i don't find that astonishing. if you drive a truck through the city it's just the same. i doubt anyone has ever driven off the road there or even scratched another truck.
as long as they don't speed that is.

When I was at Mallorca we were driving at these kinds of roads. It was pretty scary actually.
Sometimes the drps was like 100m and the roads like 3m wide, without any fences.
