Introduction
According to a certain website, France is the second most represented country on TL with 13 % of its visitors coming from the our land. We are the invisible minority, we suffer under the oppression of english speakers. I can't change that but I can make you a nice thread where we will be able to follow both our national athletes while mocking everyone else in a true french spirit.
In this thread, I will try to present the different competitions our frenchies are entering with their different chances of medals, I'll talk about how they crushed everyone else's sorry ass when they win or how they lost in dignity defending the true honor of France. Any help is welcome because I am not ultra familiar with every sport and if you happen to know a lot about it, share the knowledge bomb. You are most welcome to comment with me.
Before the childish banter happens, let's put down some basic rules :
- All site-wide rules apply. Be kind of words, and nice to your fellow TLer. I am not responsible if you get banned.
- This is a nation-specific thread, I asked if I could do one to members of the staff. So don't come here and try to speak about how great the USA are, in the same way I don't come to your 4th of July with a french flag singing La Marseillaise. It's the same for every other country.
- I will smack talk, mock, taunt, use biased arguments and show overall an huge favoritism towards France. If you can't deal with that, save your time and don't post your opinion because no one cares.

+ Show Spoiler +ArcheryBadmintonBasketballBoxing MenFencingJudoFootball WomenRowing Archery+ Show Spoiler +Archery is actually very similar to StarCraft II in the sense that Koreans destroy everyone and only France can hold its ground. The french Men's team is pretty much the best all-around team in Europe right now, Unfortunately for us, it's not really where the big names are. France qualified one of the best team in the world (Top 4) in its Men's Team : Gaël Prévost (left) is a extremely talented 18 year old who has recently entered the world top 8, in a technical sport where experience can be a huge factor he is an oddball and can attempt to enter a top 8, a medal would be harder due to his inexperience but a breakout wouldn't be that much surprising; Romain Girouille (center) is a more experienced archer who is a regular Top 20 in the World Cup, he will be the angular stone of the team and its leader but aside from a spectacular performance shouldn't get the 3rd round; finally Thomas Faucheron (right) is a team player, he is considerably weaker than the rest of the team but his consistency in the Team Event makes him a strong ally for a possible team silver medal. I say silver medal because the Korean team is actually that much better than the rest of the top 4 (China, France, USA) If they can avoid Korea in their patch, they could get a well deserved medal. Bérengère Schuh is not as high profile as the men but she has done some nice World Cup performance in the past placing as high as second place. She could do a good run and get a 3rd Place but I don't expect her to take on the korean team all alone. She won the Bronze Medal in Beijing with the Women's Team but they weren't able to meet the quota this time. Badminton+ Show Spoiler +Badminton isn't really France strong point. Even though a man trained in France qualified these Olympics, Brice Leverdez is not really a top player in Badminton. He fall in the group of the weakest seeded player but will probably be unable to advance past the group stage. Hongyan Pi is a China-born player who has some correct results throug her career. Arrived 15 years ago in France, she has been naturalized after that and placed 5th in Beijing. She struggled through a knee injury during the whole season and was barely qualified as a seeded player in the Olympics. Considering her state, a medal is unlikely but she is capable of reaching a top 16. Basketball+ Show Spoiler +In a discipline naturally dominated by the USA, France isn't too shabby. The Men's team has several NBA players with a Team Highlighted by Tony Parker. Their performance will be tightly bound to the one of Parker. We can suppose that the absence of Joakim Noah could prove dreadful. However I expect them to enter a Top 8 at least and possibly a Top 4. A medal would depends of the brackets. Their first match is the most difficult against the USA and they will probably lose. The most important matchs will be against Argentina and Lituania.Key members : Tony Parker, Nicolas Batum, Boris Diaw and Ronny Turiaf. The Women's Team is on fire, they recently beat Australia the vice-champion in the last Olympics as well as Brazil and China. They are probably inside the Top 8 right now and even though the USA is above everyone else, they could aim for the same results as the men. As their group is composed of Australia and Brazil a first place isn't too arrogant to aim for. Boxing Men+ Show Spoiler +The french boxing team can't compare to Cuba but it has 2 chances of medals. First Alexis Vastine (left) in -60kg who were robbed in the last Olympics by a penalty some seconds before the end of the match is coming here to place top 4 at least. Anything but a medal here would still be a huge letdown for him. But that's not the case for Jérémy Beccu (right) in-49kg is an up and coming boxer who could make a big impact this time, while still very young he has the potential to go to a Ro4 as well. The rest of the team is composed of an up and comer in Tony Yoka (left) in +91kg, a former Ro16 Nordine Oubaali (center) in -52kg coming here for a medal but with little chances and a newcomer who is older guy Rachid Azzedine (right) -69kg. Fencing+ Show Spoiler +Fencing was for a long time the main Olympic sport for France. Together with Italy, we are the main nations of Fencing.Since the last Olympics we had troubles regenerating our teams. Epée is traditionally the main weapon for France while Foil is clearly a Italian specialty, but today the strongest french teams are in Foil. The Men's Team fall to China in 2011 in an epic match and if they fence as a team, they have the heart and willpower to go very far. In individual Victor Sintès (left) and Erwann Le Péchoux (center left) are Top 12 and can pretend to a Ro8 and even Ro4. Going further will depends on draws and performance. Their 3rd man Enzo lefort is 27th. The Women's team is stronger in individual with Corinne Maitrejean (center right) 6th and Astrid Guyart (right) 7th and those two have a high chance of medal. Their team is considerably weaker than the Italians or the Koreans and they can aim for a 3rd place. In Sabre, France is represented by Bolade Apithy (top left) who can hope for a medal even though he isn't on top of his form as shown by his World Cup placing at 10th and by Léonore Perrus (top right) who will struggle to go further than Top16. It's the same story in Epée where Laura Flessel-Colovic (bottom left) would need a herculean effort to get a medal but after being one of the most successful ever, she has nothing to lose. Gauthier Grumier (bottom right) is a awesome Epeist but I don't see him being in top form. One of the most talented french epeist right now, he is coming to win as he did in the last World Championship. I expect him to be at least in Top 4. Football Women+ Show Spoiler +While the french Men's team is shaming France competition after competition, the Women's Team is actually quite decent. In the wake of Lyon's win of the Women Champion's League, they are now among the best in the world. Undefeated for 16 consecutive games, they come into the Olympics as a strong contender to the gold medal as they is no clear leader in this category. They lack the experience to go very far but I think they can decently pretend to a medal. Key members : Gaëtane Thiney, Élodie Thomis, Camille Abily and Sonia Bompastor. Judo+ Show Spoiler +In the realm of Judo, there are Gods like Naoya Ogawa. Teddy Riner (top left) in +100kg is just too strong. He should have won the last Olympics but fell against a nasty opponent. He his probably going to be the most titled Judoka in the whole history of the sport. Veni, Vedi, Vici is his motto. Gévrise Emane (center) in -63kg and Lucie Décosse -70kg are favorites too but aren't on the same level as Teddy Riner. I still expect them to have at least a silver medal. In other Men categories Sofiane Milous in -60kg, David Larose in -66 kg, Ugo Legrand in -73 kg, Alain Schmitt in -81kg, Romain Buffet in -90kg and Thierry Fabre in -100 kg are all placing among the top 22 of their categories but aside from a spectacular performance are unlikely to get a medals. In the Women categories on the other hand, Automne Pavia in -57kg and Audrey Tcheuméo in -78kg are strong outsiders who could make a big impact and will big names in the next Olympics. Laëtitia Payet in -48kg, Anne-Sophie Mondière in -78kg and Priscilla Gneto in -52kg are also among the Top 22 but will be hard-pressed to place high. Rowing+ Show Spoiler +One of the amateur sports of the Olympics, it's not a french specialty but we usually have enough talent to field good boat in Fours and Double. This year there isn't any female boat qualified and we have decent chances of medals in the men.The best chances of medals come from 2 doubles. First the Lightweight Double Scull with Jérémie Azou (top left) and Stany Delaire (top right) who are among the best in their category right now. In the World Cup their worst performance was 2nd. We can expect at least a top 3 from them even though it seems like an very inexperienced though. Experience is one of the main point of the other Double Scull with Cédric Berrest (bottom left) and Julien Bahain (bottom right) who were 3rd in the last Olympics and World Championship. I am not sure they still have the power to do the same once again but counting them out would be a terrible mistake to make. Other boats are the Men's Pair with Germain Chardin and Dorian Mortelette who could place in the Top 6, the Men's Lightweight Four with Thomas Baroukh, Fabrice Moreau, Nicolas Moutton and leaded by the experienced Franck Solforosi and finally the Men's Quadruple Scull with Matthieu Androdias, Benjamin Chabanet, Adrien Hardy, Pierre-Jean Peltier. Days -2 to 0
Archery Men - Ranking Round Archery Women - Ranking Round Football Women - First Round A
Archery Men - Ranking Round
The ranking round was a successful one for the Men. They were able to placed 2nd in the Team Event which should allow them to avoid Korea until the finals. They should pass every round until they face the USA in the semi-finals. Gaël Prévost confirmed his top 8 by placing 6th while Romain Girouille comes off with a strong showing at 9th, as expected Thomas Faucheron is behind at 27th but he is the 3rd archer among the 3rd men of the major teams. They should all pass the first round easily against much weaker opponents. Korea crushed both competition taking 1st in team and the first 3 places in invididuals. The road to a medal will be tough in that regards.
Results : Team, Individual.
Archery Women - Ranking Round
Bérengère Schuh had a tough day in Lord's Cricket Ground as she placed 37th, 20 points behind the Korean leader. Her road will be tough as she starts the competition against Kawanaka (28th). Here again, Korea crushed the competition.
Football Women - First Round A
Their loss against the USA has to be an heart-crushing. Not to say that it's a shame to lose against a more experienced team but I think they were at their level and didn't deserve to go down 4-2 like this. The game was more a french loss than a US win even though Morgan and Wambach did an awesome job at profiting from those mistakes. I expect a better job against North Korea or else they will be most definitely out of the tournament which will be a huge let down.

Evening Report - Day 1
Archery Men - Team Event Road Cycling - Men's Road Race Equestrian - Eventing Dressage Fencing - Women's Foil Individual Judo - Women -48kg / Men -60kg Rowing - Men Shooting Swimming Table Tennis - Women Weightlifting - Women
Archery Men - Team Event
The french team lost against Mexico 212-220 with the lowest score of the Quarterfinals. It's a huge disappointment for this team which placed 2nd in the last 2 WC and could pretend to a silver medal. However it's not the biggest surprise of the day as the USA won against Korea and will most likely win the title against Italy or not, what a bunch of losers.
Result : Quarterfinals
Road Cycling - Men's Road Race
With a weakened team, France played its game with Chavanel in the Echappée and Demare with the sprinters. In a course which was supposed to be Cavendish's, Team GB failed miserably and surprise Vinokourov won the title with a attack in the last 15km.
Result : Final Rankings
Equestrian - Eventing Dressage
Dressage isn't the strong point of France during Eventing and it was proven once again that our team is one of the weakest. Still Lionel Guyon placed 15th.
Result : Rankings after the 1st Day
Fencing - Women's Foil Individual
In a category where France was one of the healthiest nation, all of our girls fell in the Ro16 against two surprisingly in-form Japanese girls. It's particularly disappointing given that our frenchies are the only few who have winning records against the Italians. I hope they'll do better in the Team Event and aim for a second place.
Result : Round of 16
Judo - Women -48kg / Men -60kg
Laëtitia Payet fell early (Ro16) against the future Olympic champion. This harsh bracket was according to her global level. Sofiane Milous made us dream today with an epic first round, a bull fight against the ever second Japanese Hiroaka. He went as far as the Bronze match but fell to the favorite coming into this tournament Sobirov, he places 4th.
Result : Women -48kg Ro16, Men -60kg Bronze Match
Rowing - Men
Particularly good day for Rowing as all boats are directly qualified for either the semis or the finals. The Double Scull Bahain/Berrest took the 9th and last time of the qualified teams, it's a bit worrying for this double as they are supposed to be the third best double. The Lightweight Four a french specialty made a huge impression by rowing in the 2nd best time, they were a new and inexperienced boat and seeing them at this level is refreshing. The Pair Chardin/Mortelette took the 2nd best time in the heat 1 where NZ took the World Record, a good performance but the semi will be a better indication of their form as the english boat cut their run towards the end. The last boat Quadruple Scull was the weakest one and they took the 9th and last time of the qualified.
Result : Double Scull, Lightweight Four, Quadruple Scull,Pair
Shooting
Both shooting teams went through their competition with no athletes being able to qualify for any finals
Result : Women's 10m Air Rifle, Men's 10m Air Pistol
Swimming
In competitions were they were complete outsiders, the frenchies didn't qualified. The only notable performance of Giacomo Perez d'Ortona who with the 17th time was 1'02'' away from a semi-final.
Result : Men's 100m Breaststroke, Women's 400m Individual Medley, Women's 100m Butterfly
Table Tennis - Women
Xian Yi Fang won her match 4-1 against the french-camerounese Hannfou.
Result : Round 1
Weightlifting - Women
Mélanie Bardis placed 10th in a competition where she had no real chances of medal.
Result : Women -48kgLast edit: 2012-07-30 06:29:03 |

Morning Report - Day 2
Badminton Basketball - Women Football - Women Gymnastics - Men Qualification Handball - Women Tennis Day 2 - Schedule
Badminton
Brice Leverdez won 2-0 in his 1st group stage match. The next match will be slightly harder.
Result : Match
Basketball - Women
The Women's Team had a strong defensive performance against Brazil to win 73-58. They suffered from some minor attention and dexterity issues but it's a good sign for the next match against Australia. A win against them and a first place is almost sure.
Result : Match
Football - Women
The Women's Team had a troubles getting started but ended up stomping on the North Korea 5-0. I had some doubts with the poor showing against the USA which could have been a a curshing loss but now they only win a small win against Colombia, the weakest team in the group. Being second will prevent them from having a very good seed but there is room for hope.
Result : Match
Handball - Women
In a match where I wanted to marry almost every Norwegian players (even though all of them are older than me), France had a strong offense in the first period and could rely on a impressive defense to counter the world's best team explosive come-back. They win with the smallest margin 24-23 but if they don't lose any match - which they should on paper. They will have a very smooth Ro8.
Result : Match
Gymnastics - Men Qualification
The french team had a correct performance since their best gymnasts are injured. Cyril Tommasone qualified for the All-Around competition with the 14th place and for the Pommel Horse with the 2nd place. France took the 8th and last qualifying place for the All-around Team Event. Gael Da Silva failed short of qualifying for the Floor event with a 10th place. Hamilton Sabot qualified for the Parallel Bars with the last qualifying place 9th. The only reasonable chance of medal will come in Pommel Horse for Cyril Tommasone.
Result : Qualification
Tennis
Alizé Cornet, Gilles Simon, Julien Benneteau all won 2-0 in singles. All Men's Doubles won 2-0 as well while the Women's Doubles lost 1-2. All around good day for the french team and it should continue tomorrow as well.
Result : Men's singles, Women's singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles
