Well, they made KeSPA to announce their participation for Season 5, which was the big fear for everyone: that KeSPA just keep using this to stall and gain control. Even if the follow up was a typo no one really trusted them to show up for season 5. Now they put their word on it, I think we can believe it for now. Because it will be a much bigger problem for KeSPA if they actually go against their own word which is clear defined and can be verified.
So in other words, this thread is greatly fueled by Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. GOM: KeSPA won't join season 4. Such dicks. KESPA ARE DICKS! For some reason you're giving KeSPA the benefit of the doubt. I'm not sure what they've done to deserve that sort of treatment from anyone, but we have a right to be suspicious. Them precluding players from the GSL hurts everyone (including the players) except for KeSPA, which is pretty much par for the course for them. They need to realize that they are not invincible like in BW, and that their players are not the best players out there (yet). A little humility would be nice.
Were you around when the GOM classic was cancelled? Players *were* overworked. Players were still overworked even without GOM classic, leading to changes on PL, OSL and MSL schedules. There is a reason why Flash was called "Child Labor Terran" and Jaedong Oz became a meme.
I give KeSPA the benefit of the doubt because I truly believe the best thing for eSports is to develop without interference of the game developers, avoiding a conflict of interest between providing the best competition and selling the most profitable game.
Up to this point, KeSPA is the only entity that has managed to do so in a prolonged, sustainable way. It's not perfect, but sure is a more solid foundation to build on than the current Starcraft II scene. Players like Flash wouldn't get the top-class treatment he got. Jaedong, Sea and Baby would be jobless and scraping to get by after WeMade and Hwaseung left. Violet would not get the same treatment for leukemia while still being a registered progamer with a contract. It is true that not everybody gets the same treatment and benefits, but its something *possible* with hard work and dedication, while *impossible* anywhere else.
I do have a problem with people acting as if eSports started with Blizzard blessing the masses with Starcraft II. People here need to realize that KeSPA is entitled to do whatever is better for the business they have developed for all these years. The prestige of PL, OSL and its players were not developed overnight, and it is their right to protect it while expanding to new markets with a well-planned strategy (see MGL negotiations.) The "huge" international scene this forum and reddit gloat so much about still doesn't have a sustainable model because people is not willing to put their money where their mouth is. Why should KeSPA be obligated to operate the same way? It's like going back to the days of 4U, POS snd G.O., except with a lot of makeup and under the dictatorship of Blizzard.

Over worked?? how many hours did they play??
Over here in Canada, we have 40 hour work weeks. Work. They are playing a video game. If i added up my work and video games during the week, i would have close to 70 to 80 hours.
They are playing a video game. Not drilling for oil. Not underwater welding, crab fishing. Those guys work 12 hour days 7 days a week, and a chance to die every day. Video games. I can't stress that enough |

| And AGAIN, the overworking business is completely irrelevant when the players themselves have been saying that they want to play in the GSL! They were completely prepared for, and looking forward to, playing in another tourney. KeSPA is contradicting them and claiming they are 'too busy' or 'unprepared' in their place. It is blatant lies and secrecy, and thus most likely an attempt to screw GOM over. The ESF won't just ignore that and help give their competitors revenue. Last edit: 2012-08-25 05:13:08 |

Correct. Just cause they had the rights which were granted to them by Blizzard doesn't mean it gives them the power to fine other leagues, thats up to blizzard since its their property. |

"GOMTV's involvement in eSports began during the StarCraft: Brood War era, when it created the GOMTV Classic invitational tournament. Nowadays, GOMTV organises the only major leagues held in South Korea, the GOMTV Global Starcraft II League and the GOMTV Global Starcraft II Team League. Indeed, on May 26th 2010, Blizzard Entertainment and Gretech Corporation signed a partnership agreement giving GOMTV exclusive rights to broadcast e-Sports matches of Blizzard games for the next three years. Other channels would still be able to get broadcasting rights after having negotiated with GOMTV, however." - GOMTVLast edit: 2012-08-25 05:30:31 |

nah man, you don't understand... kespa obviously knows that the schedules are just too damned full... 14 hour flights? ezpz gsl players, kespa players? unpossible. dur. I think we have the solution.
GSL players are doping with the help of GomTV, while kespa is obviously legit. dur.. |

Your description fits well with the members who reads statements and post instant reactions. My version:
GOM: KeSPA won't join season 4. Such dicks. Me: I'm glad this is getting some attention, the Kespa monopoly threatens eSF's and all non-Kespa leagues existence. KeSPA: season 4 is a no go, our schedule is planned for this season. Me: Yeah right, PR talk while stifling the competition. KeSPA: but we are joining season 5. Me: -_- doesn't change the long term issue.
Hopefully attention is brought to the real issue. Gom made this press release to trigger an outcry, yes, but the topic is certainly not fueled by doubt or uncertainty. Kespa will push all Korean competitors out of the market unless the status quo is changed, that's just sound business logic. |

On the surface you have a point, but try to actually become a progamer and you`d quickly realize it's no joke. With 11-14H of mandatory practice a day and very little free time, it's no wonder why some people see it as child labor.
Also there's ton of white collar jobs such as bureaucrats, cashiers, programmers, bankers etc that don't really get that physical compared to a video game.

| Playing starcraft is much more exhausting than other games. You can easily grind diablo 3 for hours and hours, but after a few matches of starcraft I need a break. I can't play continuously for hours without getting exhausted. It's a game which requires a lot of focus and thinking, much more than most other games. So playing starcraft for 12 hours a day is definitely pretty intense, much more so than your average job at the office. |

Frankly, it should be none of KeSPA's business. It should be up to the players, period. Now, if KeSPA served as a voice for players who are feeling abused or overworked, then that would be great. They could help those players with their situations. But for them to prevent players from competing when they want to compete is wrong. Not allowing its players to freely make up their own minds when it comes to joining tournaments that they are supposed to be working with, well, it makes them sound much more like a North Korean organization rather than one from the South.
I only hope that KeSPA suffers as much economic damage as they do embarressment. If they don't come around and begin to seriously work with other Leagues then they are going to just continue to work towards shutting the rest out and let the fans suffer. Better that it gets resolved now. I hope it does. I enjoy watching Starcraft 2 too much to wish otherwise, but the arrogance of an electronic sports league prohibiting its members from participating in tourneys that they are supposed to be participating in is galling. I don't understand how anyone can defend KeSPA's actions or the ethical gymnastics required to rationalize it. |

KeSPA: season 4 is a no go, our schedule is planned for this season. FUCK KESPA! KeSPA: but we are joining season 5. OMG WE DID IT *pats in the back* Can't you see what's wrong with all this?
Sure they have built up their status for many years but there is no reason for them to take a dump on GOM and their own players.Last edit: 2012-08-25 17:45:17 |
