A Russian court's decision today to jail members of the punk rock protest band Pussy Riot is a bitter blow for freedom of expression in the country, Amnesty International said today.
Three members of the all-female group were convicted of “hooliganism on grounds of religious hatred” after they sang a protest song in Moscow’s main Orthodox cathedral in February.
The judge sentenced them to two years' imprisonment in a penal colony. The lawyers for the three said they were planning to appeal the decision.
German state secretary Guido Westerwelle critizised this decision harshly, expressing concerns about negative effects on civil liberty and development. Protestants The Russian ambassy in Berlin
Protesters in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin express their outrage, believing this Putin's injustice. EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton called the sentence "disproportionate".
Associated Press news agency said a number of protesters had been arrested outside the court before the sentencing was announced, including ex-world chess champion Garry Kasparov and opposition politician Sergei Udaltsov.
Oh yeah remember an interview they played here, they were making fun of putin from some garage and had their faces blurred out....Really sucks for them. It was pretty crude humour, but then doesnt really deserve two years o.0

Amnesty International has urged African nations to arrest former US President George W. Bush during his visit to the continent this month.
"International law requires that there be no safe haven for those responsible for torture; Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia must seize this opportunity to fulfill their obligations and end the impunity George W. Bush has so far enjoyed," senior legal advisor for Amnesty International, Matt Pollard said.
According to the international rights group, African nations have the obligation to bring Bush to justice for his role in war crimes, Reuters reported.
This is while Bush's stay in Africa is aimed at raising awareness of cervical and breast cancers, as well as HIV/AIDS.
Last month, the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal found Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair guilty of committing crimes against humanity during the Iraq war.
Earlier this year, Bush canceled a trip to Switzerland due to fears of being arrested over allegations of ordering the torture of prisoners held in overseas military bases.
President from 2001 to 2009, Bush authorized the use of waterboarding, as well as other interrogation techniques, considered to be torture by human rights groups.

Lol what the fuck? Song must have been pretty offensive in addition to the Russian system being nutty. While you won't be arrested for doing something similar in the US, you'd be on close watch by the FBI.
EDIT: I didn't realize they went into a church and one of the country's primary landmarks to hate on religion and their country's govt.
they had deliberately offended Russian Orthodox believers by storming the altar of Moscow's main cathedral in February to belt out a song deriding Putin.
Of course people were going to get really pissed at them... what were they thinking?

I guess Russia has put clever limits on what you can do. Stupidity should be punished, there is so much of it. And yes that band was stupid. Wtf did they expect, change the world?

Yeah, clearly they are in the wrong here. Nothing wrong with a de-facto dictator and oppressive ex-KGB member punishing a band harshly for artitiscal expression.

Well, they sure as hell showed a lack of respect by doing what they did. Two years of prison is of course insane, but I agree with them receiving some sort of punishment (a fine or something like that).

Don't judge anything by its cover. I dislike even thinking about this group of people since my dad laughing showed me photos of them putting frozen chickens into their... female organs? XD. It was a perfomance, they said.
They are completely nuts, but 2 years does seem too harsh.

Did they get charged for indecent exposure for that at the very least?

It would be fine for me to hate them and talk about how much I hate them in my own home. It would not however be fine if I was to go on a radio or some other sort of public broadcast with that hatred, but it probably wouldnt be illegal. But if I was to go to a Jewish temple and start declaring my hatred for the race then I would likely be jailed as well.
Whats worse is that they tried to do this is the main orthodox chapel in the nations capital.... Maybe they dont deserve 2 years but they def deserve something as this is well beyond freedom of speech and far into the realm of stupidity and religious hatred.

As far as my knowledge stretches that was "allegedly stuffed ..." rather than actual irrefutable proof that it was them. It seems as though it might just be vilification of the state by throwing shit at the accused.

Whats wrong is inciting religious hatred and hooliganism, all in the name helping their album sales. Not like anyone will start listening to reason. Time to devote all your time to pointing out whats wrong with another country to deflect attention from your own issues everyone. Rejoice!
