While I don't think SK is the best off-lane solo, I don't know what you'd use as alternatives.
As a solo off-laner, you're generally trying to either a) get XP/lasthits from the lane while under harassment from 1 or more supports, and b) trying to survive kill attempts. At levels 1-4 (where Sand King's survivability is most questionable--once you've got 3rd or 4th rank Burrowstrike, it's range is much more suitable for staying alive), the effectiveness of the Stout Shield damage block for both of these purposes is unmatched. Stout block definitely outperforms gauntlets with regard to staying alive in 1v2/1v3 scenarios.
I could see you maybe starting with 4 branches + more consumables, but that'd make you significantly easier to kill, if harder to outright harass out of lane. |

| I tended to start 2 branches 1 salve 1 tango 3 clarities every time i played sand king offlane. Worked for me.. i just never needed stout when a tap of w can block around 100 damage from projectiles anyway. |

I mean, that's assuming that the lane isn't sentried from level 1.Last edit: 2012-09-13 08:08:27 |

| Glad to see nigma's dota2 guide, I think it's probably the best video I've seen to help explain to people what dota is who have no clue about the game. |

Like i said, i've never had any issues starting that way. but i'm also pretty decent of an SK. |

I was considering getting into DotA; though my only extended MOBA experience is with League of Legends <_< Watching a lot of the videos and doing some reading, DotA seems a lot more difficult, but also much more deep then LoL, which I have begun to grow bored of. So I was wondering where I can find people to play with, oh, and if anyone wants to trade 3 keys for an invite; I still need one.Last edit: 2012-09-17 10:47:13 |

| Just added links to the various miniguides Yango posted over the last few months & a imo pretty cool "tierlist" for starting heroes. That should remove one of the most frequently asked questions. |

| This is a nice little library of Dota 2 stuff here. I've just started playing and this thread has definitely been of some help to me. |

| Added the "Intended Fix List" and "Common Bugs List" to the OP. Next on my list is cleaning up the "learning dota 2"-thread in the League forum and linking it to get rid of the guys who pop into GD with "HAI I PLAYED LEAGUE WHAT U SUGGEST FOR ME?!", happens way too often for my taste. T_T |

nice compilation.
I was actually quite surprised that "Welcome to dota, you suck" by Purge was not included since this is one of the most common referenced guides to proper mindset for beginners. It also explains why a lot of common misconceptions like rushing vlads is not as effective to the overall match as it may seem.

Of course playdota.com is also an excellent reference for everything dota.

The thing is, for someone who hasn't played either DotA 1 or DotA 2, having to learn what everything looks like in DotA 1 is a pretty immense barrier for comparatively minimal gain when you're starting out. |
