I was at Techcrunch Disrupt in SF this week and got to see a whole slew of exciting startups that are looking to challenge the world. One that particularly interested me was a startup called Maluuba.
They're hosting an AMA on reddit right now: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/zvwrp/android_app_takes_siri_to_a_whole_new_level/ and there is also a techcrunch article and video showing what they're aiming for at the source link.
What excites me is that they've started right away that they are not just aiming to hit smartphones, and are planning to integrate with TV's and cars as soon as possible. Personally I would love to be able to talk to my home to find out things like weather, traffic, and what sort of events are going on without flicking on the news. There have been a lot of Siri clones over the past year, but Maluuba seems to be the first real competitor. What do you guys think, is this going to be the next big thing?
Maluuba can be downloaded at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maluuba.androidLast edit: 2012-09-15 05:00:42 |

Hi EcstatiC!
Could you elaborate on what you mean by Huxley-esque? If you have any privacy concerns one of our Android Developers wrote a great post on why we require so many permissions; if that's what you are refering to.Last edit: 2012-09-15 04:14:53 |

| I actually played with this App for a good hour testing various queries (and trying to stump it) and it was surprisingly good at figuring out what I wanted. I managed to defeat it by asking "Give me the weather in Celsius", which made it think 'Celsius' was a city. Other than that, this is some pretty cool technology and definitely worth checking out if you've got an Android. |

| Yea, they launched to the playstore during the techcrunch event and I tried out a lot of queries and almost all of them worked perfectly. I've been using it since for reminders and calendar events which really perked my interest for the integration into areas beyond mobile phones. It's also been awesome for finding new restaurants in my area. |

I'm really glad there is such a positive response! If you guys have any comments, bugs, or suggestions feel free to post them here or on the Reddit AMA!
I'll be checking back her periodically to address any posts.
@TheOne002: Nice work! Every time someone breaks it we can make it better. Keep on trying!

I'll have to try this now upon seeing all these positive endorsements. I don't use my phone very often but maybe I'll find some use for it.
Also is Coltin the developer? Cool to see someone like that on TL. |

Probably because you asked for weather instead of the temperature? |

The current app on the playstore is about 4 weeks old, though the underlying technologies server side are much more mature The reason his query didn't work, is because we don't support switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit by voice at this time. We do by touch (Tap on ANY temperature or distances and we'll change your metric/imperial settings everywhere). Feel free to ask me anything and I'll try my best to answer! EDIT: Also I'm on TeamLiquid because I love Starcraft! I'm not very good, but I don't have much time to play because I'm working all the time. #SecretlyDreamsOfGoingPro

No, it's a stronger result than google because it will give you more exact information. If Wolfram Alpha can't figure out what you wanted, then you can click the google button to do a google search on it.
Alternatively, you can do "Do a google search for Who is barack obama",
But it's clearly better just to do "Who is barack obama" and look at the wolfram alpha results, rather than "who is barack obama" going to google. |

Just tried this out, and using google as a verb actually does always get google search results(same with bing, youtube, etc). Also just asking "how do you bake an apple pie" goes to epicurious which is a recipe site. Hope you get your phone fixed or get a new one soon, the app has been really awesome so far in my use. |

We've done everything we can do to reduce requirements of permissions. For example we no longer "requires services that cost you money" because we dial numbers, we don't do the call. One of the other Android developers already wrote a post with a lot of details:
