Pokemon World Championships Website
The annual Pokémon World Championships are just about to begin! Pokémon Trading Card Game and video game players from all over the globe are ready to begin their quest to become World Champion. The action kicks off Friday with the Last Chance Qualifier, and will continue until Sunday afternoon when a new champion has been determined.
This year's competition returns to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island of Hawaii, site of the 2010 Pokémon World Championships. The players will be competing for over $100,000 in scholarships, as well as an invitation to next year's Pokémon World Championships.
The finals for the Masters players of the TCG portion is going to be streamed live with commentary, and this all comes from inspiration from the SC2 e-sports scene.
Hopefully some of you guys will follow along and get interested in the game! The online multiplayer game is coming out next week after Worlds, and the new tournament season begins on September 1st, so now would be the ideal time to get in on this fun game! Spread the word!
I myself am a participant in the exclusive invite-only TCG tournament so wish me luck! |

It's not written anywhere, but a group of people from 'The Top Cut', a site dedicated to streaming games and providing media content for the Pokemon TCG was def inspired by SC2, and now PUI announced they are streaming their games, so they're going with the current trend of streaming live games which I believe started really blooming when SC2 was released correct? |

Err, no? Streaming live games has been around forever. First Korea, then Japan and then the international sites, starting with(in terms of popularity) livestream, then ustream and then justin.tv and own3d.tv. There were other sites as well but those aren't worth mentioning. |

Were there this amount of streams and coverage for brood war as there is for sc2? I mean the whole media coverage, not just literally streaming only. I'm not here to argue over something I perceived after seeing how the Pokemon TCG started getting coverage through inspiration from SC2.
Tom Cruise - TCG or vgc? TCG is mine. |

One of the founders of The Top Cut (Pooka), who have done a lot of livestreaming coverage for PTCG is a fan of SC2 and a TL user... here's his blog that details this inspiration: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=288356
Not taking words out of his mouth but I think the blog covers what OP mentioned. The Pokemon Company will be livestreaming only the finals with commentary on Sunday, but apparently The Top Cut and crew have permission to record/stream games from Swiss rounds and/or top cut rounds as well.
I only started mid season this year and whiffed Canadian top cut by resistance... 34th, with a T32. Will definitely be following Worlds though! |

I don't understand why this gets so many comments in Gamespot but SC2 coverage barely gets any.
Must be the age group difference. |

These commentators were terrible... they're Gamespot people who clearly have had no experience with the game or the TCG. Didn't convey the game to beginners, nor did they have any worthwhile analysis other than saying what each card did (and they did a bad job at that). The community casters who are far better were there but were shunned for these guys? Ugh.
Game 3 of the TCG finals was quite exciting and went down to the last turn and a big misplay by the US player who failed to notice that the second Shaymin his deck that he was going for in his final turn with the Ultra Ball turned out to be prized and cost him the game. That, and his ultra aggression where he went all in with the Mewtwo EX and all his energies on the board when he absolutely didn't need to. |

| This started to become interesting for me when I found out that I was a camp counselor for the brother of the repeat Masters champion. I still have no idea what is happening, though. |

| Yea, can't help but feel they lost a real good opportunity here to reach a larger audience. Oh well... it's the first year that these Worlds have been livestreamed, so it's a step in the right direction I suppose. |

I tried my hand at commentating the finals haha I learned that you need to practice commentating to be good at it that's for sure. Unfortunately it was aimed at people who know how to play competitively and I was providing strategy analysis... at least what I could, having not played the vgc2012 metagame in like 5 months.
I don't know anything about tcg.
During the semifinals of vgc they were saying "it really could be considered a sport. Look at starcraft 2 as it is now in their community" or something. I really think they are trying to model the rest of this 'industry' I guess.Last edit: 2012-08-13 15:31:13 |

For TCG's in general, when they are streamed, it turns out really really badly. Since caster don't have experience, and aren't able to portray the game to newbies. The only people I've seen be able to do TCG streams and pull it off well are Star City Games, and WOTC themselves, WOTC has been doing it for close to a decade though, and Star City games uses the same casters and techniques that WOTC uses.
Pokemon I don't think has the same structure for streaming that wotc has. I think the same goes for pretty much every other TCG. It will take time for the structure to appear, as casters learn how to cast. |
