First of all, heres a pic with my gear, stats, etc:
http://i.imgur.com/xSHWs.jpg
I usually play with Hungering Arrow - Devouring, Cluster Arrow - LFB/CB, Preparation, Smokescreen, Shadow Power - Gloom and Marked for Death - Motal Enemy or Bat Companion, but most other builds play pretty similarly. I think i have basics down and was able to fight my way to Ghom with 6-8 deaths, and get him low (~20%) after around 5 attempts, but i dont really feel good about playing in act 3.
Problems:
My DPS is abysmally low, 37k without sharpshooter if im playing with crit chance (crits 1shot almost all trash in act 1 and feels more consistent) and only a bit higher with crit damage, though sharpshooter inflates that a lot more, my average DPS is still low. I find myself sometimes unable to kill stuff, or running out of disc with prep on cooldown, and from looking at others it seems like increasing DPS a ton should help with that. I would also like to play higher DPS styles, i dont really mind dieing now and then as long as i am able to blow stuff up quickly and efficiently. Also, my gear is pretty heavy on crit chance, im missing 3.5% from rings, 1% from quiver, maybe a bit from somewhere else, the only reason it is down at ~40% chance is because the helm has no crit on it (it was an EHPwhore helm)
I seem overly fragile - I have 36k HP, when i entered act 3 i bought this chest (max disc, 157 vit, 2 sockets, 6% life) as well as helm (152 vit, armor, socket for 13% life) and back when i got them i resocketed to vitality to break into the act - But i have found with my almost nonexistant resistances, a single hit from a mortar minion or various ranged attacks (most notably those annoying bad things that swoop down behind you as you progress and flank you, the ones that glitch out and become invunerable, appearing/dissapearing next to you and hitting you once) will deal around 50-55k damage, which will flat out kill me if i dont avoid every single attack of that type, i came to question why i was trying to gear vitality in the first place. If i had ~27k hp and 300 resist all, i would be able to take a hit from those if i was at full health, but it seems difficult to get the resist all stat at any meaningful number with dex and vit, and inflates the price of items massively. I have been wondering if it is best to just re-gear a lot for DPS, accept that many of these attacks will kill me if i am hit, and take the stance of killing all threatening mobs before i have the chance to have my discipline worn down by needing to smokescreen or shadow power to take a hit or regain life etc, and playing like more of a glass cannon instead of worrying about taking those big hits that seem to be crippling even if you have the resist and health to survive them.
Forgot to mention, my passives are usually Sharpshooter, Steady Aim, Archery.
Would it be wise to drop survivability for as much damage as possible, being as i dont usually get hit anyway? What changes should i prioritise on my gear? Am i going about this completely the wrong way, and is there an easy way to double my damage while pulling 300-400 all resist out of my ass?
Im kinda lost right now, any help would be appriciated (:
I can progress but it is quite painful and it feels like i am doing something horribly wrong.Last edit: 2012-08-07 08:03:00 |

you have 58k dps with sharpshooter. some people dont even recommend farming A3 using 58k dps without sharpshooter. not worth it to farm A3 with that low dps. you have 37k dps without sharpshooter, honestly it is much better to stick with farming a1 or a2
you don't need sharpshooter especially when you have 40% crit chance. switch that out for a different passive. since you're using cluster arrow, at the moment you have enough hatred for 2 clusters. if you want to have enough hatred to use a 3rd, switch sharp shooter for grenadier, otherwise use tactical advantage (along with smoke screen), although grenadier is the better choice. if you want a 4th cluster arrow, switch archery for vengeance. steady aim alone is better than archery aloneLast edit: 2012-08-07 09:05:39 |

It really depends how much gold you have available to spend on repairs, but I feel you can get a lot better rings/ammy for under 100k a piece. Try to get like dex/crit dmg/all res and that'll help your survivability a ton! Bracer can also use an upgrade for cheap, just try to get higher stats, and don't worry too much sacrificing that crit chance. Your base crit chance is so good, you would benefit a lot from switching it to crit damage, or finding a better balance of those stats.
It always sounds like a good idea to play no vit glass cannon until you run into reflect damage and 1hko yourself Try to keep a healthy balance of survivability and dps! |

But can i really improve my DPS by that much? I dont know what im missing, it feels like i have to pay 10m per item to get those higher stats. 37k DPS just feels like nothing.
Im not really trying to farm act 3 more efficiently than act 1 or anything, i know that is extremely difficult (very high gear requirements etc) but im kinda wondering what to buy. I earn like 100k/hour farming act 1 (warriors rest, warden/butcher runs) but it feels like i dont have a goal. I havnt progressed past Ghom but it seems like i need a lot more damage to do it comfortably. My DPS is 78k with sharpshooter and crit damage, but crit damage instead of chance inflates it artificially a lot. With constant fire it will sit down around 40kLast edit: 2012-08-07 09:18:49 |

My gear is not much better than yours, in terms of quality, but I have 108k dps with SS.. Crit Damage does a lot more for you than Crit Chance, especially if you run sharpshooter. And I'm serious, 100k spent carefully on a piece of gear can be a huge upgrade for you |

Just for reference, I beat Act 3 and 4 with 45k DPS (no Sharpshooter), 2700 Armor, 300 Res All and 25k Health.
I basically came to the conclusion that attacks can and will always one-shot you (especially in Act 4) unless you spend a lot of gold/money, so if you're really intent on beating the game I'd recommend accepting a lot of deaths to do so.
Shadow Power with Gloom should really be your standard. As long as you can take more than one hit with that up, you should be capable of beating the game (though it will be extremely frustrating).
EDIT: About damage, your stats are extremely similar to mine. Biggest difference, I think I had about 100 more dex, 15% more Attack Speed, 50% more Crit Damage, but around 9% less Crit Chance.
One thing to realize is that every point of Critical chance is only increasing your damage by 0.01*Crit Damage.Last edit: 2012-08-07 09:22:13 |

I know my crit damage rings/amulets are not particularly good. They were cheap picks to try out how crit damage felt. Is there anything else im missing though? After i replace the helm+chest my damage should be a bit higher, but nothing revolutionary, and it will cost millions to hold those stats and get the 300-400allres required to take a hit from those few annoying ranged mechanics if i dont go glass cannon.
Any particular reccomendations for gear?Last edit: 2012-08-07 09:23:33 |

Well, the real question is, where's your comfort level for beating the game? Unless you have several million to spend, you're really not looking at upgrades, mostly just trading some stats for others.
With that said, you could stand to lose ~200 vit. A helm with 100 Dex, 50 Vit and 50-60 Res All shouldn't be too pricey, and a belt with 120 Dex, 50 Vit and 60 Res All isn't bad either.
For about 100k, you can get a ring with ~20% Crit damage and 120-140 Dex.
If you drop 2% Crit Chance on your bracers, you should easily add 50 Res All for extremely cheap, plus some other tertiary but relevant stats.
That'll give you roughly 150 more Res All and about 150 more Dex. Not entirely sure where that leaves you in terms of Crit Chance (around 33% is minimum for non-SS usage) and DPS, so I'd say the choice is between trading out our amulet for something with 160+ Dex and 50+ Crit Damage, or getting some gloves with slightly lower crit chance but about 60 more Dex.
Run this through a damage calculation spreadsheet before you actually start buying stuff.Last edit: 2012-08-07 09:44:26 |

Thats not enough all res to take a single hit from any random mortar minion or various ranged attacks that are hard to dodge, id still need to smokescreen or shadow power them |

Better get used to it then. As I told you before, you're going to get one-shotted. Unless you have hundreds of millions of gold, you simply can't get the requisite stats to be able to reliably tank hits.
If you're completely intent on beating the game without spending 400 hours farming (or whipping out the credit card), then you'll have to play bullet-hell and use your Discipline solely for crisis management. |

get a better bow...your helm is pure crap as well. come on
#edit i spoke too soon. the rest of your stuff is low tier as well. you can probably find 20k dps from 100k items alone.
crit chance is the most expensive stat especially at maximal range. you can prob up your dmg by foregoing it altogether and go for dex/crit dmg combo and run around with ss + cluster bomb combo. Last edit: 2012-08-07 11:14:56 |

So that Shadow Power + Gloom are actually useful. If you're willing to go full glass cannon, then Smokescreen is just fine.
However, it seems you still want to take some hits, and tiptoeing through Act 3 and 4 is much easier when you have a 3 second panic button, and then use Smokescreen solely to avoid bad situations. |

If you plan to get VIT, you should get roughly 300 resist all (physical resist mostly)
otherwise, the 36K hp won't be put to good use. you mention that you're a glass cannon, so the 36k HP confuses me, but I can guarantee you'd get a LOT more benefit with your build if you had just +150 more resist all |

| Thanks for the info everyone, i was kinda aimless before, trying to build into high critchance+dmg as i had no problems at all in act 1 and only slight difficulty in act 2, but act 3 hit me like a brick wall with everything suddenly doing what seemed like 5x as much damage, from range, and in unavoidable swarms that would run me out of disc before i could kill stuff, with all of the random 1 shots added on even though i doubled my HP in the act 2-3 transition and i didnt have a problem with them before. I do have 200 phys resist and looked at your guides some MysticaL and tried out the skill set but i dont think that way is how i really want to play. I bought some cheap gear to take me to 100k DPS with SS (though it farms slower than my 57k dps gear in act1, because it takes a crit to oneshot a white trash mob, and i lost like 20% crit chance) and im gonna farm some millions to work on the dex+allres, but im actuly kinda unsure of playing demonhunter after watching others play monk/wwbarb who seem to take on trash just fine without playing bullet hell. Need more time to figure out this game |

Ive changed my gear quite a bit, but i was wondering what the best slots are to get allres on? Rings/Amulets/Gloves seem higher priority for crit damage (and maybe some crit chance or attack speed) and bracers/helm/quiver seem important to get crit chance on (which blows the price WAAAAY up), also with max disc on chest and quiver limiting choices (50 disc over 30 pretty mandatory for survival IMO)
Ive got some good gloves (high dex and crit damage rolls, 66 allres, some vit) and my ms boots currently have high dex and 40/40 physical/all resist, aside from that i have bits of physical resist thrown all over the place but very little if any all res.
My price point is maybe 500k-1m per gear slot right now, if i have to take it up then i will but i dont have a crapton of gold yet, and i just wanted to ask for advice on the slots so im not making really bad purchases for my first expensive pieces in some slots.
And to clarify i am not really playing a "traditional" glass cannon, but im trying not to play overly tanky either. DPS is a high priority but i dont want to get one shot by some mortar minion or a standard ranged attack if i can help it.Last edit: 2012-08-09 14:06:34 |
