I dont know about you guys, but I find this pretty shocking. Im paying around $30 a month for a 5mbit connection, of which I only recieve about 4.
According to the article in both japan and korea pay under $1 for each Megabit. Assuming they pay around $.80 that means for $80 they get a 100mbit connection..
$80 here in Canada gets you about a 25mbit connection (at least where I live) and you would almost never see the full 25mbits.
So I ask you teamliquid, how fast is your internet?
![[image loading]](/userpoll/draw.php?poll_id=3016) Poll: How Fast is your Internet? (Vote): <1 Mbits (Vote): 2Mbits (Vote): 3Mbits (Vote): 4Mbits (Vote): 5Mbits (Vote): 6-10Mbits (Vote): 10-15Mbits (Vote): 30-60Mbits (Vote): 60-100Mbits (Vote): HIGHER?! (pics or it didnt happen)
+ Show Spoiler +If you don't know how to test your connection go to Speakeasy.net and pick the server closest to you. You will get a speed in kilobytes per second, just divide it by 1000 to get your Mbit rating.
Edit :I wasn't thinking, for those of you outside of North America DSLReports has a great list of servers to test off of.Last edit: 2007-09-03 03:56:23 |

The internet I'm using right now is so slow, the page is still loading while I type this.
My normal internet connection is a shared 100 MBit. Usually I get up to 1 MB/s download-speed. My father however only has DSL 1000, which gives no more than 100 Kb/s. Still fast enough for most things. |

| The thing is, those of us in the USA and Europe are actually being hampered, internet-wise, by the fact that our countries have been rich for a long time. The reason is that, back in ye olde days, our countries built huge, well-developed telegraph networks of copper wire. When it came time to make the internet, people just thought "ooh, copper wire, let's use that", and ignored the fact that copper wire built for telegraphs doesn't really make the best interent connection. In Japan and Korea, they didn't have that, so they had to build a new network, based on fiber optics, specificically for internet, which works much better. |

| 100 MBit. Internetwork transfers I'm usually able to maintain download speeds of around 50-60 mb/s. Download speed is also dependent on your disc write speed, not only your internet connection. |

| True, but in order to max out a modern hard drive you would need to download at around 480Mb/s (60MBytes/s) |

| Turk, that isnt bad (compared to NA standards). That would classify you as a 2Mbit. Now try and imagine 60... |

I can't show right now cause I'm DLing a huge ISO file. Which fucking froze at 96%..
its about 1.5D/0.6U
I am using time-warner cable (So Cal) which was added on to our current TV plan for only 19.99$ a month.
seems like a very good price?
It doesn't surprise me that asian countries are leading in internet tech. They lead in almost every other tech (cell phones, computers, etc) by like 2 years.
Its obviously a lot cheaper to fiber optic-ize those countries because they are a lot smaller when compared to the entire US.
I'm sure the government and military has just as fast speeds though. They're dicks like that.
PS- Yet another reason to move out of the USA.Last edit: 2007-09-02 03:32:34 |
