My internet was acting weird yesterday (random drops to almost 0 bandwidth avalible, skype calls, games lagging out but not disconnecting completely, but it seems completely dead right now.
Im speedtesting @ about 4.4mbit download 45 ping (when the site loads) but if i pull up a bunch of bookmarks in firefox, they all stick at "Connecting", many fail, even teamliquid, google, will fail like half the time i open a page or search, but not the rest of the time.
Monitoring my bandwidth usage, it is at no more than 20-50kb/sec during these times, when everything is stuck on loading, but it doesnt seem to be a DNS issue (atleast as far as i can tell), i cant hold a skype call etc.
Download rate graph looks like this, and is reflected pretty strongly in any bandwidth monitoring - ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/TpJlW.png)
![[image loading]](http://www.pingtest.net/result/68600785.png)
If i open www.speedtest.net, 50/50 chance of failure, in the 50 that it works, it would take 20 seconds to load the site.
Ive had about 7mbit down, 0.7 up very consistently without major problems for a couple years now, reports of 4.5mbit down and 50 ping are not too bad at all, i wouldnt complain, but i clearly dont have that. It takes 5-10 seconds for a response in gw2 or diablo. Packet loss testing doesnt seem to be working anywhere.
I turned everything off and on again (router, pc, etc) and everything is exactly how it has been for a long time without issues.
Nothing is using my network, i have, ~3kb/sec of traffic as of writing, it is a secured network and i am the only person connected right now. (via ethernet cable)
Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Thanks for any help (: It seems to be recovering slowly but i havnt been able to do anything for easily 90 minutes now and it is still not working anywhere near correctly.Last edit: 2012-08-28 07:25:00 |

| Sounds like you're bandwidth is being capped. It happened to me back when I had a service known as Clear (Clearwire). Also if you're using a router, it may be dying on you and you may end up having to get a new one. |

| Its an uncapped line, has been for years. Ive hit like 300+GB downloaded in a month due to streams (and that wasnt uncommon with mlg streamer bug maxing my net), but id be suprised if i had 50 this month or last, or at all recently i guess. It seems weird to suddenly have an issue. Last edit: 2012-08-28 07:36:42 |

I think PP is suggesting that the problem is with whatever stuff connects your home/flat's central router (there is just one central one that connects to the internet, right?) to the rest of the world. In the states, you get a cable modem that connects to the same outlet as cable TV. Before the ones and zeroes leave your house, the cable modem transforms them from ones and zeros sent over ethernet into ... something else ... that's sent over coaxial cable or whatever the cable companies use in between. But there are weird physics/electrical engineering things that happen when you do that and if something happens to the cable line it can cause problems.
Does it happen from all computers/devices in your house? Can you rule out that the issue is computer specific?
Is BT your internet provider? This might actually be a "call your ISP" situation. Yes the first thing they'll ask you to do is unplug and re-plug in everything, but my guess is that they're going to actually have to service some box or wire between your house and the nearest telphone pole, or the nearest telephone pole and ... well in the states there are these 2 metre x 1 metre x 1 metre or so boxes every few city blocks where all the telco stuff lives.

Cable internet is internet that is connected via cable.
As opposed to fiber optics/phone like dialup and FTTH or FTTN and DSL.
Cable internet uses sound to transmit data.Last edit: 2012-08-28 10:30:38 |

| I randomly have a similar issue. Over the last 15 minutes I have had nine separate events of more than ten seconds of no internet, then things go fine (makes gaming unplayable). This has been happening every now and again for like the last couple of months. Every time I call the ISP they just look at it when things are fine and say its a problem on our end. Signal strength is good and there is only 1 other wireless signal in our range. |

Pretty much all internet here is DSL. (scotland)
I tried several PC's with same problem, but it just randomly fixed itself after several hours. Not good if it happens in the middle of raid time or something, thoughLast edit: 2012-08-28 14:45:45 |

DSL uses sound to transmit data as well (that's why you have to install filters between your telephones and the wall jacks, so if it happens again, I think calling the ISP is the thing to do. |

You can try to just call the ISP. If you don't want to do that (or they can't help you), try the following next time it happens.
Make a traceroute to google, and possibly a ping. If you don't know how to do that: Under windows, click "start / run" and type cmd, then "run".
In the box, enter "traceroute 8.8.8.8" and paste the result here. Then make a ping: "ping 8.8.8.8 -t". If it is timing out, cancel it and say so here (to cancel, press ctrl and "c" at the same time). If you get a reply, let it run for about 50 to 100 packets, then copy the output here. Then we can look again where exactly the problem is.
What other info would be helpful: Your LAN setup, the bandwidth your internet connection offers, type of router you are using, Operating System. Also at what daytimes does the problem appear? |
