+ Show Spoiler [original intro, rules, etc.] +It's been the better part of a year since TL Chess Matches 4 and 5 died a premature death. Perhaps sixth time will be the charm. Summary You all know what chess is, so I don't need to explain that. If you've never tried correspondence chess ( i.e. taking several days per move), I urge you to give it a shot: it can be surprisingly fun. Check out the previous TL chess matches if you want to get an idea of what it's like. Match Details and How to Join I'm not a good enough chess player to take on all of TL on my own, but I don't mind coordinating the match, so this will be a team vs. team game. If you're interested in playing, simply post in this thread to sign up and I'll randomly assign you to a team. Game begins if and when each team has at least 10 players. You can join the game at any time. To ensure privacy for the discussions of each team, I'll create a QuickTopic forum for each team and PM its URL to the members of that team, as a starting point. What you do from there is up to you. Of course, you're not precluded from posting comments in this thread, if you like. Procedure and Rules + Show Spoiler [Inactive Team Members] +You are considered "inactive" if you have joined a team but have not voted in your team's last three moves or specifically request observer/inactive status. This has ramifications for playing a move early (see Time Control and Extensions) and for votes cast in advance (see Voting/advanced voting options) + Show Spoiler [Time Control and Extensions] +3 days per move. A move will be officially played at the end of 3 days OR if at least half of the active team members have voted for the same move, provided that there are at least 5 votes for the move. If a team moves early, it can spend the unused time later on in the form of an extension. Extensions are taken 24 hours at a time. + Show Spoiler [Voting] +Vote for a move and/or to offer a draw, resign, or take an extension by posting in this thread or sending me a PM. You can change your vote as often as you like (until the deadline) by posting again: only the latest vote will be counted. Please don't change your vote simply by editing the original post, as your edit may easily be overlooked. Even if you vote to take an extension or resign, you can still cast a vote for a move, in case the extension/resignation does not pass the vote. (If you vote to offer a draw, you should certainly vote for a move, as a draw offer must be made along with a move.) If several moves are tied for first place at the deadline, the winner will be the last of the tied moves to hold an outright lead in the vote. + Show Spoiler [advanced voting options] +You can be as fancy as you like with your vote, as long as the vote itself is unambiguous. Thus, e.g., you could say, "I vote for 1. e4, unless it's trailing by over 5 votes with half an hour to go, in which case I switch my vote to 1. d4." I'm kind of hoping that people won't go hog-wild with conditionals, but if you want to, you can.
Likewise, you can vote for a move in advance; e.g., "If 1. d4, I vote for 1...d5". Again, I'm hoping that people won't abuse this option, but it's there if you need it (e.g. if you won't be around for a few days, but you want to vote for the next move). Note that an advance vote is not "postdated" for purposes of considering you active, and the vote of an inactive player will not be counted. + Show Spoiler [Outside Assistance] +As in the previous games: consulting opening books, endgame tablebases, and friends are allowed; computer analysis is not. To be sure, it's not possible to enforce this rule to any great extent, but in the absence of prizes, cheating isn't much fun for either side, so hopefully everyone will play by the rules. TL; DR: 3 days/move; no computer analysisTo sign up for the game or give feedback about the rules or anything else, post in this thread.

| He was pretty angry when he left last time. I'd play, but I don't have the time I had last time. I'll be reading and posting from time to time though! |

| I'll play, hoping for a St. George's defence that lead to the infamous draw on chessgames. |

| I'll play, hopefully I can learn since I'm not very good. |
| | Even during difficult times, when I sat down to play the game, there were times where it felt like god has descended down and played [for me]. |

| Could I follow as a spectator? I'm awful at chess and don't want to influence voting or slow a game down because its harder to reach a majority, but I'd love to follow one of the teams' thought process. |

On October 04 2012 07:32 LazyFailKid wrote: No idea how this works It's fairly straightforward: when it's your team's turn to move, you vote for the move you want to play. The move with the most votes gets played. We can talk about what the tie-breaking procedure should be. |

I can't promise I won't forget about this halfway through, 3 days per turn sounds so long, and I'm bad at remembering things..
But I'd like to try dis. /in
Also, what happens when people fail to vote? Move with highest votes wins? |

I'd be interested in joining a team as on observer aswell, if that's possible. Definately not a good enough player to contribute, but I'd really like to learn from a team's thought process! |
