This year I decided it was time for me to start taking my first foreign language, German! My ex-girlfriend conned me last year (when we were still goin' out) into taking it saying that it's easy. But... apparently I really really really suck at this considering this is my first C i've gotten in my entire career in HS. I mean I do my homework, and memorize my vocab (though they do seem to disappear after a few weeks). But, i get D's and stuff on the tests and it's really really really bugging me!!! RAWR
So really what I'm trying to ask is... since a majority of you started taking Foreign languages at an early age you guys probably know good ways to do well in it?
I'm just not adapting to the kind of structure of a class that a foreign language class is. So if any of you could give me advice on doing better that would be great. I mean, tips n stuff and study strategies you guys found most helpful and stuff. Studying is all me, but i just want to get the most out of my minutes of it.
Or any tips on just dealing with the differences in structure between the two languages.
btw-German is a great class, i just totally suck at it.

| in america, most dont start til middle school at the earliest. or at least most of the people who post here. now they started teaching at kindergarten, but its only fucking spanish -_-. you cant chose. the best way to learn is to actively use it. try finding a german forum or soemthin or other people who speak. |

Well, it helps to learn all the basic (I think) stuff real well and the structure of the language. If you forget say a couple of nouns or something like the bathroom, you can just look it up in the dictionary, but if you don't get the basics down and important words it can really screw you up later when you can't understand anything because of something you forgot from German 1.
I felt it helped when learning Spanish to practice reading the dialogue with someone about your level and just going over things in the chapter. If you don't understand something just ask the teacher or another person, even if it's a stupid question, because that's better than getting a bad grade on a test or making it harder than it should be because you didn't want to look stupid. :^P |

Don't bother w/ another language... You'll never ever use it, most likely, and you'll just waste your time. If you want to learn a language, you NEED, i repeat, you NEED enviroment. So either you go study in German or don't bother.
My dad studied English his whole life and he SUCKS, because he simply hasn't got the enviroment. I only learned english for 4 years and my english is better than that of dad's ten fold simply because I have the enviroment. |

I couldn't really disagree more on that There are lots of opportunities to go to Germany. German and English have a lot more in common than Chinese and English, also. Plus, even if he never gets particularly good at it, it's still cool.
Odds are, nobody here will ever "use" their ability at BW for anything later on, but tons of people still play it. o_O |
