So, i'm kinda getting used to the air here, and as i've said before now have medication that well i'm still sick, my mass headaches are lessened greatly. (I normally never get headaches, so it's been weird for me). Had some time to look around the city and China isn't all that bad. The area we are in is poor and all but it still has some great restaurants around with excellent food. (I've been eating chicken like the bird is going extinct and I want to make sure I eat the last ones). They spice their food really nicely here.
I say PGL kicks ass because, when we were shopping for and food and bathroom stuff like body wash / shampoos, I offered to pay more than once but they won't allow it. So we get my pills and syrups, our lassenges and shampoo and all that out of their pocket. The fact that PGL pays for other things that aren't necessarily "needs" is kinda cool and i'm definitely grateful. We get our choice of where to eat, though if it's delivery it's pizza or KFC. I don't know which is healthier, a chicken burger or a slice of pizza... (someone find that out for me? China seems to block a lot of sites!) Buying things in China is pretty cheap, but it's still a nice gesture that most other organizers definitely haven't provided in the past. I haven't had to pay for anything here.
Despite the location in the poorer area of Beijing, and some other minor things like having to ask for toilet paper (even at the event) it's really not so bad. Though I learned the first day make sure you do all your bathroom needs before leaving the hotel or you'll regret it. It's something i'm just used to now. I haven't seen a bug since the one I smushed in the shower, or the one that scared the shit out of me as I lifted the toilet seat and it jumped 4 feet high into the air (fell) towards me. The air takes some time getting used to, i'm still not used to it but I can feel myself becoming a bit more accustomed to it. So that's a good thing.
I've been in similar places before, so I think my anger may have been a bit misplaced and more came from exhaustion + bad ass headaches in my condition which makes me pretty abrasive. (I usually don't get headaches).
The past two days i've been happy as a clam and enjoying my stay here very much. Mostly due to extreme awesomeness of PGL's Micheal and the food every time we go out to eat. Chicken & lulu (like milk, but awesome when super hot), chicken & lulu, chicken & lulu.
So, I have a bed, some washed clothes, (extremely wrinkled They have no idea what an ironing board or a washing machine / dryer is here) clothes, medicine, food, and all the basic needs. I have come to smile at the small things that have been annoying other people as I am again back to my old self, taking things in stride. So with all the basic needs and none of it coming from my own pocket, I have no complaints.
For anyone who actually spent time to read this though, I definitely have some questions.
1. Why do Chinese users honk their horns so much? In Canada I almost never honk mine unless there's some danger like somebody coming into my lane and not seeing me beside them). I suspect some of it is to warn all the people on bicycles. But a lot more of it seems from impatience and a lack of manner.
2. 2 way street, 2 lanes. So drivers in each lane drive in opposing directions. Our Taxi drives into the wrong lane of traffic to pass a few cars while traffic comes towards us and we veer back into our own lane before head-on collision. So the question, is this fucking legal?!
3. Is toilet paper a precious commodity here?
4. Washers and dryers and ironing boards, do they exist? Last edit: 2007-05-26 23:03:40 |

Chinese people don't need traffic laws! Just drive in whatever lane brings you to your destination the quickest!
But yeah, the traffic laws seem really lax there. When I went over ther a couple summer back, on the freeway EVERYONE was driving in like one lane, or swerving to the other lane to get ahead of other people. Even the cops O_o |

1st question:because there is so many people in china, it is crowd in the street.and of course, most chinese don't mand the traffic law. 2nd question:it illegal. but who mand that. 3rd question:not at all.toilet paper is cheap. 4th eople always have a washer in their home.and you can find some wash shop in china.but most of us like wash dirty clothes by ours self.and most olders think that washers can't wash clothes clean... |

I live in beijing for 3 years, never been to the area where PGL located,It's about 1 hour driving from the downtown area. e-sport is a very small industry in China, many so-called progamers in china earn less than 100$ a month,a very low pay even in china.

testie i guess you dont smoke? otherwise you will not have the air problem for your questions:
1. Why do Chinese users honk their horns so much? A: That's pretty normal in China, I know it is less mannered. In some cities, honk is not allowed. Maybe beijing not.
2. Our Taxi drives into the wrong lane of traffic to pass a few cars while traffic comes towards us and we veer back into our own lane before head-on collision. So the question, is this fucking legal?! A: not legal. but taxi drivers often do that in beijng, because Beijing's streets are straight as hell, the taxi driver do that in order to save your money, otherwise you have to pay alot more.
3. Is toilet paper a precious commodity here? of course not, you can buy alot with 1 Yuan.but no toilet paper in public bathrooms. Many farmers come to work in cities, they sometimes take the paper away they are poor.
4. Washers and dryers and ironing boards, do they exist? sure, at home, not in hotels. In good hotels , they collect your clothes and wash, but i am afraid you have to pay extra money for that.
Look at the bright side of things, you will feel happier in any place. |

oh, let's read one more blog entry, it's secret at the moment!
I like Canadians except one Emlary, May 25 I like Alanis Morissette and Steve Nash. I like Canadians except one. The very early memory of Canadian came from a Hong Kong soap opera when I was five or six-year-old. I remembered one male character in the soap opera was from Canada and married a HK girl; what he bought for his mother-in-law after their honeymoon trip in Canada was a can of AIR from Canada. That’s hilarious to me because I could not understand why people gave AIR as present to others at that time. Oh, yeah. Canada may be the country with the cleanest air in the world. It's OK. If I make a journey to Canada, I would like to take a DEEP breath of its clean air. On the contrast, if a Canadian visit China, visit Beijing, probably the city with the worst air condition of the country, does he (or she) have to put on a mask to prevent potential infection? In case that he can afford, he has the right to put on a mask. Chinese police will never trigger a gun on your head if you put on a mask which makes you look like a bank robber. We need some humor. My big boss, an American guy who spent over 20 years in China, often flies between our NYC headquarter and Beijing office, and visits our Shanghai office once a month. He makes fun by shouting in our Shanghai office that "You guys should take some air pollution of Beijing". We all laugh. He knows China because he wants to know the country. He understands Chinese people because he wants to understand these people. He has an open heart; he sees shitty things as well as glamorous things in China. (Btw, I personally live in Shanghai right now and I don't like Beijing very much either.) 20-year experience seems too long for a 15-day tournament. That's right. Shitty hotel and polluted air will make you sick. You can't even think about your strategy for the next game in a logistic manner. What should you do? Tips! Your time is precious. And you have no patience to complain the bad condition of your room to someone who are unable to speak the fucking English and to wait for they arrange another room in a five-star hotel such as Ritz-Carlton. Try to find the closest budget hotel called Home Inns (pronounced as Ru Jia in Chinese). Why budget hotel? Because you are not a rich man! Home Inns is a budget hotel chain in China, which has been listed on NASDAQ (quota from Yahoo Finance: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=hmin) and runs 28 chain hotels in Beijing. All their hotel rooms look exactly the same with free broadband network access and 24-hour hot water. The average price per room per day is really cheap, which I'm sure is less than 200 Yuan (25 US$). Hopefully, civilizations will find themselves at home in Home Inns hotel. Working at a foreign company, I met a lot of foreigners in past one year. They are "odd" when compared to the Canadian I dislike. They are proud that they can speak some Chinese and they are willing to speak Chinese. They even give themselves decent Chinese names. These foreigners have not forgotten their own countries. They felt proud when speaking Chinese because they know they stand their foot in China. I may feel proud when speaking English in Canada, but speaking English in China means nothing. Oh, I can speak a little French. I think some Canadians speak French. If I have a chance to talk to Steve Nash, I would like to say SALUTE to him. I really feel sorry to you. Lose, and get back to wherever you don’t resent. You have been looked like a loser.

Calling someone a loser and telling them to get out of their country isn't very nice at all actually ZlyKiss. I wasn't overly nice as well so I am not saying it wasn't warranted.
But in all honesty Emlary, Canada's air alone is worth the trip. |

a friend of mine studied in shanghai for a couple of months and when she came back she was honking like every 30sec while driving. she said she got used to it in shanghai and they do it for example to warn someone if they are overtaking him. i guess once you lose the feeling that somebody is complaining or angry at you when you hear the sound of the horn it's alright.
anyway, post more about the tournament. what about jianfei and draco?Last edit: 2007-05-27 03:49:33 |
