Full Story
Excerpt: Eight female badminton doubles players were disqualified Wednesday from the London Olympics after trying to lose matches to receive a more favorable place in the tournament.
The Badminton World Federation announced its ruling after investigating two teams from South Korea and one each from China and Indonesia. It punished them for "not using one's best efforts to win a match" and "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport" in matches Tuesday night.
"We applaud the federation for having taken swift and decisive action," IOC spokesman Mark Adams told The Associated Press. "Such behavior is incompatible with the Olympic values."
The reason I bring this up, this seems to be something that happens in Starcraft 2 as well~ I'm of the personal opinion this is the fault of the tournament organizer. You can't blame the players for using strategy to get the best tournament results they can get. Bad tournament format forced this upon the players who do this for a living.

| Really should make it so that these games all have weight and that losing one brings you down majorly. Otherwise you end up with this happening. But really at this level of play I would expect better than this. |

They are playing to win the ultimate reward in the end. They are being penalized for using the best strategy to win a medal. This is just distracting the real problem of the crappy olympics. The bad judgements that have cost people medals and the payment system to appeal. This is just to cover it up. |

I bring this up in the GD, because it definitely has impact directly outside of the Olympics.
If the organizing forces decide that this kind of strategy is considered "unsportsmanlike" and can dq people for it, then should SC2 tournies (any esports tournies) do the same? Because it's definitely been done by pro gamers. |

| We figured this out with the proberush. Matches need to matter or they will not be played to the fullest. |

| This kind of decision disgusts me, because this is the approach so often taken by Blizzard- punishing the players for their own incompetence in fixing bugs/'exploits'. Last edit: 2012-08-02 06:03:25 |

| the olympics need to share a bit of the blame for not playing all the matches at the same time. The players were just playing to win (in the long run) |

It's hard to force someone into doing their best, especially if it lowers their chances of winning an olympic medal. The organizer is to blame for what happened.
The organizers should pay back the money that the audience paid to watch those games and then flip a coin to get fair results in the games being thrown away. The players shouldn't be punished for a bad organized tournament. |

The answer is that tournament organizers get to decide themselves, and the position of the IOC is entirely clear. You have to play to win when you're at the olympics, and all athletes knew that.
They were intentionally serving into the net and intentionally hitting shots outside the field. The crowd boo-ed them extensively and a black card was shown at one point. |

| My personal opinion is that it goes against the spirit of competition to not try one's hardest to win and that the players should respect that, I also think properly arranged tournaments will reflect that by not rewarding such strategies. |

Harhar why bring up SC2 analogies? These things happen everywhere. But this event is something Olympics specific. I respect your opinion, but if you are reluctant to put it in the Olympic Discussion thread like I suggest, where you feel it will not get enough exposure, you can at least ask this to be transferred to the London Olympics forum, where it belongs, like this thread http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=357355. |

I agree in the sense that this can be applied to any sport as well.
As much as wanting a medal, at least show some respect for the opposing team (or country if you will). And most of all, give the crowd a show. The Olympics would be pointless without the spectators. Last edit: 2012-08-02 00:20:20 |

From wikipedia: The Olympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius, a Latin expression meaning "Faster, Higher, Stronger". Coubertin's ideals are further expressed in the Olympic creed:
The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.
it seems a lot of peaople dont really care for that anymore. |

It's a ridiculous situation. The one who wins the gold at the olympics should be the best in the world, that's the whole point. Now they kicked out the best players in the world because they used the smartest strategy: Playing to win. If the organizers can't create a good format, sucks to be them, horrible to take it out on the players just doing their job.
London Olympics have been pure shit so far. |

If they are going to do stuff like this, then they should expell everyone in the physical strength/endurance events because they're all drug abusers.
Edit: What I mean is that they should fully enforce rules. Sorry to some who thought it was not relevent. Last edit: 2012-08-02 03:01:33 |
