So, starting... today I suppose (tho it has happened once or twice before that), my computer has decided that it only wants to boot once in every 10 or so attempts.
Some backstory:
A couple of weeks back, I left my computer in sleep mode over night and came back to it running a cluster check on my hard drive.. Worried me a bit, especially as it had started getting slow accessing files on parts of it.
Anyway, having an SSD in my laptop, I'd kind of gotten the itch to buy one for my desktop as well so I decided now was the time, went out and bought myself a new Samsung 830 series 128 GB SSD and another Seagate Barracuda 2TB (ST2000DM001).
Installation was somewhat troublesome, it basically wouldn't recognize that I had a harddrive connected that had windows installed on it.... Ended up fixing it by switching what cables I was using to connect the SSD to the motherboard.
However, starting today, the same problem is basically repeating itself every time I reboot, on average it's taking 5-6 tries or more before it will even get to a windows start-up screen.
The screen where it gets stuck is the motherboard boot screen (where you'd normally have a black screen with white text displaying your bios version and so on, theoretically I could switch to this more standard view if it wasnt for the fact that my wonderful modern USB keyboard does not initiate until after this so I can't even access bios except when the Boot Failure Guard kicks in after enough failed attempts --).
I updated my bios today, didn't fix anything.
I thought there might be an issue with my DVD drive, as everytime that the boot process proceeded as per normal, it spun up, and everytime it just got stuck, well, it didn't. However the problem persisted upon disconnecting it.
The times that it does boot, it boots every bit as fast as you'd expect from an SSD and there's not been any problems with anything.
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500k
Motherboard: ASRock P67 Pro3
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 TI
Win7 ultimate 64bit

All drivers up to date, I didn't install anything new recently or make any alterations as far as I am aware.
Not sure what else to put that is relevant. I'd go to a tech support forum but prefer TL....
Probably unrelated, however my monitor began flickering yesterday (certain colours only), however this is a known problem with the monitor I have (Samsung Syncmaster 305t and I hope it's just a faulty cable, if not I'll hand it in for repair and pray I don't have to attempt DIY surgery -.-). I doubt it's related.
If I'm missing anything please let me know, not really sure what information is relevant, very much appreciate any help. |

Go minimal. Disconnect the DVD drive and the 2TB drive, then try booting the SSD with various SATA cables and ports. See if any combination is reliable. Make sure the SATA (power and data) connectors are properly seated, because they're not very good connectors.

Unplugged everything excet the SSD, it boots fine (several attempts). Re-plugged the 2TB it boots fine (several attempts)... Re-plugged the DVD, it boots slightly slightly slower but boots fine (several attempts) -___-

If your modern keyboard have NKRO over usb then that might be the culprit.
Do you have the latest bios for the motherboard? |

It doesnt have NKRO, tho I think part of the left side might be > the standard USB 6KRO. Its just a blackwidow stealth, hasnt caused problems before.

Expand this please.
Did you reconnected everything back as it was before? Is it booting fine now?
Do you have other keyboard so you can actually edit the settings in bios? Anyway, your keyboard should work properly with this kind of bios, so I think it is some sort of conflict of devices. Did you tried another usb port? Maybe you have disabled legacy usb support in bios?

Just a small point, what is your bios set to boot from each boot up? I have had a similar ish issue with my PC. I had just bought a SSD for it, and i just needed to change the boot up selection to SSD, as it kept getting confused.
Also from then on it said i didn't have a HDD but it booted fine still.Last edit: 2012-12-19 21:27:46 |

- borrow/buy a PS2 keyboard so you can enter the BIOS to adjust your bios settings
- check you ssd/hdd config and settings in BIOS
- check that you have connected SSD to the intel sata ports (grey ones I think but check with your manual)
- try connecting dvd and 2tb HDD to other sata ports to see if it makes a difference
- try new sata cables (sounds unlikely but I have seen it happen)

1) Yeah everything plugged in back the way it was - rebooted 4-5 times to test and went fine each time (previously today the problem would occur every time I booted).
2) Once it goes past the motherboard splash screen my keyboard works fine (in bios).

If it keeps working fine, it was probably just a bad contact in an SATA connector. Like I said, they're not the most reliable connectors.

I think that's unrelated, and the cable is probably fine - but the monitor cable may need to be more securely attached, or your video card may need to be reseated. I had a similar problem that was resolved in such a manner.

If it keeps working fine, it was probably just a bad contact in an SATA connector. Like I said, they're not the most reliable connectors.
Seems like this is almost certainly the case --- problem randomly re-occured after moving the computer around a bit, and once resolved windows 're-found' my DVD drive. Seems it's whats fucking up. |
