Well well well, this thread is for you old-timers who, despite every incentive telling you to do otherwise, play D3 solo and withouth the AH.
I played this way myself (softcore) and have been from the start. I have tried party games and the AH too on other servers (thanks to this revolution that is global play). I cleared hell with a WD, a monk, and a DH. My sorceress and barb are waiting at the start of hell right now. What I say below is not about inferno (yet). I know that if you beat hell in 2 hours you could be thinking "WHAT?? THE GAME STARTS IN INFERNO YOU NOOB". Well bear with me or just go read something else.
All in all, I feel that, below inferno, the game is much better when played this way. Better than the EZPZ wreckage that occur in party/AH games. I have yet to play party games where everyone is self-drop.
Playing solo you take your time to enjoy every little thing. I have been zooming around (same as the areat summit in d2, anyone?). I had to learn how each mob attacks and how their animation works (better stuns/blind/etc this way). Learn boss fights to a T. The list goes on.
Playing without AH you still get the good feeling of finding gear upgrade (no legendaries though). I guess when you're stuck in inferno act2 with no gear and long hours of farming before you, things could look a bit grim. To beat hell I didn't do any farming though, the only areas I did twice were to satisfy the (broken) level requirement. I have been using the artisans (crafting gems before patch 1.3, sinking money like a boss).
When you can only depend on yourself to fight, only depend on yourself to gear up, and don't participate in the global economy, everything is a bit different (like gold doesn't have the same value at all). You can't use popular builds as you just can't focus on DPS or tanking as you don't have a broad choice of gear. Each class feels really different as you play every part of the game solo, only depending on your abilities.
One thing that would be a pain would be to find the best bow ever and not having a DH to play with. That's why i'm leveling every character at the same time. That and not to have an inferno char giving crazy loot to the others (that's why I haven't played in inferno yet, as I've not cleared hell with every class).
Sooo, what about you?
Do you play solo self-drop? Do you intend to play this way on another server?

Started playing with AH, rolled a new char without AH. Levelling up is fun when you forget about the AH. Going to AH and getting best in slot weapons makes levelling up too easy and tiresome imo (never understood ppl who have 'fun' playing something non-challenging). I think beating inferno might take ridiculously long though. The drop rates are low to facilitate AH, so finding better gear off the land in inferno is probably going to be much more frustrating. If you get multiple chars to inferno, maybe you can farm and rotate items and progressively all your chars will beat it, but idk. But I'm still having fun not being involved in the global economy, and lots of items are good by mere fact that what I have is so sub-par :D Would like to do this on HC mode if they fix latency and whatnot. |

| if they bumped up the drop rate or curved it more gently so you get more useable items without changing proportion of super elite items, sure. otherwise it's pretty time consuming. |

| This is basically how I play. I've sold a lot of stuff on AH but bought very little (mostly crafting materials for recipes I found solo). I have a lvl 60 char of every class which makes finding an actual upgrade more likely than if you only have one or two characters. Upgrades are relatively frequent if you kit out your followers too. |

Right I forgot to mention that aspect. I guess Inferno will take really long to beat (depending on luck and patches). But to get to level 60/beat Diablo Hell took me between 40 and 50 hours on each char. Not rushing things but not doing full level clears either. |

| I played this way up to inferno, and it was a lot of fun. After that, it was just much more convenient to use AH, and I had already seen much of the game. |

I play this way.. I got 1 char farming inferno act one. And i lvl one alt char every other day. Got 2 lvl 50's a lvl 45 and a lvl 31.. I sold some gear for a few k in the early stages of the game and made some profit with brimstones. Didnt use the AH to buy any gear...
Im doing all progress solo, but farm inferno with a group, because its a bit faster.. I managed to kill magda in act 2, but i died like 3 times leading up to it, which was too much to me.. So i decided to farm act 1.. Also, from that point on, act 2 gets a lot harder for a wizard (which is my main).
Im still enjoying the game quite a lot.. However finding upgrades is getting more difficult now.. |

Would be great if there were an offline mode with boosted drops where this would actually be feasible or some kind of AH opt out.
I love the convenience, and ultimately, I think it's a lot better for end game gear than the way we used to do it, but it's way more fun to find your own damn loot. |

Playing this way is fine and fun. It's easy until you want to start Inferno Act II.
I haven't done it completely yet, but at a guess I would say you need to farm Inferno Act I efficiently for 50+ hours at a minimum to do Inferno Act II. I played this way on a clean account to complete Act I...but I need to do alot of farming for Act II.Last edit: 2012-08-02 18:23:30 |

Just play for yourself without the AH all day every day and only use the AH to make money out of those who are willing to pay Cash for your stuff |
