Finals week at my school is almost over, (I might even have passed Calc. for Engineers, so woohoo) so I am about to have 9-10 days at home with a free schedule. I haven't had the time to read a good fiction novel (outside of one's assigned for classes) in a long time. I am into the classics, but I feel like reading something from a relatively unknown author. I just finished 'Oryx and Crake' by Margaret Atwood, which I had to read for a class, and I thought it was pretty good. Just looking for any suggestions of relatively unknown books that you read and were suprised at how good they were. Please explain, without giving away the story, what about the book made you suggest it. Apocalyptic/Post Apocalyptic Sci-Fi always gets me, but don't let that limit you.
Thanks. |

The Stand.....wait you only have 9-10 days. nm
......Oh, i really enjoyed "The Talisman" by stephen king if you haven't read it. a slight slight connection the the dark tower series but its stand alone.
Its about this 12-13 year old kid who starts having this wierd shit happen around him (birds threatening his life, faces in the sand screaming at him etc). Basically finds out that there is a parallel universe where everyone has a duplicate...except him, so he can go back and forth. I really really enjoyed it and you could finish it in -10 no prob
Amazon edit: shit looks like they are making a movie of it too ! IMDBLast edit: 2006-11-15 11:31:42 |

iNcontroL, I am not religious at all, so the second suggestion might not work. I read 'The Case for Christ' to give religion a try, and now I am even more confused than I was before. Any more info on why you liked the Martin series tho? Kennigit, sounds good, but I think you just took all of the fun out of it by telling me the story.Last edit: 2006-11-15 11:30:38 |

The Very Hungry Caterpillar It is quite a good read, and will definitely entertain the audience. What made this book catch my eye and stand out of the crowd of regular books is its informative retelling of the life cycle of a butterfly; from birth to maturity. It combines strikingly beautiful illustrations with sensational drama into a true work of art that you'll read and enjoy over and over again.

Well i think even on TL.net there are like 5 or 6 people who LOVE the Martin series. Easily my favorite books. They are fantasy books following a family as it undergoes the different relationships and wars of a fantasy world. Rivaling familes, rivaling factions, huge element of potential monsters that are kind of more a mystery. If you like Fantasy books at all these are considered the literal gold of that genre.
I have to do a lame paper now so maybe someone else will elaborate for me. All i can say is go buy the first book and i PROMISE you will love it to death. I have gotten tons of people hooked on them and I am very confident that if you enjoy a good book you will be delighfully surprised. |

Easily the best fantasy written since Tolkien.

QFT
I would elaborate, but one of the best aspects of the series is its unpredictability. If you've become jaded by the predictable plots and characters in most fantasy and sci fi, Martin's series should prove very refreshing.

If you prefer Sci Fi over fantasy, Robert A. Heinlein is a great choice. He wrote starship troopers, but his masterpieces are "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Time Enough For Love". They're brilliant works, but be warned that they're VERY UNCONVENTIONAL. If you're disturbed by incest, the paranormal or rampant promiscuity, they're not for you.Last edit: 2006-11-15 11:58:47 |

Anyways have you ever read 'Slaughterhouse V' ? its a book about this guy who sorta time travels around his own life jumping from moment to moment and is also in world war 2 and abducted by aliens. A lot of people like it. I didn't really like it. I did read it in 2 days though. |

Well, the main character of 'Oryx and Crake' is an old man that enjoys his kiddie porn, so I am not completely against the unconventional. I like being surprized by how far an author will go, but once I am disgusted I lose interest, so they have to maintain a happy medium. Atwood spent a lot of time at the line, but, imo, she never crossed it. |

L’Étranger (english titles: my preference 'The Outsider' and the more popular 'The Stranger') by Albert Camus. Its a short (1-3 hours) but an excellent read and a great place to taste existentialist writings and more specificly camus' excellent writings.
seriously, just pick it up an read it one night, its great.
P.S. I wrote a much longer post but it got lost somehow... P.P.S I read it a long time before bush stabbed at it. |
