I have finally realized what is the biggest and the only real problem of Diablo 3
Before I start, let me say something:
I have wrote something about what I consider to be top 5 mistakes Blizzard made in D3 here.
However as Im trying to think objectively, I then asked myself "Is this all really Blizzard fault?". And there is where we begin.
Shortly about Diablo 2:
Diablo 2 is one of the greatest games ever made. Released in 2000, with Lord of Destruction expansion pack following year later, received possitive ratings, won many awards and stayed on top of most selling games years after release. You could hardly find any other game that people were coming back to years after years.
But why Im talking about this? Its not to show anything about D2 vs D3 comparision. Its to show that D2 was really damn really good game and milions of players loved it for years.
It did not last forever though 
That sad face might seem stupid - isnt it obvious, how could it last forever? People had to eventually make better game...
Guess what - its not true. To this day, there was no hack & slash action RPG that would defeat Diablo 2. Sure new games with "better than 2001 - 2D - 800x600 resolution" graphic were released and players went to try them, but still, their hearts were beating for D2. D2 was game that did remain active for decade in both player base and sales.
So what happend you ask?
Despite fact that no better game was ever released, despite fact that people always loved D2, despite fact that game is same fun as always was... Despite that, something is broken.
In cursed year of 2007, one dupe method was leaked and eventually named "public dupe method". This turned out to be the first step... Ladder became flooded by best items, one could not trade with other but friends (sometimes not even with friends) and eventually "Hel" rune was worth more than high runes.
Not like duping didnt exist before... Thanks to what we would nowadays call very poor server architecture, but completely fair and right in year 2000, duping always existed in D2. About bots - well not always, but it didnt really take more than 2-3 years either.
But times were different - no facebook, nothing special in game, no general awarness of those things... Everyone knew that "something they call duping exists" but only few really had any idea.
Up until cursed 2007. After that, literally everyone knew. Blizzard eventually - after long and really painful couple months - fixed it. But it was never same - in years 2008 and 2009, people were searching for dupe methods and bots and despite some sort of effort on Blizzard side it became... just bad.
Thats when I stopped playing. And almost everyone I know, so Id not really say that game survived decade, but some do so, hence what I said previously.
My point is:
Despite Diablo 2 is one of greatest games of all time, best hack & slash game of all times, it eventually got destroyed...
...by its own players.
Problem of game like this is, that it takes 1 player to destroy game for 999 others.
So now, get back to D3:
It takes 1 botter out of 1000 players to ruin prices and effectively make MF/GF pointless.
It takes 1 scumbag out 1000 players, who is willing to scam people using trade window/item stacks exploit, to make trading those items this way impossible for everyone.
It takes 1 idiot out of 1000 players, willing to exploit MF hot swap to force other 999 players to play way they dont want.
and so on...
Problem simply is that you are highly dependant on every other person on battle.net. If few players decide to bot, it affects value of your items and gold, thus your gameplay and everything a lot. If few idiots decides to sacrifice their own fun and do MF swap, it forces you to choose wheter to not have fun or play with disadvantage, even more increasing feelings of unfairness and frustration. It takes just a few people to exploit something good to do harm to others to ruin that feature to literally everyone.
Final word:
It took 7-10 years for people to destroy Diablo 2.
It took 2-3 weeks for people to destroy Diablo 3.
Dont get me wrong, Im not saying D3 is good game - in fact, Blizzard failed in almost every aspect they could. Perhaps even more...
But for Heavens sake - its Blizzard, its Diablo 3. Even with game that has not even 1/10 of D2 quality level, they sold so much and if that was all, people would be playing it... Because its Blizzard and fricking D3. They will try to minimize effects of their poor decisions in the future...
But game is already dead...
Killed by botters.
Killed by hackers.
Killed by exploiters.
If Blizzard would make D3 like 100 times better (that would be roughly ~2 times better than D2 was) it would just delay inevitable and make game survive maybe 2-3 months instead of 2-3 weeks.
So despite fact that Blizzard presented very poor work there and D3 can not be considered anything but huge disappointment in eyes of anyone with eyes, it was still perfectly viable game that could became playable after couple patches.
But it is dead now - killed by its own players. In this genre, there is no democracy and it takes 0,1% of players to force wrong way. And since just RMAH itself attracted many profit seeking abusers in addition to general video games population - which is probably well over that that 0,1% anyway - I guess what Im trying to say here:
Diablo 3 had no chance no matter how hard would Blizzard try. This world is too bad.
Just go play SC2 where hacking isnt such a big deal (it just makes you angry after 1-2 game, it doesnt ruin whole ladder for everyone) and overall population is not so hack-friendly due to competitive nature of game, or pay2play games like WoW where people are forced to take things more seriously by their own money and dont fall for every exploit out there + it gives Blizzard better reason to keep things smooth.
Im now deeply sorry for many bad things I have said about Blizzard in last couple months. Yes, D3 sucks and you did terrible, terrible damage there, but you have almost no responsibility on how it ended up.

the biggest problem of diablo 3 is so simple.
no, it is not the auction house. It is not the graphics. It is not the community. Its not even the items...
ITS BECAUSE THEY MADE THE PUBLIC GAME SYSTEM TERRIBLE. PUT AUCTIONEER IN GAME. MAKE GAMES WITH TITLES. DIABLO 2 HAD A SENSE OF COMMUNITY. WHY DIDNT THEY MAKE SOME SORT OF GIANT CITY WHERE YOU HANG OUT IN AND CAN TRADE WITH PEOPLE ON YOUR SERVER... WHERE IS THE COMMUNITY!?!?!?!? WHERE IS THE SENSE OF HAVING YOUR CHARACTER IN GAME?!?!?!

Hackers/exploiter didn't killed D3, even D2 was hacked like hell right from the get-go, if you played at launch you should know this, you could even dupe items by turning off the internet.
At the time soj's were the currency, and rares very powerfull, every server had their own duped godlys of choice (in USEast the top 3 weapons were soul scratch, doom loom, and dread harp)

If anything, duping(which was underground at the time) HELPED the economy, players could aim to have some kind of riches (sojs) and then gear up their character with very desirable items (above), this system was reinforced in the xpack, where they introduced great uniques, and then runewords. And again, duping helped, if it weren't for dupes only 1% of the player base would ever have a WF or BotD.
The problem is that D3 tried something different and failed COMPLETELY, the itemization in the game is so fucking boring and dull that it hurts, what is the ultimate goal in D3? Get more dex in a slot, vit in another, maybe crit... there is no sense of accomplishment, no super godly trophy item that makes people drool.
2, D3 has no game rooms, i can't stress enough how terrible this is, in D2 you could make a game and name it with baal run, mephs runs, duels, trades or whatever and then people who wanted the same thing as you would join. Good luck trying to find vault runs/arreat runs partners in D3, and even if you do, the monsters HP scale in such an atrocious way that you be better off by playing on your own.
3, the AH, people spend more time playing the AH then the game itself, not much else to say.
4, the RMAH, Blizzard said that they introduced this so that players wouldn't have to resort to shady sites.... the amount of bullshitness in that statement still amazes me to this day. They make it sound like the vast majority of players bought stuff out of sites.
5, no pvp or hostility feature.... no brainer.
6 no ladder, another consequence of the addition of an RMAH.
7, Jay Wilson, all of the topics above were idealized by Jay Wilson, my best bet is that he was a massive scrub in D2 and completely clueless on what actually made the game work, get someone that has just finished hell and is crying over because he's getting stomped in act 1 inferno, now put that guy in the lead for the next diablo game, that is Jay Wilson.Last edit: 2012-08-07 09:32:33 |

Another "diablo 3 is dead" post.
A simple ladder season system would fix the mentioned problems. D3 is in bad shape right now but it's not sure it'll stay that way. Wait and see what happens in 1.04 at least before making yet another whine thread. |

| What's killing the game for me is that it's just not fun. Right now, even though I've played D2 on and off for like a decade, I'm still not bored of the game itself. If some of my friends invited me to run through D2 with new characters in a LAN party, I would totally be down. D2 is fun as hell no matter how many times you play through it. D3 was good the first time through normal, and I had a lot of fun, however making a second character and playing through the game was boring as heck. My third character is just sitting there at lvl 40 because I can't bring myself to play through the campaign again. |

its not the bots/exploits/cheaters.. d2 had such big problems its whole economy was based on duped items and half the people I know ran bots. Yet it was and still is awesome at hell. sorry but you didn't have an epiphany or anything.
in short all u can do is find slightly more upgraded gear than your current. d2 had runes, jewels, charms, runewords, cool quest bonuses (ie. +1 skill points, +20 health, +10 all res etc), leveling, pvp, game lobby, a community, building a specific character. Guess what? remove all the cool shit and the game is a joke. They haven't improved a single thing on d2 except the graphics.

It's cool that you take time to write these huge posts about why the game sucks and stuff, but let me give you the five biggest reasons nobody cares, and you need to stop:
1) Nobody reading this forum has the power to change anything. The game has been released. If you don't like it, don't play. It's that simple. But please keep your damn mouth shut and quit trying to get everyone all riled up.
2) This whole subforum is dedicated to D3. It's not dedicated to trolls that hate the game. We're not elitists at TL, and you're always welcome in our community, but nobody likes the dude sitting in the corner telling everyone that something they like sucks and that they are stupid for not noticing.
3) None of your ideas are original. You could have renamed that thread "5 differences between D2 and WoW and D3" and it would have been more civil and accurate.
4) Botters ruin the game? Come on. All Botters do is give people an easy way to obtain wealth. If you're not trying to be the richest dude on the server why do you care? Just because somebody else has something for free that you had to work for? Who cares. Grow up. I payed D2 for years and Botters never bothered me.
5) Nothing constructive can come from these threads. You don't like the game. Too bad. Nothing we can do about it. Stop pissing in our Cheerios. |

| I find this post a little gross. Firstly it is unnecessary and there is nothing anyone on this forum can do. And secondly I feel like it is no ones fault but blizzards for making a game that simply isnt rewarding to play. This is mostly because of the boring item system and repetative nature of the game. |

I haven't played D2, but I feel this post pretty much sums of the sentiment of every D2 player. Everyone seems to have lost hope for the game, even though it has been out for such a short period of time.
Well, I seem to be in the minority of people who still enjoy the game. I log on a couple time a week, to just mess around and kill stuff, get to God-like status on my main toon, and progress in hardcore. I feel like there is a really good game here if people just learn to stfu and just enjoy the game. I can't wait for the period of time where all the complainers have left the forums, and all that is left are people who like playing this game. |

You know what? It's something about 20th post, that counts all the flaws in D3, and I'm kinda fed up with them... so, time for my tyrade/rant.
I'm playing the game like it was released yesterday.
None of your points bother me.
1. Screw the bots. I don't use them and they don't affect my playstyle AT ALL. I'm fine.
2. I love the auction house. If anything, I would enhance it with few search filters. Again, I'm fine.
3. I love one currency, gold. I live in Europe, in a culture slightly different from my African neighbors, where not haggling is considered an offence. I DON'T like to haggle. Yet again, I'm fine.
4. I actually prefer automatic stats allocation. The D2 system was flawed. This one is flawed, too, but at least I don't have to put 155str on sorc, just so I can wear 4socket shield. Guess what - I'm fine. Oh, and I hit stuff every time with my barb.
5. Named games? PLEASE. Here's an example:
scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll
-- Oh, wait! A game that isn't trade of some kind, enter!
Ups, yes it is.
Exit.
scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll... repeat.
6. Hmmm... game style of D2 over a game of D3. A game that ISN'T a boss run, lasting a minute. Or three. WOW! I'M GOD DAMN FINE.
7. PVP will be here. Relax.
8. PVP! It's a god damned arena, no more TPPK, no more annoing as hell bored trolls, that entered the games and killed me for no reason other than their amusement. Screw them. Go to the arena.
9. Exploits? Please. EVERY game in history have exploits. You all just troll these forums because this is D3 and not Cannon fodder 3. They repair them as they show up. Have some respect for that, not every company does that on the scale blizzard does.
These points are countless. SC2 when released was also flawed. 90% bitched about something. I don't know, obviously I don't have the correct numbers. But half of them left, fortunately. The game is constantly worked on. With, or without the whiners.
Seriously, I hope all the haters will leave this game and return when an expansion will be released. And one more thing, as Terranasaur wrote above: "nobody likes the dude sitting in the corner telling everyone that something they like sucks and that they are stupid for not noticing." So yeah, you voiced your opinion. Good for you, here's your hate medal. Now go grow up and please, people, please stop with these threads.

I like diablo 3 for the sole fact I have made money back from it, and legally (I guess selling my accounts in ffxi or gold in wow isnt terrible) but I can play a bit, find an item, list it on the RMAH and actually buy other games with diablo items essentially. Ive cashed out around 5 times now (post-ias announce, pre-1.03, post 1.03, post beating Inferno, and once after). Withdrew $1k+ into paypal, then bought some budget gear with MF to farm act 2 and hit the $250 balance limit selling terrible items for a few bucks (100 dex quiver with disc for $5? Yep someone bought it...) or flipping gear like a 26% stormshield I tested on my barb alt for 2m to and didnt like so i sold it for $15 on the RmAh. Stuff like that NO OTHER game can offer. Its a system that I think is awesome and should be in every game in the future. Buy a game, sell stuff in it for real money, get bored with the game and sell your stuff for money before you uninstall. Can't ask for better than that. Everyone wins - except GameStop I guess.

the biggest problems of d3 atm is the combination of
a) the game in its current state being a single player game
b) the auction house robbing off everyone from the reward for his efforts (you almost never find items that are an improvement for yourself, all gaming is focused around making gold to buy items on the shitty and anonymous AH...)
the combination of this makes the game unbelievably dull.
if either of these two problems were fixed, the game would be so much more fun. |
