Hello TL, I'm nemuke, Japanese former SC2 Terran Player. I have participated ESWC 2011 as Japanese representative once. Although I stop playing SC2 since November of last year, I'm very fan of E-sports culture.
So I went and wrote down my impression to the Japanese SC2 and LoL Grand Championship on 25-26th in my blog. Now I'm trying to write my article in English. I'd be happy if my post could be a little help for your curious about the SC2 Scene in Japan. **I guess my English is not good enough for writing my impression. I'm studying English by writing this article, so I'd be very happy if you would correct my English sentences.
JCG Grand Championship is an offline LoL/SC2 tournament in Japan. 4 players of each game who advanced through the 4 seasonal tournament will compete in JCG Grand Championship.
Event stage. It was not casual-tournament-like but TV-studio atomosphere.
You can see the matches in this Twitch streaming record. (SC2 3rd place match and Final will begin from 0:33~ and 5:20~).
The result for SC2 is following: 1st: kur0a - 100,000 Yen 2nd: TMjpg - 40,000 Yen 3rd: Vaisravana - 20,000 Yen 4th: Grinkers - 10,000 Yen
The result for LoL is following: 1st: Rascal Jester - 500,000 Yen (apaMEN, cogcog, Lillebelt, Rainbrain, Rkp) 2nd: Veck - 200,000 Yen (alleycats, Astarore, BonziN, Promes, Riosilva) 3rd: Ozone Rampage - 100,000 Yen (Aotaka, dejiwo, ENvy, MMeron, tel) 4th: DetonatioN FM - 50,000 Yen (Gouken, Gorira13, Maa, sid, Yutaprold)
The actual time schedule was following: 10:00~ Doors Open 10:30~ Opening Ceremony 11:00~ Starcraft2 3rd Place match 12:30~ LoL 3rd Place Match 16:00~ Starcraft2 Final 18:00~ LoL Final 20:00~ Closing Ceremony
Starcraft2 Match began right after the Opening address by JCG Directer "Matsujun".
The matches were casted by Haruno(left) and zer0cal0rie(right).
Starcraft2 brief match report DtN.Vaisravana(Z) vs Grinkers(Z) Grinkers went Mutas on 1st match. Vaisravana crushed it by 2base-Roach/Queen Push.
Both went Roaches on 2nd match. Grinkers stopped vaisravana's early push then crushed his base. Vaisravana won 3rd match with macro style with ling harass. Vaisravana 10pooled Grinkers who was just going 15hat. Vaisravana gained big advantage and became the 3rd place winner.
DtN.Vaisravana and Team manager. They're planning to participate in rookie league in Korea this April too.
Grinkers and his cute shoes.
(P)kurOa vs TMjpg(Z) kurOa won the 1st match by immortal-sentry push. 2nd match on Frost with cross spawn, TMjpg denied kurOa's 3rd base and his counter attack with warp-prism.Then he started to engage with Ultralisk with plenty of resource then switched into Muta as finishing blow.
kurOa won 3rd match on Yeonsu by using Void Ray Push while taking a 3rd base. 4th match went a kind of chaotic battle... each player did cheese after cheese. Both still only have 2base at 15mins of the game. However kurOa shut down TMjpg's lings by putting GW-wall and became the champion of this season.
kurOa won 100,000 Yen
TMjpg won 40,000 Yen
There was also LoL Grand Championship. Here's some photos of the other scene. LoL Matches
LoL Team Playing
A view of the observer seats
Poorly prepared However, there were things which seemed to be poorly prepared.
-Sound environment In Starcraft2 3rd place match, Vaisravana could hear everything of the commentary. He thought this is bad so after the 1st game of the match, he asked the admins to solve the problem. Finally they turned the game music louder and played the music in the event place to block the commentary as the emergency measure for each 3rd place match. Later on they prepared earphone inside of headphone just like GSL style for each final.
-Environment for observing The event place is positioned from the view of front like this: Play Area and stage, observer seats, Curtain, Casting room and backstage.
This is a photo of the observer seats. Casting room entrances are open at the both side of curtains. Commentary came from the left side the of curtain to the observer seats. However, you hardly can hear the commentary at around the center of the observer seats. Thus the audience while observing, especially SC2 was very quiet just like in classic concert.
JCG Directer Matsujun addressed me about JCG's concept in the interview on later day.
-Why did you choose this place? It's not as famous as internet-cafes such as ICafe in Akihabara, WIP in Yoyogi.
I wanted to make streaming video more exciting this time. That's why we decided to use TV studio. For the people watching online usually, to show the player's smile and passion, I wanted to make them feel "This is different with the streaming usually I watch". Though SC2 matches turned out as very quiet, I think we succeeded to make an interesting video like GSL, MLG.
-Why did the sound-problem happen in the 3rd-place match? We expected the curtain to block the sound, but once we arrived at the event place, we realized that the curtain is not long enough to block the sound from backstage. It is not intended that both sides of backstage are open.
-How about the tournament this year? How often will you do offline tournament this year too? and with same form? I meant 4 seasonal tournament then grand championship. Maybe 1-2 times in this year for offline. I don't want to take same form because I realized it's boring in the middle of the season by repeating the same situation. JCG have a concept that they are always doing new challenge.
-So it's the challenge that counts. Are you planning on anything as new challenge? For example, take some new game titles into JCG tournament. Of course. but we don't want to take popular e-sports titles in abroad only. LoL and SC2 are just continuation from my work. In fact we're hosting other tournament in FPS title named "Battle Field 4", and Japanese Moba title named "Chaos Heroes Online". "Competitive" is keyword for us. If we thought "this game is great for competitive", We'd like to take them in our tournament.
Finally, the event progress was totally smooth. It was written that it will finish at 21:30 in time schedule in advance. Actually it finished at 20:00 which is ahead of planned schedule.

Cool stuff Thanks for posting the link to VODs, I will take a look at them when I get home from work tonight. It would be awesome if Japan became a bigger part of global competitive gaming (instead of just in fighting games)

Maybe 1-2 times in this year for offline. I don't want to take same form because I realized it's boring in the middle of the season by repeating (the) same situation. JCG have a concept that (they are) always doing new challenge.
-So It's(it's) the challenge that counts. Are you planning (on) anything as new challenge? For example, take some new game titles into JCG tournament. Of course. But(but) we don't want to take popular e-sports titles in abroad only. LoL and SC2 are just continuation from my work. In fact we're hosting other tournament in FPS title named "Battle Field 4",(and) Japanese Moba title named "Chaos Heroes Online". "Competitive" is keyword for us. If we thought "this game have well-considered for competitive", We'd like to take them in our tournament.
Finally, The(the) event progress was totally smooth. It was written 21:30 close in time schedule in advance,(.) It finished at 20:00 which is very ahead of planned schedule. ok so I went through and fixed some stuff. Overall, it's not bad but I noticed you were making the same mistakes sometimes(capitalization in the middle of a sentence or after comma etc...). The bold is what the mistake it and the brackets is what to change it to. If you want me to make another post with only changes, let me know Here's the updated one with the changes: + Show Spoiler +On January 29 2014 13:24 nemuke wrote: Both went roaches on 2nd match. DtN.Vaisravana and Team manager. They're planning to participate in rookie league in Korea this April too.
(P)kurOa vs TMjpg(Z) kurOa won the 1st match by immortal-sentry push. 2nd match on Frost with cross spawn, TMjpg denied kurOa's 3rd base and his counter attack with warp-prism completely(completely what? finished him? I think you're missing a word here). Then he started to engage with ultralisks with plenty of resources then switched into mutas as the finishing blow.
kurOa won 3rd match on Yeonsu by using Void Ray Push while taking a 3rd base. 4th match was kind of a chaotic battle... each player did cheese after cheese. Both still only had 2 bases at 15mins of the game. However, kurOa shut down TMjpg's lings by making a GW-wall and became the champion of this season.
kurOa won 100,000 Yen
TMjpg won 40,000 Yen
There was also LoL Grand Championship. Here's some photos of the other scene.
Later on, they placed an earphone inside of a headphone just like GSL style for each final.
-Environment for observing The event place is positioned from the view of front like this: Play Area and stage, observer seats, Curtain, Casting room and backstage. This is a photo of the observer seats. Casting room entrances are open at the both side of curtains. Commentary came from the left side of the curtain to the observer seats. However, you hardly can hear the commentary at around the center of the observer seats. Thus the audience while observing and shouting a little in LoL though, was very quiet just like in classic concert.
JCG Directer Matsujun addressed me about JCG interview on a later day.
-Why did you choose this place? It's not as famous as internet-cafes such as ICafe in Akihabara, WIP in Yoyogi.
I wanted to make streaming video more exciting this time. That's why we decided to use TV studio. For the people watching online usually, to show the player's smile and passion, I wanted to make them feel "This is different with the streaming I usually watch". Though SC2 matches turned out to be very quiet, I think we succeeded in making an interesting video like GSL and MLG.
-Why did the sound-problem happen in the 3rd-place match? We expected the curtain to block the sound, but once we arrived at the event place, we realized that the curtain is not long enough to block the sound from backstage. It is not intended that both sides of backstage are open.

I would look at the spoiler above instead since I realized I forgot to change some sentences on my first time lol. Best of luck! WOW Thanks so much your correction! Are you working as a teacher or sth? I know this kind of working consume a lot of time and effort. I changed my post as your correction. I realized my tendency that always forgetting put "the", putting "to" where they aren't needed. hey, np nope, not a teacher but I don't mind doing editing and such ya, you did have those mistakes but it's not a big deal. It'll come with practice once you get used to it and such so I wouldn't worry. Overall, I understood what was going on which is what's important. Best of luck!

Very interesting read nemuke. I found it interesting how the lol and sc2 prizes were equal per player - lol being 5x bigger for teams of 5, but it is the same for each person. The numbers don't line up as nicely in western events usually.
Even with some of your grammar errors the entire post is easy to understand. I hope you will do more reports of japanese esports events in the future, it can be hard to hear news from japan sometimes!

Awesome seeing the Japanese scene in e-sports. It'd be really cool if SC2 became more popular, like fighting games are. Thanks for the report / post!!

I noticed when I watched the streams live on niconico that people in Japan were more into LoL than SC2. During the SC2 finals, the viewers' interst in SC2 started growing once the SC2-savvy viewers started explaining the basics and what was going on (and that RTS like SC2 was the parent genre of games like LoL)... but a lot of the new-to-SC2 viewers understood better when related in LoL terms.
One can only hope for growth in e-sports in Japan; it would be nice to see a Umehara-class progamer in SC2 or LoL!
