Im happy to announce that I am starting a new direction for my show Pro Corner. The show has always been about helping players by showcasing their immense skill and knowledge to the community by explaining strategies and walking through scenarios. I feel like players do a great job of this type of content with their stream commentary these days so this strategy content space is a bit saturated. So I feel we have run our course with that format and Im all about bringing something unique to our community so it’s time for change.
So what will we be doing now on Pro Corner? The show will still continue to focus on helping players, but we'll be taking the approach of using the show as a collaborative platform to create a public life/training regimen designed for players in the western culture. For a long time, Ive felt that the practice regimens that I hear about whether here in the US or in Korean have not been the most efficient. The west in particularly has never had organized/best practice structure. Everyone is doing their own thing whether it’s individuals or team houses. We need to fix this NOW!
I feel strongly that gathering the thoughts and ideas of some of the best minds in our community each week and using an open-minded/unbiased approach that we can develop/implement productive ideas that will help the western players (amateur or pro) establish a great baseline. A lot of talk has always revolved around practice time and techniques but very little about everything else. Not only will we be focused on the improvement of players' skill and competitiveness but also we will focus on helping to structure the non-playing aspects of a player's life (mental, health, lifestyle, etc). A happy player is a good player. With all the talk of the westerners needing to catch up to the Koreans, this is something that will assist in this pursuit and could potentially be better depending on the outcome.
Each week myself, Gretorp, Robert Yip (sports performance psychologist), and a guest (players and other great minds) will discuss, brainstorm, and figure out a few specific details of this developing regimen. Everything discussed will be documented and formalized as we go but the best form of documentation will be in the form of the show episodes themselves.
Why are you doing this? I want to help players develop the most efficient life structure for themselves. Right now not every player has the luxury of being in a team house. This is the case for the majority of the players in our industry so I think it's very important these players living/practicing on their own have a structure they can help make their lives as efficient and focused as possible. Even if you're a player on a team in a team house environment, there is still a base line focus/structure that every player needs themselves. There's nothing better than seeing our favorite players happy and performing at a high level.
What makes you guys qualified to do this? The 3 of us bring something different to the table. Gretorp's experience in being a GM player, former pro and a coach for it'sGoSu at one point will help from the standpoint of developing something completely new in regards to practice and competition. Robert has the education when it comes to performance and the mental side. He also has experience developing plans for some current big name players. And my project management experience will be a necessity in this on-going collaborative/development process. Also, this is something Ive been thinking about a lot over time now and I have MANY tips and ideas for structuring daily life as efficient as possible.
What type of guests will you have? Id like to have a select number of known players to join us in brainstorming as well as other people in our community I think would be perfect in this process. Liquid'TLO will be our first guest to start us off but I plan to reach out to a pretty diverse group of people to bring on with Gretorp, Robert, and myself to cover some facets people haven't been thinking or talking about.
Will you be taking feedback/comments/ideas from the viewers/community? Absolutely. Every show instead of the typical Q&A session I have on all my shows, we will have a viewer brainstorm section. This is where we will take callers and input from stream chat on ideas pertaining to what we're discussing that week. PM me, post on this thread or the Pro Corner thread, and anywhere else ideas you have that you think would be amazing. I want the community to be a huge part of this.
What do you expect to be the product of all this? I think best case, pie in the sky scenario we end up with an incredible resource (written/VOD archive/tools/etc) that anyone can use and will be available to the community. But what Im expecting at the very least is a massive amount of creative thinking and idea generation that could spark improvement in what players and teams are doing right now. Also, it’d be great if a result was more players grabbing life by the horns and having a clear picture and focus of what they’re doing instead of being in a lost/hazy/uncertain state.
Wouldn't a regimen need to be customized for each player? Absolutely. The details of a regimen are different for each individual, but we are focused on developing an overlying framework with applied principles that can work for casual players all the way up to pros. The customization will be up to the players.
This process of discussion, accumulating tools, and documentation will be an on going process. The plan is to have all of this public as we go so the links to centralized resources (Probably Google Drive and VODs) will be made available from week to week. The OP for the Pro Corner thread may be the best place to look for now to find links to everything.
Again we’ll be kicking things off this Monday (05/06) 16:00 EDT / 22:00 CEST w/ our guest Liquid’TLO.
I know it might take some time for folks to get what we're trying to do here but Im really excited at the prospects of what we can achieve together if we collect and structure all of our ideas!

very nice, looking forward to the new direction! =)

I think you mean "regimen."
Unless this is the beginning of the StarCraft 2 military. In which case, sign me up!

TheOgnis and TLO have some great ideas, consider them guests sometime.
The first issue you should tackle is both effective practicing as well as the ways to balance both school and practice. Few still do it and manage to consistently achieve.

Please get Hwanni or Daniel Lee, they speak English and have a long history of coaching/managing th eSTRO pro BW team. I think Hwanni works for EG in Korea now.

Looking forward to being a part of this show, so much has been happening with regard players looking for that extra edge for competition, you can just look at Naniwa and TLO as players who are doing more than 'just' playing to get better. I hope that the viewers or community in general will contribute a lot to this as it stands to help their favourite players get better, which will help them get further in tournaments and hopefully increase their longevity in the sport. If anyone has questions or opinions on the matter then consider this show an open forum for constructive thought.

This sounds pretty intriguing, everyone always talks about making foreigners more practiced in how they do training following some set methods, but no one actually does anything looking towards it . This sounds like a cool way to see what steps people can take. Hope it works out, I'll be following it.

Yes. This. I've got a very modstely sized clan and I'm trying to come up with ways for us to practice. obviously, we're not pros, but even on a casual once-a-week basis, it's tough figuring out ways to practice effectively all the time.

I would love to have people like Huk, Naniwa, TLO, Ret or MAJOR on the show who have been to Korea and lived with a Korean progaming team. Major even with a Kespa team. I think pointing out the difference is a good step to understand what's missing for the foreigners.

Hope this works, it seems like this can be really interesting. Good luck.

This looks great. Will be tuning in for sure.

This is such an awesome, unique, and timely idea for a show. And you've really thought out how to develop it, and brought in the right elements in co-hosts. I've been talking about this topic for years, as many others in the community have - that training for "foreign" players seems to just be all over the place, undisciplined, not regimented in any way, and lacks any kind of methodical skill development process.
Think drills for any ball sport, playbooks and playcalls for the largest sports like football and basketball. These are pieces of the game removed from the actual gameplay, in order to hone certain skills.
Think weightlifting, stretching, and calisthenics for any track athlete. They're training elements that are not directly "playing the game," but result in a significant performance increase inside the game.
Think diets, sleep patterns, daily schedules down to the hour in order to amplify the performance cycles upward.
Think fully developed stat cards on teams, players, etc. in order to know their strength and weakness trends.
Day9 touched on this a couple times in his early SC2 dailies, like 252, 257, 271.
Anyway, great great idea, and I look forward to watching you guys develop it!

This is interesting. I will def be checking it out for sure. Practice def makes perfect but i def think there is a science to how to effectively use your time to get better. one cool thing i see when i watch Spanishiwa play is that he almost always watches his replays after he plays a game, win or lose to try and learn from it. I kinda like that idea, i myself dont watch quite enough replays. My clan also has a replay night where we watch a game from each other and pick it apart. I think it is really useful to have several other ppl be able to watch and critique a game of urs. Its very helpful imo :D

wow, your clan sounds terrible
But seriously, these replay nights do help out our clan. We have a number of players who said they found their play noticeably improve because we did sysematic improvements. I think take command extends this even further. So with all these new tools, I think it's great that you're trying to find a way to codify a practice regimen.
