ROOT SEED's Bones - The Thinker
If Myles "Bones" Donald were living in another time period, I would have pegged him as a philosopher. Ever calm, ever patient, and ever thoughtful. As I spoke to him in his interview for the show, normally about half an hour long, I quickly found the time fly as we hit the one hour mark. What's interesting about this is that he actually does not ramble about topics or just constantly speak his mind. Everything he's said I can feel he's actually put time into thinking about. He speaks when he feels it's worth speaking about, and has thought enough that he actually has a lot of really insightful things to say.
It's also worth noting that Bones has found himself the position of Captain for the recently formed ROOT SEED Academy. As a 19 year old who seems to have the maturity of a 30 year old in some respects, it's safe to assume he's handling the responsibility well. He's a hard worker who is willing to put in the effort to succeed. A quick look at the work he does to try and put himself out there demonstrates that as he constantly releases replay packs and updates his Liquidpedia page with links to vods, replay packs and recently played games dating back to 2012.
I mentioned yesterday how Hellokitty's personality came through in his play. Bones expresses himself as well, but in a completely opposite way. His liquidpedia article very cleverly quotes ROOT Minigun, "This guy really hates to attack. I mean, holy shit! which may give hints to his playstyle. Bones is a very defensive and patient player. You can tell that like other aspects of life, he's put a lot of thought into how he plays and executes it beautifully. This especially comes across when you realize that Bones doesn't take pride in his wide range of builds implored. Instead, he finds strength in how having one strong line of play that has different adaptations depending on his opponent. Bones is not a tiger that pounces on his prey, but rather an elephant charging down his enemy. He may take a little bit of time to build up that momentum, and you'll see him coming from a mile away, but once he gets charging, what are you really going to be able to do about it?
As much hate as the defensive style may get, I do want to recommend you check out some of his games before you judge. While people may still be recovering from the nightmares of PvZ's such as Mana vs Firecake, Bones' playstyle could more closely be related to SKT1's Rain. He's an incredibly safe player with an impeccable defense, and relies on his incredible late game skill to catch up for the extra safe play he takes. Not only that, but being a safe player does not imply never attacking with your units, despite what Minigun joked about. In fact, his warp prism harassment and zealot harassment is one of my favorite parts of his play to watch.
His Group
Bones has a tough first opponent. JonSnow is certainly one of the favorites to win the tournament, boasting a solid performance in Challenger league against well established players. However, I believe it will come down to whether or not Bones can handle JonSnow's mid game aggression. Bones is a man of macro and defense, whereas JonSnow has indicated his dislike for the late game of ZvP. It's going to be a very interesting battle, but if he can make it past that, he will either face Hellokitty or Jowj. For selfish reasons, I'm actually eager to see a Bones vs Hellokitty match because not only do they have such radically different styles, but it would be a battle of the players themselves. Both Hellokitty and Bones put the heart of themselves into their play and I can't help but get excited at the prospect of two players fighting not just with their will to win, but their ideals in life that far transcend Starcraft. That is something beautiful that anyone and everyone can appreciate.
A man who is a master of patience is a master of everything else.
