TOKYO--BUSINESS WIRE--NEXON Co., Ltd. (3659.TO) (“Nexon”), a worldwide leader in free-to-play online games, today announced an agreement with Valve Corporation, a leading entertainment software and technology company based in the United States, to publish Dota 2 in Korea and Japan.

Dota 2, developed by Valve with legendary designer IceFrog, is the sequel to the genre defining game that has become one of the most played games in the world and a leading title at e-sports tournaments around the world.

“We are very excited about working with Valve to publish Dota 2 and build on the worldwide momentum of the highly successful franchise. We look forward to providing players in Japan and Korea the opportunity to experience this exciting new game,” said Min Seo, CEO of Nexon Korea Corporation.

Gabe Newell, President of Valve Corporation, said, “Nexon, a company with whom we have a long and strong relationship, was clearly the right choice as a publisher to successfully deliver Dota 2 into the Korean and Japanese market. Partnering with Nexon will allow us to deliver Dota 2 to a massive audience of Asian gamers via a premium service.”

In Dota 2, the primary objective is for teams to destroy their opponents’ fortified strongholds by controlling a “Hero” character. Powered by the updated Source engine, Dota 2 will deliver amazing high quality graphics, advanced matchmaking and more while maintaining the perfect game balance aspects of its predecessor. Dedicated franchise fans can look forward to seeing the masterful work of famed Dota developer IceFrog, who is also contributing to the development of DOTA2.

Apparently Valve has teamed up with Nexon (the South-Korean company responsible for F2P games like Maplestory) to deliver Dota 2 to the South Korean and Japanese markets.

Does this mean Dota 2 is nearing release date? How will it fare in the LoL-dominated South Korea? Will we see KeSPA and GSL teams create Dota 2 divisions any time soon?

Exciting :D.

I doubt it, unless the prize money for dota2 becomes at least even with LoL in those regions.

DotA is not considered an eSports worthy by the Korean scene and yet LoL is getting more spotlight than SC2 right now. Whatever Riot did in Korea... surely did well!

Anyhow, it will be a F2P game and will have place in PC Bangs for sure. Although, I'm quite sure if Valve don't directly supports organizations such has GSL we will never see DotA2 being picked by the Korean scene... sadly!
Speaking of that, I wonder what would happen if Valve started supporting events and organizations and do the same thing that Riot does, but that will never happen and I'm glad!

Looking forward to see what will happen in Japan tho. May became huge there, who knows...

nexon seems pretty successful; maplestory and sudden attack are both successful in online game rankings in korea (with sudden attack also pretty high up in afreeca stream rankings) but LoL is so dominant there.

nexon's involvement should be positive for it though.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out in Korea. Inevitably, though, I'll be frustrated when I have to make an entirely new account to play on Korean servers to deal with their ridiculous laws on video game accounts.

Part of the reason that DotA2 isn't big over here is because of that, btw. I frequent a couple of PCBangs and the owners won't install DotA2 or any games related to Steam. The gamers here just don't have the kind of access to the game that they do to LoL.

Well we have to hope that Nexon, knowing their home market and the laws and regulations that go with it, is able to turn Dota2 there into the powerhouse that it deserves to be.

As a purely personal opinion, Valve's business model strikes me as a more honest one than Riot's, feels more "right" to me and, while I don't specifically want LoL to fail, I think, from a consumer standpoint, Valve and Dota2 deserve, as of today, to be at the top of this sector.

I really think the only way that Dota2 will become big in Korea is if Nexon does what Tencent/Riot does.
LoL has a strong foothold there and Koreans follow trends strongly.

Valve would never agree with that terms. Everyone knows that's not helping the eSports scene at all but only thinking about your own game. And this is why I will never understand why everyone is supporting a company who does that. Look at CGS. It quickly died because how stupid it was even tho the event and venue itself was amazing... don't get me wrong, putting money into eSports is great and all but the way Riot does it, is wrong!

Not surprising, Valve and Nexon seemingly had a steady relationship in Korea since Left 4 Dead (2) has a bit of a niche base in PC cafe from my own experience and Dota 2 should have decent appeal already with it's free to play model already in place.

IMO, I suspect DotA 2 to easily be Valve's most established game in Korea, which isn't saying a lot seeing how Sudden Attack has so much hold over FPS's in the Korean market. Like a previous poster has mentioned however, "trends" are everything in the Korean market as a whole and it's always been a tough threshold to break in terms of trying to establish a market.

Nexon makes a lot of sense, good on them. Seems like the game is unlikely to catch on in Korea though, remain as a smaller niche.

Hopefully this works out. Korea has one of the best Esports markets, and it would suck if Dota 2 didn't catch on there.

How good are the computers in PC Bangs over there? We all know that Source engine runs in a potato but I imagine Korea having better pc's overall than China.
