I first started playing BW around my sophomore year of high school with some friends who had been playing since they were in 6th grade. I usually go for the storylines in games so I thought that the Protoss with their mystical warrior aura were pretty cool, so I started out playing them. My early bases consisted of a slowly migrating mass of photon cannons across BGH. (migrating as my friends toyed with me by blowing them up behind me as my base migrated from one corner to the next)
But after I started playing a little more seriously, i.e. learning actual BOs and watching pro games, I tried to apply these concepts to my game with little success except in PvT. The match up made much more sense to me. In fact so much more sense I quickly realized that I really preferred the terran style gameplay. I've always preferred turtling, defensive play, methodical strategy and careful planning in RTS games. All of these seemed to characterize Terran play more than Protoss ( and I knew Zerg was pretty much the antithesis of my style) so I switched to Terran. After watching Stylish and more pro games everything made even more sense, particularly TvZ in a way I hadn't been able to understand SC before.
So I'm curious, are there general established styles behind each race? Or am I just making this up. Does each race have to play a different style based on their mechanics, or is it the player who defines their style regardless of the race they play. I'm curious as to why other people picked their race, particularly those who have spent a lot of time playing and achieved some success. |

| I think you can play any style with any race. But cheap zerg units tend to more aggressive play and non moving sieged tanks tend to more defensive play. As for protoss your play style generally depends on what race your opponent is playing. |

| I'm probs the guy who has changed races the most. Started off as Protoss because the mirror wasn't BS all the time... Then I hated PvZ forge FE crap so I switched to Terran... hated TvT m/u and couldn't TvZ for my life. Switched to Zerg, hated it because I could only cheese vs Protoss (3/4 hatch hydra busts), switched back to Protoss and play LML build PvZ with TvP race pick. |

I wanted to play the hardest race, so I picked up protoss.
I seriously thought protoss was harder because zealots are expensive and have no range while marines and lings are cheap and marines even shoot air

I fell in love with terran after learning how to FD ---> 6 fact
However, i started messing around with the toss's 3 base 13 gate push. Now, i just play T/P as I feel. |

I used Protoss at first, then switch to Terran coz I want to play as the human race vs other imba stuff in the universe.

| Im always enthralled by those with the skill to play all three races. Only one ever seemed the click with me, the zerg. Im just an antsy, psychotic kinda dude. I love 9-Pool speed just as much as 3 Hatch Spire. Ling micro is always an insane thrill and muta control is one the hardest to learn but most rewarding mechanics in the game. |

When I was but a wee noob playing 1v1 Challenger with my neighbor we both concluding that making as many gateways as possible and building only zealots was the best strategy. Now here I am.
(My first online games were as Terran for whatever reason and when I first found out about the pro scene I admired NaDa so I played Terran then.) |

| i just loved the protoss campaign more than the others. After i played toss in BW for a long time, it also carried over to sc2. That was probably a bad decision as P in sc2 doesnt fit my playstyle at all. Turtle all day and rely on good ff´s and positioning. In BW i really liked the way Protoss played out, especially agressive stuff like the +1 speedzeal push on Zergs third. But yeah, i picked toss for Zeratul, Tassadar, fenix and the other fellas. |

| I mostly played Protoss when I first got the game ... didn't play much after 2002, fast-forward to 2010 and the release of SC2, when I chose Zerg because it was supposed to be the most skill-demanding race and I wanted a challenge. It just made sense to keep playing as Zerg when I stopped playing SC2 and switched to BW. |

I use to play Protoss like when I first started playing because in China, Protoss = God Race, Terran = Man Race, Zerg = Insect Race. Insect have a very lowlife stigma attached to it.
But then as I played the campaign, the Terran race and Protoss race have a lot of civil war while Zerg race is pretty always under command of one sole entity so they are more harmonic. And thus I changed my race to Zerg because who knows if Acturus Mensk decided to ditch me or the void starts a revolution. |
