Chris Roberts, producer behind many of the great space sims that has graced our screens, has a new game in the works. Entitled Space Citizen, he is going back to his Wing Commander roots, while throwing in some flavor from Freelancer and other privateer style titles.
Update:

we've passed $1.95 million and should reach the $2 million goal in nine hours or so
you can now upgrade your pledge at the rsi website (click on "you account" at the top)
there are more pledge tiers added, and more benefits for the higher tiers
members from the rsi team (including chris himself) frequently answer questions in the rsi general forum and in the comments section of the star citizen kickstarter.
The game and universe is called Star Citizen. Squadron 42 is the campaign mode. Very confusing.
Details: CryEngine 3 Singleplayer, Offline Co-Op, Online Modes (Akin to 'Demon's Souls') Connect with a huge community online and on the web, sounds kinda similar to an MMO User-generated content is a key feature Due out at some point in 2014, Alpha Testing next year Mash up of Freelancer, Privateer and Wing Commander Political drama inspired by the decline and fall of the Roman Empire Your goal is to get into Squadron 42, kind of like Space Foreign Legion Encourages random exploration of the universe, huge uncharted sections for the taking Seems to be Buy to Play, ala Guild Wars 2, once you buy the game, you can play for free online forever.
Some quick questions:
Quote: Can I have a medium-sized ship with a single launchable fighter aboard? Yes. Can I get out of my ship and shoot people in first- or third-person combat? Yes. Can I hijack an enemy ship? Yes. Can other players hijack my ship? Yes. Will there be location-specific damage on spaceships? Yes. Will there be customizable weapons on hardpoints? Yes. Can I play with a mouse? Yes. A gamepad? Yes. A joystick? Yes. Will it support Oculus Rift? Yes. Will it take user-created content (ships, etc) and sell it, splitting revenue with creators? Yes.

It looks very good. I like that the developer already started the project to show exactly what he wants to put out there. This gives potencial backers something to judge if it deserves their hard earned money.

You can definitely tell the ships are wing commander inspired though. The carrier looks like a modern carrier out of wing commander, hell it looks like the Midway out of prophecy with extra engines thrown on, and the fighters look a lot like rapiers. Also the flight deck runs straight through the middle of the thing, which is something I've always thought of as distinctly wing commander. Ditto for the enemy fighters, they're sleeker looking dralthis.

This is so much more than just wingcommander reborn. This is a chance to make the best space game ever. It has potential to become bigger than EvE in scale and scope, in terms of what you can do with other players. Imagine commanding a carrier in the role of a traditional fleet commander from EvE and sending all your little fighters out, only this time they are flown by players. Ermagherd!
I haven't been this hyped since WoW was announced.

Wing Commander Privateer-inspired gameplay with Demon's Souls style multiplayer and a setting with parallels to Roman history? These people know how to press a lot of my buttons.

Awesome. Just awesome. If you can please throw money behind this. This is one of those projects the big guys would never touch simply because no ones done it in awhile. If you ever wanted to see what it's like to be in an epic space battle this is the kind of game that can create that.

Wing commander is one of my most, if not the most, favorite franchises of all time. I usually don't get why people would donate to these kickstarter/ crowdfunded things, but this I have already donated. I'm super excited about this.

(aside from those $40-60 amounts where you get a copy of the game, of course)
im really excited about this too but donating a couple hundred dollars, yea no, i dont think so.
Check out Project Eternity. Up to ~250 the rewards scale pretty nicely. After that there are things that only certain people care about.
As for this, I don't really care. I want tight mission bound space flyers, the recent Wing Commander Saga was nice.

Even if there are people who are worried about losing money. There is a statement on the main page towards the bottom. Listed under the "What if you don't get enough money?" Section.
"We are encouraged by the overwhelming response to our "underground" launch site with over 20,000 registered users that we will reach, and hopefully exceed our minimum goal. We also believe that the response to our crowd funding campaign will cause certain fans and investors to step up with additional funding. Nonetheless, we are offering you the option to have your money refunded (less processing fees), should we really not reach our minimum goal. Or you may leave it in so that we can use it for additional fund raising or to continue working on the game at a reduced level."
But I have hope that this will be released.

you get wing commander, and you get privateer, all on one online game. what's not to like?
like a lot of people, i'm waiting for the ship specs to come out before sending money, but $30-60 at least is certainly going their way. a game like this would be worth it; i loved wing commander and privateer. hopefully there are enough wing commander / privateer / freelancer fans out there to pledge and make this a reality.
Unlike Project Eternity (Obsidian), the game that Squadron 42 has to beat is not only 10 years old but also one of the best games of all time. Not just that, but they continue to update said game even to this day.
The game needs beam cannons or Freespace 2 SCP is going to wipe the floor with it.
