Hey TL folks,
I just had a really (random) idea on my way back home from uni and would like to know your thought about it.
It revolves around a new possible upgrade for Warprism. The idea is that an upgrade for the Warprism is added (maybe to the Dark Shrine(?) even if it would be weird having an upgrade for a Robo unit there. We are going to call the upgrade "Dark Consumption" for now though).
The upgrade should be rather expensive, lets say 250/250. And gives the new ability "Dark Consumption" to the Warprism.
Dark Consumption will allow the Warprism to consume a Protoss (ground) unit (consume means death) to give a new ability to the Warprism similar to the consumed unit. A list of possible suggestions would include:
Probe - Build stuff HT - Energy bar + feedback DT - Cloaked Warprism xO (freakin op, speed reduced by 50% or some shit) Immortal - Hardened Shields (kinda useless i guess) Zealot - Speedboost or Charge (you target a location WP flies there with improved speed, even faster warprisms zomfg) Stalker - Blink Sentry - Energy Bar + Guardian Shield or Hallucination Colossus - This one is tricky, maybe units under the warp in fan when warprism is in warpmode can walk over cliffs as colossi can?
Please don't go apeshit cause it might be op, its obviously pretty good. Remember that the unit in the process gets lost and if you lose the warprism you have to sacrifice another unit. Maybe you also have to consume a warprism full with one unit type (so 4 zealots die to give you a shitty speedboost... niiice!)
Don't only focus on balance, say if you like the idea (the plays that could come from it, if you would enjoy watching it, what could be better about it). Wont probably get introduced anyways, but lets enjoy the thought about it in this thread.

Although It's fun to combine units and make new ones, I don't think it suits starcraft very well. I always saw starcraft as game when you can use simple unit many different ways, not many units slighly different ways.Last edit: 2012-11-23 00:31:54 |

Why is it, that people hate simple units so much and want to add some complex mechanics and rulings for the units? It's not just this, but the DT thread, "connected pylons" mechanic or "rines shooting from medivac". Why not just focus on unit interactions which could make even the simple units interesting, rather than giving each unit some spell/special rulings?
It might be fun to think about this kind of stuff, but you are making the game rather hard for random viewer or new player to grasp. |

I don't know if that would be as useful on a warp prism, per se. I mean, the warp prism transports, has a speed upgrade, and can warp in gateway units. Why give it this ridiculously strong upgrade too? It doesn't need it, and it's too much stuff on a transport unit.
Also, sounds too much like the Replicant.
Also, "warp prism". |

| Be fun for a custom map but it doesn't seem like it would be very balanced or good for competitive play. |

This is the way to go; interesting unit dynamics where the sum is truly greater than the parts. |

I'm down with that idea.
Warpprisms should be able to consume other warp-prisms so you build like 10 of them, have one consume all the others and then you have a mega-prism that can pick up a Nexus and drop it on top of units, which costs all of its shield.
The Mega-Prism in Warpgate-Mode creates a warp-field so potent that you can instantly summon Nexi on it, which you can then pick up for more ammunition.
Even better:
If you Neural a Mega-Prism you can consume an infestor and then pick up Hatcheries with a Mega Tentacle and throw them.Last edit: 2012-11-23 01:14:55 |

As far as I remember, it was an armored troop carrier which could load either rifle-infantry or siege-infantry (grenade launcher guys). After the load, the armored troop carrier would become sort of a tank with a weapon similar to that of the troop it loaded (guns or grenades).
It's a funny idea but I don't see what it solves |

I dont see it. Blik warp prism? Feedback? Invisivility? Sorry but it doesnt sound right. But maybe the basic concept can be used to create something interesting.
For example: lets call the hability "sacrifice", so you can kill one of you units to let the warp prism to cast a skill that does X damage or lasts X time (X proportional to the sacrificed unit shields). This way for a price you can make a different way of harrasment. |

| Not fits to protoss. if Overlord will be able to consume and use unit abilities, then it can be awesome |

In all honesty : I think the prism as-is is good enough already, and when combined with good ground units it does what its supposed to do. I see it as some speedy transport method for harassment a la shuttle + reaver. If the prism isnt good enough, I feel that rather than changing the prism itself (which again I think is great already, esp with speed), give a unit (similar role as reaver) to go with it.
The warp prism already serves for a good amount of strategies. It does not need more. I am not even going to talk wether or not the ability you suggested is OP or not. If you want the ability to transfer abilities, put it on another unit or make a new unit altogether. The ability you suggested itself might be cool, but it does not fit on the prism.Last edit: 2012-11-23 01:38:29 |

Just sounds silly if you put it like that ._. |

The issue is that the Prism would be able to have 6 different things it may or may not do. Even if you would make its current ability clearly visible, the opponent would have a tough time identifying what those 6 warp prisms could do to him (2 real ones 4 hallucinations and a cloaked one). You always have to think of the opponent that has to deal with this stuff as well. A Speed Prism is already a great threat lategame and really hard to deal with. |

You could also put an Engineer in there so it turns into a massive robot arm on wheels, and repairs mech units! |

I don't really play Protoss or Zerg, so I can't really give any input about how this ability would be/could be balanced or how powerful it possibly become.
I can say however, that the idea of consuming a unit doesn't really has a Protoss feel to it. It has more of a Zergy feel to it, you know?
When I think of Protoss I think of strong warriors that are few in number. So sacrificing one of my expensive, powerful units to gain a power up for one of my other units seems a little out of place. But I mean if I was Zerg, I wouldn't mind consuming a Zergling, as there are many of them and they are cheap.
I mean, Command and Conquer 3 had the Nod Avatar which pretty much did what you prescribed. But even so, Nod had mostly inexpensive units that were easy to mass, so destroying a scorpion tank wasn't too big of a deal. (Mind you Stealth Tanks cost a pretty penny) GDI never had such ability because their units cost arms and legs, so you wouldn't want to sacrifice one unless you absolutely had to. So this is where I'm coming from when I say the ability feels like a Zerg one instead of a Protoss one.
But that's just my two cents. |
