Hi everyone,
I am generating a poll to determine the status of being in Masters. I am currently writing an article on how i believe StarCraft 2 is the best game in the world, and this will help me not pull so many statistics out of my ass.
Poll: Does Masters mean you're "good" (for Masters ONLY players to vote)Masters isn't anything to be proud of, and you still have lots of work to do. (76) 43% Masters is a notable feat, but you aren't quite the best of the best. (72) 40% Masters is the top 2%, and you are thus very good at the game. (30) 17% 178 total votes Your vote: Does Masters mean you're "good" (for Masters ONLY players to vote) (Vote): Masters is the top 2%, and you are thus very good at the game. (Vote): Masters is a notable feat, but you aren't quite the best of the best. (Vote): Masters isn't anything to be proud of, and you still have lots of work to do.
Poll: Does Masters mean you're "good" (for Bronze - Diamond players)Masters is a notable feat, but you aren't quite the best of the best. (47) 52% Masters is the top 2%, and you are thus very good at the game. (24) 26% Masters isn't anything to be proud of, and you still have lots of work to do. (20) 22% 91 total votes Your vote: Does Masters mean you're "good" (for Bronze - Diamond players) (Vote): Masters is the top 2%, and you are thus very good at the game. (Vote): Masters is a notable feat, but you aren't quite the best of the best. (Vote): Masters isn't anything to be proud of, and you still have lots of work to do.
Thanks so much everyone, and please please please be honest with the league you're in! It will really help keep my statistic honest!

So many arrogant people imo. Of course it means you are good, you are top 2-4%

No, it just means you can press buttons. With the amount of people quitting this game, platinum players are now masters.

Interestingly similar poll results.

So how are you defining good? You ask in the poll if masters players are good but then one of your selections is that it is a noteable feat but they aren't the best of the best. It is obvious that a masters player isn't code S level just for being promoted to masters. Silly poll, of course the top 2% makes you good at this game, it just so happens that within that top 2% is a massive skill difference between the top and the bottom.

Thank you guys for voting! If you could tell all your starcraft friends, it would really help! If i could get an unbiased turnout, it would make things so much more accurate and easier to write about! :D

I think "Masters is a notable feat, but you aren't quite the best of the best" makes the most sense. Basically, 98% of other players have a very small chance of beating you, and you have a very small chance of beating pros or GM players.

@Hammer442 "Good" is what you believe it to be. If you believe yourself to be very good at the game, or not at all. The middle one is suppose to be for those that think being in Masters is "okay".
|
Masters definitely doesn't mean you're good. Anyone can be masters if they are willing to put in the time to watch a few replays and play 10-15 games a day. The skill difference between low and high masters is much wider than the gap between bronze and diamond.
I used to think being in Masters was a significant achievement but it's not until you start playing mid-high masters that you fully realise how little it is you actually know.

Are you trolling?
When casuals quit it gets tougher to get to the top 2% of the playerbase. Platinum players are now gold.

Has anyone else realised this poll isn't mutually exclusive?
"Masters is the top 2%, and you are thus very good at the game." "Masters is a notable feat, but you aren't quite the best of the best."
I'm sure there are people out there who agree with both these sentiments. I voted for the latter one, because I think it encapsulates the truth better. It depends on how you define good, of course. To me, top 2% (Which all masters are) is definitely good, yes. To some, good means "Tournament success." (Which few masters have) and to some, good means mastery of the fundamentals. (Which many masters have, and some do not.)
Really, it all comes down to your goals. Why do you want to be in Masters? If you want to consider yourself a good SC2 player, yeah, Masters is enough. If you want to be well-respected for your skill, it isn't. If you want to win tournaments, you're not even close.

People like you are ruining the community, uninstall SC2 and delete your TL.net account. And do it fast. I'm serious.
Edit; Seriously do it. Why are you even here.

Just because you aren't the best of the best doesn't mean you are not good relatively.
Masters - good Grand masters - very good Professional gamer winning tournaments - insanely good

I'm pretty sure that masters is upwards of 4-5% of active the player pool nowadays. Unfortunately I can't find the source at the moment.

81 masters voted.
43 bronze to diamond voted.
Yea right.
Being in masters means being in 2nd place out of 7, so that speaks for itself.

Top 2% of people who have played at least one ladder game in the season, which includes tons and tons of new and very casual players. Honestly, I bet <10% of people on the ladder are serious about being good at the game, making master league more like top 20% of real players at best. That's not all that impressive.
|
@Moochlol - I don't believe that people like him are ruining the community. It is a serious belief held by a lot of people i know that Masters does not mean you are good, but rather know the game a little better than bronze players.
|
Hell No! Everytime I look at my replay, I see constant macro problems along with non-existant micro. I know I can do better but I keep forgetting to so I don't consider myself "good" If the problem couldnt be fixed by playing more then I would have thought otherwise

I don't think you realize how bad bronze players actually are.
This statement might be true for low masters--->pros, but low masters-->high masters? I don't think so. A low masters player can take a game against a high masters player with some weird build. A bronze player will never beat a diamond player.
