If anyone is familiar with the popular anti-virus software McAfee Antivirus, you would think the individual running from authorities is somehow related. You would be right. John McAfee is a programmer and the founder of McAfee Antivirus. He is currently involved in a highly publicized run from authorities in Belize. Although he refuses to cooperate with Belize officials, he is more than willing to engage in highly publicized interviews with major news networks, while on the run. He has allegedly produced a blog (www.whoismcafee.com) to chronicle his life on the run.
The Back Story
McAfee lived in Belize, where he kept a security detail including armed guards and guard dogs. McAfee's neighbor, Gregory Faull, had filed a complaint that the dogs were too noisy. Several months later, McAfee claimed that he found four of his guard dogs poisoned, and decided to put them out of their misery by shooting each one in the head. Two days later, Gregory Faull was found dead in his home from a gunshot wound to the head. Belize officials wanted to bring McAfee in for questioning, although he was not yet a suspect in the case.
What Happened Next
McAfee did not want to be questioned by Belize police, and began to evade the authorities. McAfee has claimed his primary objective is to clear his name, but will refuse to cooperate with Belize authorities, citing fear for his life due to his refusal to pay a bribe to a corrupt politician months earlier. McAfee went through dozens of disposable cell phones, and probably changed his location on multiple occasions. Tuesday, December 4th, McAfee emerged in Guatemala's capital, seeking refuge from Belize authorities.
The Current Situation
On Wednesday, December 5th, Guatemalan authorities detained McAfee, claiming he entered the country illegally. McAfee could possibly be deported back to Belize.
Summary
Belize authorities claim they want to question McAfee in connection with the murder of his next door neighbor, Gregory Faull, but that he is not a suspect. They also say they are pursuing multiple leads, strengthened by the fact three other individuals have been detained for questioning.
McAfee claims that he is afraid of his life and that the authorities in Belize are corrupt, and persecuting him. He maintains his innocence.
McAfee has been claiming that the Belize government is setting him up and that this whole thing is some giant conspiracy to kill him. He said they (the gov't) killed his body double while he was escaping or something. Not sure who to believe, but it is definitely an odd story.

The cynic in me thinks this is just a burned out millionaire who did a shitload of drugs and is completely out of touch with reality...but the misanthropic conspiracy theorist really wants the whole "the government is trying to kill me" thing to be true because how often does awesome stuff like that happen in real life? Oh right, all the time...but these stories don't usually involve crazy rich white guys running around in the jungle in Central America. Guess we'll just find out (or we wont!)
McAfee looks like a character straight out of GTA. I can just imagine him in the game, pacing back and forth on drugs giving you missions. I've been following this story and I the dude is batty. I think he's guilty.

Haha, you're right! He could also appear on Californication!

I read that he dug a hole and hid in it, but no mention of a box.

Vice reporters were with him for a week or so and are releasing a documentary very soon
edit1: looks like they are still with him
About an hour ago John McAfee was picked up by the Guatemala special police task force for questioning about his illegal entry into the country. His lawyer, Mr. Guerra, accompanied him to Emigrason Albergue in Guatemala City and he is attempting to get John out before his press conference tomorrow. Updates to come.

I'll agree he's insane or at least out of it because of the drugs, but I don't think it's "likely" that he's a murderer. He wasn't even officially a suspect until well after he'd bolted, just that the law enforcement there wanted to talk to him and see if he knew anything based on the fact that the man was his neighbor. For them the fact he bolted was suspicious, but him being a man on drugs that is paranoid bolting is probably a natural reaction. So I don't think it's likely that he's a murderer, but it is possible. It's also possible he's just drug addled and extremely paranoid.
Unless something changed in the last week they didn't even make him their prime suspect, just a person of interest yet. I think it was the international media that declared him the prime suspect. But granted I haven't paid attention to the news from within that country directly in about a week so I'm not sure what they're saying now.

no one forced to move down to belize or to live like a gang-lord-wannabe. could have moved to amsterdam, kept using the bud and engaging in sex with 20 year old girls from 3rd world countries there as well.
