In times of need in ones life, everyone must band together to help support each other and that is exactly what the Time of Rising community is about.
Recently one of our community members has been diagnosed with a disease called Keratoconus, which is without surgery could mean blindness at a very young age of 18.
Along with recent unfortunate circumstances, his family are finding it tough to afford such a costly surgery at around $2000.
So in a bid to help raise some support for one of our brothers, we are organizing a 24 hour stream to help with the funding for Paroxysm @SC2Paroxysm.

Simply tuning in for the event, or retweeting the post on twitter to help support the effort for a truly humbling individual, despite being in such a position, it still amazes me how positive a person he remains.
Thank you so much for reading through guys, I know I don't post much here, but the SC2 community has always been one which I have been honored to be a part of, eSports fiighting!

I have advanced keratoconus and am awaiting surgery for it in Korea and it does not cause blindness. Also the surgery is always available to fix it at any time as optics have improved drastically over the years. Kinda dirty the way you word it, and the keratoconus surgery is not $2000, Lasik isn't even that much.

Surgery is actually more than $2000. I have gotten eye surgery to correct a condition I have called exatropia and it costs upwards of $2000, but insurance covers most of it. If you don't have insurance though, I could see how surgeries could get extremely costly.

I too have advanced severe keratoconus, and I cannot read letters out of my right eye. I am virtually blind, as I cannot perceive images in my right eye, meaning I cannot read/all images blur together. I'm sorry, but it's not dirty at all, as I may as well be blind for all I can see. Also, my specialist stated that without surgery blindness is always on the cards. Whether or not he meant literal blindness or distortion of images to the point where your vision is completely and utterly useless, I'm unsure. Yes it is always available, but I was also told that I need it urgently, as I am at the extreme end of the scale.
There are various different types of surgery to fix it, and the cost of my surgery is $1500 AUD. I also have to travel to a city some 20 hours away, which means that aeroplane fares/accommodation fees cost well over $2000 AUD for a 5 day trip. Cross linking hasnt been documented well enough for it to warrant a rebate, according to my eye specialist, which means I have to pay the full price upfront. My left eye is also beginning to develop the disease, which means I will have to go back for another 'cross-linking' surgery within the next 2 years, if it develops as fast and as severely as my right eye. As well as this, I have to go back for checkups every 6 months, and pay for contact lenses to aid in the reparation of the damage already done to my eyes, because glasses don't work the same way, but I think you should already know that With all of that being said, each situation is different, you didn't state which surgery you are going for, nor provide any information about it.
EDIT: Just read through a few webpages not including the documents I was given by my specialist. Came across this:
"Blindness in the classic sense will not happen. Legal blindness and partial-sightedness/low vision can occur if proper corrective treatment is not given timely." (http://kcglobal.org/content/view/10/25/)
I am in the situation where, if I am not treated in a timely manner, I can be legally classed as blind. This initially was misconstrued to me by my specialist, however the consequences are just as severe. This problem can cause me to lose my license and my ability to work in certain industries, just to name a few. For people to better understand my vision problem, I can't even read a book properly at the moment, because my vision is that blurred. Being on the computer is similar, but not quite as bad, as there is better lighting. If i am walking, and sunlight goes in my eyes, I cannot see a thing. Trees in the background blur in with EVERYTHING. I cannot see oncoming traffic as I drive, and the lines on the road blur together also.

So you're getting cross-linking surgery? If your vision is as bad as you say it is and cannot be corrected with special lenses, then shouldn't you be getting a keratoplasty, i.e. a donor cornea? Cross-linking only aims at stabilizing the cornea in the early stages to stop the keratoconus from getting worse.
I have keratoconus on both eyes myself. It was diagnosed 13 years ago. Cross-linking as a surgical technique to keep it from progressing came too late for me. For the past 3-4 years, I've been wearing a keratoconus lens only on my better left eye, as the keratoconus is much steeper in the right eye, to the point where a lens cannot stay put there anymore.
Well, after all these years I'm getting keratoplasty surgery this week as a donor cornea has been found for me. I will enter the clinic tomorrow and get operated the day after. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. Maybe a blog post is in order.
Surgery costs for the keratoplasty are covered by medical insurance here in Germany.
