To many people Santosh Kumar Singh is dead, literally.
So this 32-year-old has hit upon a novel idea to get his 'life' back. While the presidential elections is giving political parties sleepless nights, Singh believes this to be the best time to make himself heard.
Declared dead by the Uttar Pradesh government, Singh has decided to file his nomination for the race to Raisina Hill to prove that he is still breathing. 'I chose to file my nomination for the upcoming elections to remind the establishment that I am alive,' Singh, holding a receipt from the returning officer in his hand, said/

TLDR:
Indian guy marries dalit girl (dalit = from the lowest caste); his higher-caste cousins declare him legally dead, and then proceed to "inherit" his 12 acres of land. Indian guy does not take this lying down; instead, he decides to run for President to get the media attention necessary to win his life back.
For anyone who knows anyone in Bollywood, this is a ridiculously easy movie to make, by the way. Imagine Slumdog Millionaire, except with a coherent plot. Oscar Gold. |

| Stories like that of the movie Slumdog Millionaire are nice and relatively benign, but when something real and substantial rears its head in resistance to the caste system in many parts of India, that head gets chopped off very quickly. I don't see this ending happily to be frank. |

| This happens all the time apparently (not the president part lol). Countries like India have officials who can easily be bought out to have someone "killed" so someone else can take all their shit legally. |

Well then time for foreign filmmakers to get in on the act. Why shouldn't the Weinstein Brothers fund this? |

Really? does racism exist in the u.s? If you search you'd easily find stories about it. |

Of course there is racism in the US; this has nothing to do with the topic at hand. That has nothing to do with a factual statement of the caste system's existence in India. Hell, I'll go even farther, in many of the major population centers of India, the caste system is almost always directly to blame for the continued subjugation of generations upon generations of peasantry. |

Factual statement lol? How so? do you have any proof to say that they are being subjugated? The ruling ministers/mlas are from mostly the that section, they have reservations in all educational institutions, and they dont even have to pay 90% of their college fees, most goverment posts are held by them. You could find stories where things like this happen, or there was a clash and some side was put down. That does not become "factual" lol.
Most people dont are about what caste you are. Last edit: 2012-11-24 13:11:25 |

I apologize if I gave you the impression I was suggesting that India was not making progress; I certainly can recognize that caste is not as important in contemporary Indian consciousness as it once was. Still, just like any modern society, India has odd little aspects that are not so savory, and the caste system is certainly one of those. |

Dartoo, even if racism exists elsewhere, how does that matter to the question of whether or not the caste system needs to be dismantled in India or not?
Second, going along the vein of comparing India to other countries... I challenge you to find a single 21st century instance of US racism where someone's relatives declared him/her legally dead for marrying outside of his/her race.
India cannot expect to treat gigantic portions of its citizenry with the equivalent of 1920s Jim Crow laws and expect to fully develop as a country |

As this topic is about 6 months old, I feel like there was a follow up on it somewhere but I haven't searched for it yet. I feel like the news source that covered it should do a follow up or something. |
