i5-2500k ASRock Z77 Pro4-m HD 4850 8 GB DDR3 Corsair CX600 120 GB Agility 3 SSD Windows 7 64bit
Hello people. I built this computer about 2 months ago and have been having major problems since day 1. First thing was that my GPU at the time (560 Ti OC) could not play SC2.. I was getting extremely low frame rates on it. I tried various solutions, but none worked. It only had problems playing SC2 and nothing else, although I the only other game I play is D3. Anyway, I switched out to the 4850 and everything was fine for a few days.. until my computer started freezing/BSOD about once a day. To make matters worse, I think the constant freezing killed my 2 TB HDD because it is now inaccessible. I've been trying to get ways to recover my data on it, but that is another story. I am here right now to try to figure out what the hell is causing the freezing.
Ok so here's what I've done so far.
1. Software. I thought maybe since I tried installing/reinstalling so many different video drivers (first for my 560 Ti, then for the 4850), something here could have gone wrong and not installed/uninstalled properly. So I ran CCleaner and erased everything I could. Didn't help.
2. Ran memtest. No errors detected.
3. Switched PSU (Corsair CX430). Didn't help.
4. Secure erased and clean installed Windows on my SSD.
After reinstalling Windows, I started installing all the drivers and software I need, including SC2. Just moments ago.. my computer froze again! These past 2 months has given me so much headache, I don't know how much more I can take.
Can anyone give me any ideas what may be causing my computer to freeze? At this point I think it's either the SSD or the motherboard... How can I test what's causing the freezing? What additional info can I give you guys to help me? If you guys don't know the answers, can you point me to a place that might have answers? Maybe Windows' forums??? Like, what's a good tech site with an active community that can help me out?
Thanks for any ideas!

| I had a problem recently with my computer freezing all the time. The problem was actually my video card, it was starting to go. I know this can cause your computer to freeze, and sometimes not even load into windows, might not be the problem you're having but just throwing it out there. |

Usually it just freezes, but twice I got BSOD. The BSOD said something along the lines of "one or more of your hardware has malfunctioned. Please contact blah blah blah..." I didn't read too much into it, but that was the gist. And immediately after these two BSODs, Windows would fail to load. Both times, it ended being my HDD, which as I said is now inaccessible. I was able to "fix" my HDD the first time by putting it into my old computer.. somehow chkdsk was able to run upon loading windows and fix it. Now, windows would fail to load on that machine as well But anyway, different story.
So the reason I don't think it is my video card (which I could be wrong), is that it was running perfectly fine on my old machine which I built around the same time last year. I guess this could be an easy test since I just need to take out my video card. I'll probably try that sometime this coming week..
Edit: I just realized I never updated the BIOS on my motherboard, mainly because I didn't want to mess anything up.. If I were to do it (from this page: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro4-M/?cat=Download&o=BIOS ), I should download the Windows option for 1.3 right? I just want to make sure to not mess anything up in case I need to RMA it..Last edit: 2012-08-20 16:57:42 |
