http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2012/07/human-immortality-could-be-possible-by-2045-say-russian-scientists.html

This article on CBC news brings to light the work of Russian scientist Dmitry Itskov's research and planning to have a hologram-like avatar capable of preserving human life by the year 2045. He is pleading the worlds richest scientists to fund his project, and in return he is willing to set up their avatar for free when it is available.

http://2045.com/

The above is the main site of the project where you can find more information.

He states "Such research has the potential to free you, as well as the majority of all people on our planet, from disease, old age and even death." and confronts skeptics by claiming he has a team of the worlds leading scientists working on the project

There are obviously many sides to the argument, and many people will be either for or against this program. Alyssa Danigelis from Discovery states "There's a world of difference between pursuing a brain-controlled exoskeleton to help paraplegics regain control and wanting to essentially upload a human brain into an artificial body...I read a sci-fi novel involving disembodied live brains once. It didn't turn out well"

I'll recreate the poll that is present on the CBC website
Poll: Would you want this technology if it was available in your lifetime?

Yes, at all costs (670)

37%

I don't believe this technology will ever exist (449)

25%

10%

I'm not sure (84)

Your vote: Would you want this technology if it was available in your lifetime?

I have no idea what implications this holds for the world...and i'm excited to find out!

I think human immortality on this Earth is entirely unsustainable. But in any case, 'I don't believe this technology will ever exist' is what I voted for.

This sounds like someone watched too much Futurama when they were a child. I don't think this technology will exist and work. I think he's askin' for fundin' to prove the inevitable...that this won't ever work.

This kind of technology is definitely possible. I don't know if it's possible to have it by 2045, though.

Your brain is just an insanely complex parallel computing system. If you can duplicate the system using a synthetic computer then you will have the same person.

I'd love to have something like this. You could launch yourself into space, go into stasis, and wake up shortly before you arrive at your destination.

How interesting, tell me more!

I would definitely want this, if only out of curiosity. You can always stop using it if you don't like it. And preserving knowledge seems like a great alternative to dying and losing it.

My thought is that the brain would still deteriorate over time, perhaps you could invent/discover some sort of technology to drastically slows the process, but I am of the opinion that no biological organism lives forever. All forms of DNA fray over time (and immediately when one does gene splicing but that's a different story) and that tells me that no life is infinite. but who knows, perhaps it is possible.

I'd rather go full Ghost in the Shell type technology, no?

Living eternally as a hologram? Nah.

If they gave me a terminator exoskeleton to live in forever though I would be all over that shit.

I think that it is quite feasible for this technology to exist, and be available by 2045.

However, the concept of being immortal is utterly foreign and chilling to me.

I'd never want such a "gift", personally. There's just too much about immortality that can go wrong.

The reference could be to the dune series by frank herbert and the prequels by his son. Anywa,y if life is eternal there will be no room for new life and thus natural evolution will just stop.

why would you want to have a linear awarness forever ? When we die, lights may simply go out, but I don't believe it, so death may just be a refreshment...Living forever might be hell actually.

I don't think the solution to aging will be in the form of some fancy gizmo or something that looks like it came out of a dystopian-sci-fi novel. It'll probably be more subtle, like in the form of genetic therapy or whatnot. The robotic stuff really dips a bit too far into uncanny valley for a lot of people.

Something about this project feels kind of...I dunno...KONYish?
