Patch 1.5 deletes all files in the "Mods" folder.
Mods that belong to your own maps are required to exist in that folder.
So BACKUP your mod files BEFORE patching to avoid data loss.
Thanks for your attention. |

All my mods are gone..
But I had a back up of the most important one atleast..
Anyone knows what happened to them? The new patch deletes them forever? Or they are still around, although the editor no longer knows know their file type? :s
Looks like all textures most be reimported atleast..Last edit: 2012-08-01 20:42:02 |

I lol. Introduces new system to benefit map makers, sets map makers back by deleting files.
Such win

Could you or someone else reading this create a topic warning about the problem in their "custom maps" forum, too? A bug report alone won't help potential victims as mappers/modders usually read the custom map forum more than bug reports.Last edit: 2012-08-01 21:34:54 |

Well not much of a point backing it up as 1.5 removes mpq editing entirely... Still this patch is causing sooo many problems, I hope blizz roles out a hotfix soon. |

Pretty sure this is Blizzards way for forcing third party editing out, it's a shame how bad they've become.
They did the same thing with WoW, just steel ideas and embed them into WoW patch cycles, and their simple minded teams still can't keep up.
How sad blizzard. |

| What is the point in backing up the mods folder if MPQ editing doesn't work anymore? |

Sorry guys, I have a genuine question here, but what is meant my mods folder? Its those games that you download that are not officially from blizzard, right?
So things like Green Tea AI, darglein micro challenge, those are gone and I need to download them again? |

If you are a mapmaker, there is the possibility to create mods to either put all game data into multiple maps without copying everything or you use mods to get above the 20mb per file limit on battle.net.
Mods are archive files that can store data or files. So you could have stored data like a completely new fourth race for a self made campaign or just 20mb of sound files for your UMS map.
So we are not referencing to what people call "modding" (better: mpq modding) in SC2 general. We aren't tinkering in the original files with this. It's just a data storage which most people should use in their bigger projects. The problem is that we had to store the mods in the "Mods" folder to have them work in the editor test mode (no way around that except for usage from battle.net, but then you are online dependent and beed to download the file every day).
So, everyone who uses mods has lost their mod files with updating unless you made a backup outside this folder.
For me, it was no big deal as my mods only contain sound files and I had "backups" in my other localized SC2 installations.
BUT other mappers lost their mod files because they created backups within that folder. Nobody expected Blizzard to wipe out a complete folder. Normally it shouldn't care what else is in those folders as it should only be used, if a dependency to that file exists.
The mpq modding tinkered with the original data and could be exploited as I've shown in another thread (making invisible units super easy to spot, more visible nuke markers and possibly changing the mouse hit zone of units which you would like to focus during a fight like High Templar or Ghosts). It was required to shut down that way of modifying SC2 because of that, especially with the 3dsMax plugin for models which should be released "soon". That was a dangerous thing and is unrelated to the "mods" related to here.
So, basically Blizzard accidentally deleted your work which is a huge blunder on their end. Programs shouldn't be able to delete files that they didn't create. Blizzard knows the filenames of their own mods, so it's not really acceptable that this problem exists. It was either a bug or dangerous lazy coding (in the hope of deleting the mpq editing method which didn't require mpq modification, but file placement in properly named folder. But they know the names of these folders, too...). If you install a program, the program shouldn't go ahead and delete all other programs you had installed before on his own without notification, warning or permission request.

The stuff you download from battle.net is stored in a cache folder in "C:\ProgramData\Blizzard Entertainment\Battle.net\Cache". If some maps won't download properly or throw errors all the time (on lobby entrance attempt), wiping this cache can solve the problem. That has nothing to do with the "Mods" folder in the SC2 installation.Last edit: 2012-08-02 01:59:27 |
