Korean forums were required by law to use real name registration based on social security number. This has been ruled unconstitutional. As somebody who believes in anonymous Internet use, I consider this great news.
Another advantage for us is that now registering on Korean websites will probably become easier, since there is no more need to obtain a Korean social security number.
The Constitutional Court ruled Thursday that a law requiring South Koreans to use their real names on Internet forums was unconstitutional, forcing the government to change the five-year-old regulation created to reduce anonymous criticism of politicians and celebrities.

| I might be a minority in this, but I think one way to combat internet abuses and trolls is to use real identity. It may be revealed outright or may be available only to administrators. Either way, I believe it will deter much of what is bad about internet forums. |

So basically Jessica can't file a lawsuit against anyone who shittalks her or slayers anymore simply because things start to become anonymous in the korean internet now?^^
While I think it's right that you shouldnt be required to give social security number and real name when you register on forums and boards it's kinda also disadvantagous considering how "crazy" korean netizens especially haters can be and even go as far as rdemand suicide from certain celebrities. |

To be fair she recently got all over FXOBosS' case for a tweet that was lost in translation and the post you quoted doesn't seem all that ridiculous.. more like a light hearted joke.
This sounds like good news to me but I know very little of Korean culture except that the law existed and kind of why.Last edit: 2012-08-24 01:18:34 |

I don't think we should track everyone's postings to combat trolling. Just grow thicker skin. |

| Im not sure i favor anonymity on the internet purely because it contributes to people being jackasses for no reason beyond because they can. People are a lot less likely to do so if there name is attatched to it. |

Yeah, I know the one you mean, and there's a never ending string of amusing/scary Jessica stories, which are interesting/entertaining in their own right, but they seem to overflow into everywhere. I suppose I came across as more annoyed then I really am by the comment Last edit: 2012-08-24 01:21:04 |

The problem is that you are curtailing the rights of a lot of completely innocent people just to deal with a few idiots. |

It also contributes to people standing up on things they otherwise wouldn't because they don't want everyone to know they oppose some topics. (ie: gay marriage, racism, etc...) I'm not saying it'd be a bad thing to get rid of trolls, but you also get people to speak up for things they wouldn't if people they know could find out he said that. |

if they're ashamed of their opinion to the point they can't accept they're in a minority/against a trend/seen as conservatives/leftist they should either re consider their opinion or stfu in democracies. |

I'd assume in case of a lawsuit you can still go to the ISP and ask them to resolve that to a user. At least assuming no good proxy, such as TOR, was used. But users who are that careful would have managed to work around the earlier restrictions too.
So I think this mainly improves the situation for the average user, while it doesn't make tracking down serious criminals harder than it already is.Last edit: 2012-08-24 01:29:35 |
