A Florida judge sided with a special needs teacher and said that the teacher allegedly used hot sauce to stop an autistic student from eating crayons, contrary to initial case which accused her of forcing the studient to eat them. The judge also recommended the school district reinstate the woman's job.
Lillian Gomez was fired from her job at Sunrise Elementary School in Kissimmee, Fla., in February after school officials found out that Gomez had allegedly put jumbo-sized Crayons in a cup and soaked them for days in hot sauce before moving them to a bag that was labeled with the student's name.
The school spent more than $50,000 in attorney's fees litigating the case, according to ABC News' Orlando affiliate WFTV. Gomez will not receive back pay and the ultimate decision of whether she will get her job back rests in the hands of the school board. Todd Cinetti, a parent of a student at the school, said he was astounded the judge recommended Gomez return to the classroom.
"That's ridiculous," he said. " Maybe she shouldn't work with children. Maybe she should find another career."
The former teacher's attorney, Thomas Egan, said his client was only trying to help her student. "I think she made a bad judgment in the way she went about it," he said. "But her purpose was good."
Gomez' case is not the first in hot sauce punishment. An Alaska mother of six was found guilty of child abuse for forcing her son to drink hot sauce and take cold showers on a taped segment of the "Dr. Phil" show. The woman, Jessica Beagley, was convicted of misdemeanor child abuse.
In 2009, a Miami teacher was convicted of abuse after she allowed a special needs student to drink a soda laced with hot sauce.

WFTV found out a judge has sided with an Osceola County teacher who is accused of using hot sauce to discipline an autistic student.
Lillian Gomez was fired earlier this year after district officials said she soaked Play-Doh and crayons in hot sauce and force-fed them to a student.
A document obtained by WFTV shows the school district spent $50,000 on lawyers fighting to keep Gomez out of the classroom.
Gomez has not been back to Sunrise Elementary since officials found out about the incident last October.
The teacher has been fighting to get her job back. WFTV was there in June when she took her case before a judge.
On Friday a judge issued an order recommending the district reinstate her job.
Parents WFTV talked to can't believe it.
"That's kind of ridiculous," said Todd Cinetti."Maybe she shouldn't work with children. Maybe she should find another career."
Gomez denies ever force-feeding the student and said she only used the hot sauce to prevent him from eating the crayons.
Officials said she first got jumbo-sized crayons, put them in a cup, then poured hot sauce over them and she later moved them to a bag and labeled it with the student's name, and let the crayons sit for days.
A judge found that while her behavior was inappropriate, the district didn't prove she was trying to punish the student.
Gomez's lawyer agrees.
"I think she made a bad judgment in the way she went about it but her purpose was good," said attorney Thomas Egan.
The judge ordered the teacher won't get any back pay, but the final decision about what happens is up to the school board.

Kid won't be chowing down on crayons any time soon, so I guess mission accomplished?
Not sure why she was fired in the first place. |

| She did something a bit in the grey area, but she was legitimately trying to help the kid. She wasn't forcing him to consume hot sauce, she was using it as a deterrent. |

| What are we debating here? Any special needs students registered on TL? I dont think public opinion means much otherwise, since this comes down to personal judgement. Is it better to chew on crayons or learn to not chew on them through a simple trick? |

You're not supposed to be eating crayons to being with, so she didn't trick him into eating it. The same tactic is used on dogs and babies. Put something that doesn't taste good on something they're not supposed to be eating, and then if they try and eat it, they're in for a surprise which will hopefully cause them to stop eating it.
Honestly, you act like hotsauce is the same as poison or a ghost pepper.
Now in the case of the mother FORCING her son to drink it, yeah that's definately wrong.Last edit: 2012-08-19 11:09:40 |

Was it really so hot that the child's tongue would have melted off or something? Because $50,000...
$50,000 over crayons and hot sauce. And people think the teacher made the bad judgement call here. |

| Frankly, I like the solution and don't think the hot sauce was any more harmful to the child than eating crayons was =\ Coddle culture. |

I think the teacher did the right thing lol.. if I had some crayons and suddenly hot sauce was on them I would be like wtf.. but not burning my mouth because I dont chew on them. She tried to help.. I think its a good choice of what she did but obviously not everyone agrees but she shouldnt be punished.
What should be punished is teachers ignoring everything rather than using weird things to try to help kids grow.Last edit: 2012-08-19 11:15:26 |

| The situation itself is not a huge deal here, but I dislike the principle that it's ok to teach by using pain. There's no need for professional teachers if this were true. Any idiot can use pain to condition a child not to do something. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I don't think this teacher did anything horrible, but she also wasn't doing her job. |

The kid died and the judge found the teacher guilty of reckless child endangerment ... Wait no, the kid probably doesn't eat crayons anymore, and all that healthy change for less than the price of a Del Taco meal.
She likely should stay fired for not obtaining parental consent beforehand. Any abnormal means to the end deserves communication in the Parent-Teacher-Child relationship, not the least of which includes special needs children. |

Nothing to debate = nothing to discuss. This is purely informational which doesnt deserve its own space outside of dedicated news portal imo |

| seems like no one knows how to treat special needs people these days. i have lived with a paranoid schitzophrenic for my entire life and we don't just allow her to do crazy shit when she does them...we discipline her like you would a normal child (she's 67, but with the mind of a kid, that's kind of what this condition does to you) and it works perfectly. it seems like the parents probably allow the kid to do whatever they want at the house, not the smartest teacher that would do something shady like this, but it's up to the parents/caretakers to discipline them well enough. it's an odd observation, but during my school years whenever one of the special ed kids would come up to me and my friends to talk to us, no one else really knew how to talk to them, tried to talk to them like they were some sort of animal inferior to us. it seems to me like not very many people really understand how to treat those with special needs and when it comes to parenting, when their child is young they let them roam free because they feel sorry for them. |

| i really hope the kids parents were consulted before any of this happened, i know personally i wouldnt like a teacher doing this to my son or daughter, even if they were austistic i would always try to fight the good fight and explain to them why eating crayons is bad or something this wacky. |

She couldve alternatively soaked it in something that tastes horrible, but she was probably just thinking of anything that would make the kid not want to eat crayons anymore and came to the judgement of hot sauce. No real harm is done and the kid might not eat crayons anymore, dont see the problem.

"fighting the good fight" doesnt always work. She probably told him to not eat the crayons and why, but that wont change anything.Last edit: 2012-08-19 11:26:26 |

| With no parental permission, the teacher can't just use any method to teach a child... If it was her own kid there would be no issue, but you aren't allowed to discipline other people's children with any method you see fit |
