budget is that you're consequently forced to pick the lowest quality alternatives. For example, there's a huge nutritional difference between grass fed beef compared to the regular beef that's highly affordable in the supermarkets. Eggs also show significant differences in nutrition depending on the hen's living conditions. Same with vegetables of course, where tomatoes injected with a plethora of toxics and being sent from the other side of the world are much cheaper compared to organic and locally produced alternatives. |

This isn't hard. It just requires discipline.
My food budget is no more than $20/week. I'm not doing it as some sort of challenge, I'm doing it to pay off debt and cessate my desires.
Peanut butter, legumes, steel-cut oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, potatoes, and diligent sales from Smart and Final, Fresh and Easy, Sprouts and Stater Bros.
You don't need to sacrifice with terrible low-qualiy produce/fruit/fast food. Buy what's in season. I could do this no sweat buying food from Cardenas, but that is the worst-quality shopping market in the world and I treat my body with kindness.
I don't eat meat, eggs or cheese so that's not a problem.
And I work out a lot too so my metabolism is pretty fast.Last edit: 2012-08-24 23:39:28 |

| I definitely should educate myself more about eating cheaply, I spend ~ 20$ a week, and my meals consist of chicken/eggs/rice/noodles/bananas/frozen veggies/milk/juice/water. |
