I've been trying to get a friend of mine achievements on the latest patch. When I got mine they were trivially easy... Now I'm starting to feel as though some of them are simply impossible.
Some of them are clearly broken by the patch, for example Dead Eye Ghost in starcraft master. The ghost snipe is too weak to survive the level. Some people said that creating your own custom version will fix it, but it doesn't actually...
Anyway I've been focusing on the 4v1 Very Hard AI achievement, and I simply cannot do it. I've tried every trick in the book. Cannon rushing on megaton, flying to the island and spamming BC's on lava flow, spine crawler rushing, reaper harass on the desert map, turtling with siege tanks and letting them mine out the map... absolutely nothing works. The AI has become incredibly smart, it counters your play so well and knows exactly how to commit to attacks. The Burning Tide map is no longer an option either.
If anyone has ANY idea how this achievement is possible post 1.5 patch please post below. And don't just tell me what used to work please, actually try it yourself, because I've tried everything I could think of and they all get crushed by the modern AI.
And I guess this could be a general purpose thread for discussing achievement strats that work with the CURRENT patch, since every other thread I've read is outdated. |

| They patched the AI a very long time ago.. You probably got the achievements before that patch (pre 1.03 i think).. Most of the cheese methods stopped working then. The turtle-on-the-island tactic on lava flow still works, if you're half decent at defending hundreds (literally) of waves of drops, and extremely patient. If you got the balls, take the other island. |

To survive the 1v4 Very Hard AI, I used Terran against all zergs. Siege expand, and mass tanks and marines. I don't have a replay but I did change around the build order of a standard expand a bit to accomodate the big push.
Same thing I done vs 1v2 Insane. A lot of trial and error though. Masters Macro by the way. |

Yeah I tried islands, rushed BC's... I got like 8 BC's out and then they started dropping. They had SOOO many warp prisms I couldn't even hold them off with my 8 BC's. They dropped off so many zealots and immortals and just killed my buildings completely because my BC's didn't do enough DPS to stop them. I looked at the replay and saw they had practically every base so I figured this path was not even worth attempting again. When was the last patch you tried this technique? |

I made an attempt at Lava Flow today:
Setup:
Me - Terran Them - 4x Protoss (Very Hard)
Game:
I loaded up 5 SCVs and floated to the nearby island. Got 1 Supply Depot, then CC.
From there I just mass produced SCV and turrets where I thought they would drop (the points where the land to land distance is smallest is where they will mostly try to drop). I also got 5-6 Siege tanks that could shoot The colossi that were in range of the turrets. After a while they gave up colossi and just send prisms, rays and phoenix.
About 25 Turrets and nothing could get into my base, so I made 3 Starports that pumped out BC.
Got 200/200 supply, and now they were making motherships, carriers and Void Rays.
As long as I stayed in turret range nothing could harm me, but I couldn't do anything either. At 35 mins I moved out with my BCs, who got vortexed, then straight up killed by Carriers and Void rays. GG.
Perhaps if you are patient and just poke a little bit until they are mined out you might do it with this strat, but I allready have the achievment from an earlier patch, so I wouldn't bother
When I surrendered at 38 minutes the 4 of them had a total of 56k minerals, 26k gas and could mine about 8 full bases more.Last edit: 2012-08-05 19:45:38 |

| Try this for 4v1 very hard AI. Play on the boneyard as T vs 4 Z. Go 2 rax expand into 3 rax and use mass bunkers to hold off their initial attacks, then go mass tanks and a few pfs to defend the ledge. You can build turrets and bcs too, but dont get too many bcs or they will react by getting a lot of air. After they mine out in about an hour, take out their bases. AI is still not very good after updates, all they have is one strong initial attack. If you can hold it off while constantly producing workers, you're set for victory. |

Okay, I'll describe my method on lava flow
Play terran vs 4 zerg. (or 2 zerg if vs insane AI) Spawn next to the island. If you don't, just restart. Lift off and fly there. Establish your economy, get ~10 marines and start building a LOT of turrets. Minimum 1 layer around half of the island (you don't need to turret the side facing the edge of the map). Get 3-4 layers of turrets at the place where you get dropped. Serves as additional firepower against 2000 overlords and more importantly, prevents units from unloading. There's gaps at the edge of the islands. Fling marines inside them. If a single unit drops, your setup is ruined. Don't forget to set hi-sec auto tracking. If you have balls, take the other island. Most importantly, don't build any BCs until all 4 enemies are starved out. If you build BC -> they build a fleet of corruptors, which will fly around and snipe your BCs while you're still turtling up. You have a ton of extra OC energy, you can use it to scan to see depletion rate of minerals on the main island, and if really bored, send MULEs to mine out the map (slightly) faster. The game is gonna last 2-3 hours, so be prepared. |

| When I was doing the FFA achivement I did that same thing, but I often had a OC floating dropping mules on the minerals so they had less to mine from. I believe it still may work :D |

| Have you tried reapers? If they move out to attack you, you can just jump a cliff to harass with reapers. Usually all of their armies will turn back to defend. Just keep picking off buildings with your reapers, or transition to something that can take their armies head on while continually harassing them. |

Ah! Excellent a replay! I'll definitely check this out and report my results to your thread. Thanks. |
