You don't need to spam to participate.
Let's say you make 1 post per day, which would be a normal TL visitor. SC2 got really hyped up and famous at around 1 year after the release. It's been 2 years and a half since SC2 came out, so you would have ~600 posts with the 1post/day average.
Oh my god ... now someone wants to tell me what is normal or isn't ...alright!

Such a great way to celebrate TL's birthday! I hope I can get in on the Beta I'm sure that there are a bunch of people trying to get in on it but maybe I'll get lucky

Somehow I foresee the number of short posts without much content to them going way up until this contest ends as people try to get to 500 posts. Although I suppose the mods would be pretty quick to pick up on people just spamming posts to try and get to the 500 count.

I've already seen several posters trying to increase their post count with "fluff" posts on many threads. I'm not sure whether or not I should report them. There's no way the TL mods didn't foresee this though :/

It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, into the most terrible and disastrous of all wars, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance. But the right is more precious than peace.

I think this could justify hanging out in some live report threads. It probably would have been best to require 500 posts before the contest opened. This will definitely create a surge in posts, but I see most of them being useless, kind of like this one. :D
