LoL bashing will result in bans. Implenia Austria. September 06 2012 10:42. Posts 1972 | Profile # |
Topic
As some of you probably have heard iNcontrol stated that Riot (Subsidary of Tencent and Producer of League of Legends) was looking into forcing teams to drop support for their sub-teams that play "MOBA"-Style games (eg. Dota, Hon, BLC, etc.).
This statement was quickly refuted and called a "rumor" by Riots VP of Controlling Tournamentsof eSports:
I probably shouldn't respond to your question on this thread and get off topic, but just to set the record straight, Riot WILL NOT be forcing teams (i.e. CLG, EG) to be exclusive to League of Legends.
I'm not sure where this rumor started, but that's exactly what it is, a rumor.

Sir Scoots of EG just stated on Lo3-Show (5 September) that Riot was in fact talking to them and hoping that EG would pick up a LoL team. In order to do so however they would have had to drop support for their current Dota 2 squad. Below is a link to the show (full transcrip here):
Summary from Reddit User VladislavHoodinski: Sir Scoots just finished saying that all the top managers from gaming organizations (col, eg, dignitas) were complaining to riot because this rule WAS in place and now apparently it's been changed. Immediately after, slasher confirmed that he heard the same from other places Vod with time stamp: http://www.twitch.tv/onemoregametv/b/331199144?t=108m00s you might have to refresh the page to get sound
Rileno from complexity confirmed Sir Scoots statement:
Unfortunately this is true. JBass and myself were having a conversation about it this morning, and our management ultimately decided against it long ago. I'm glad EG, coL, and Dignitas worked hard against it, competition is good. Source
Odee from Dignitas
@Slasher why do you keep mentioning us? As I told you yesterday we heard a rumour also asked RIOT and they said to us we can get other MOBAs
Source
Slasher clarifies:
ODEE is only talking about the context of my personal tweet, not of what has happened in the last day and a half. To clarify for everyone:
Scoots not did 'confirm' anything about Dignitas on Live On Three, that was me, he may have said it first because I talked with him during the pre-show. What I confirmed was something you already knew by Tuesday afternoon/Wednesday - that Dignitas COULD pick up a Dota team if they wanted to. That was the first time Riot told a team they could use other games beyond their statement. Digntias simply did not ask Riot previously before that if they could acquire a dota/moba team or not, mostly ODEE just being busy, and he can attest to both of these things. So because Dignitas never asked, they were never told they couldn't. I should have made this more clear.
Complexity and EG did ask regarding acquiring League of Legends teams, EG with dota2 and Complexity with both Dota2 and Hon, and then were given this answer. My original tweet included ire towards Riot for saying it was a misunderstanding between the teams (http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=29022381#post29022381). I includes Dignitas along with EG and Complexity, which is admittedly wrong in this context. Sorry about that.
I was attempting to reach comment from Riot and Valve before releasing this story as a whole, but there's some of it.
Source
New statement by Odee:
Just wanted to clarify SirScoots didnt tell me this information when we chatted in Seattle we both had it from multiple sources. My tweet last night meant to say that but on twitter its hard to do in 140 characters.
If this was a RIOT policy at one point and then they changed their policy to non exclusivity for whatever reason, well good because I am glad that they did.
But I really do not get what all the fuss is about, that's it over now as far as I am concerned. Posting here as I am banned still on Reddit
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=366477¤tpage=32#624
TL,DR: iNcontrol says that Riot wants to force teams to drop support for Dota. Riot calls it a false rumor. EG, coL and Slasher confirm what iNcontrol has said. Nothing new from Riot yet.
Discussion
Some people say that while this is a legitimate business move even though maybe not in the best interest of the esport scene as a whole. Some people say decisions are horrible and unethical.
My question is: Should we be worried as a community? If yes what can we do? If no, why not?
Please keep the discussion civil. THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE GAME. THIS IS ABOUT RIOT THE COMPANY BEHIND IT.

Riot denied this.
From the LoL GD thread:

Riot's now saying that rule wasn't true and that it was just a rumor. SirScoots and Slasher both claim it was a "behind the scenes" rule that teams who had LoL or DotA teams knew about.
Regardless, it isn't going to happen but apparently Complexity wants to get a LoL team again and EG is interested in picking up a LoL team.
It would cost them too much revenue and there's no source to back it up.
Many LoL teams have DotA teams, like CLG and Dignitas, so Riot would be committing financial suicide.Last edit: 2012-09-06 10:45:40 |

Which means very little since Complexity, EG and Dignitas have no real reason to make this shit up, while Riot has every reason in the world to deny this after it gets out. |

And then multiple team managers confirmed this. One of the two makes more sense to be telling the truth. |

So are you saying the team managers are lying then? Keep in mind that riot didn't actually deny it - they just stated that it wouldn't be a rule going forward and that it was a rumor, not that it was never in (serious) discussion. |

I updated the link for SirScoots statement with timestamp:

Looks like linking vods with timestamp still doesn't work properly. Time is at 1h 48 min. The exclusivity was in place until yesterday.Last edit: 2012-09-06 10:54:31 |

I'm saying that there may have been a miscommunication.
Riot is SO profit focused at the moment that they will never risk both many of their top teams dropping from both America and Europe, and the terrible PR this would bring.
So either someone messed up somewhere, or Riot's management is suicidal. |

The OP is not completely clear:

Does that mean EG would not be able to support two "MOBA" teams, or that Riot required them to drop the DotA 2 squad? If the latter, how would they enforce it, by prohibiting the team from playing in tournaments they sponsor? Talk about a shot in the foot... |

Yeah, that is the part that baffles me. It is easy to say that it was simply not true. Well, if that is the case, it is suggesting they be lying. Which is quite a stance to take. |

Not really financial suicide immediately so much so as PR suicide. Riot has fucked up in that regard before, this wouldn't be the first time. |

Which is right, but what worries me is the idea of them actually considering it. It just goes along with their previous mindsets (like exclusivity contract with mlg) and it honestly disgusts me. The thing is, they are going with being exclusive, and they are doing it to such an extent that they are excluding themselves from the rest of the E-sports community. |

This why I made this thread. What can we do to make sure that riot wont succeed? Can we actually do something? Or just hope for the best? |
