edit: but check out a band called Conflict. i hate 90% of punk and all of it's subgenres but they're like the only band i've been able to consistently enjoy. they're more crust (ok well they are crust) than punk though, but i'm a genre whore so fuck me

My sister and one of my best friends like punk so I've got some experience with it as well. Try Bad Religion, The Living End, Refused, Black Flag to just drop a few names of some real punk bands (though black flag is probably considered hardcore/punk and probably not something to start with when you're used to Sum 41). Hope you find something from that list.
but if you're looking for more 90's "pop-punk" albums try:
Unwritten Law - Unwritten Law Rancid - And Out Come the Wolves NoFX - So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes Hot Water Music - Caution
You might also want to check out bands like MXPX, Pennywise, Midtown, Homegrown, or anything put out by Drive Thru Records. It's been a long while since I've listened to most of this stuff, so there may be a bunch of more recent bands I don't know.
finally a nice music thread :> To everyone who say "that's not punk" well.. no it's not and noone has said that either :O It's called punkrock for a reason! ^^
Anyway, here are a few great ones Goldfinger (awesome band!! some ska-influences but no horns) Strung out (may remind you of Rise against but these are better :> ) MxPx (3 member band, really fast-paced punkrock) Millencollin (swedish well-known band ^^) Pennywise (I don't like them but many do ;> )
If you like Ska-punk (the best kind ^^) you should def. try these Less than Jake (My favorite band! And awesome live! Anyone else saw them when they were in london?) Reel Big Fish (Lots of horns, more ska than LTJ) Buck o Nine (Awesome ska band.. check out the song My Town) Fandangle (not so well-known UK ska-punk band... still rocks tho ^^ They were warmup band for LTJ on two of the London-shows..)
For some more pop-ish punkrock groups: New found Glory Left front Tire SR71 Bowling for Soup No use for a Name Zeebrahead maybe.
And finally a really great and unique band that plays some kind of Irish influenced punkrock Flogging Molly
Oh wth, I'll throw in a random song aswell! Dunno about the rest of their stuff, might be worth checking out cus this song wins: Chixdiggit - Nobody understands me (the album is called Pink Razors)
Stay away from these tho: My chemical Romance (dunno if they call themselves punkrock but.. still sucks ass) Good Charlotte (hmm.. they just suck) Falloutboy (omg so bad ><)
Hope that helped! (Hottest picks: Goldfinger, Less Than Jake and MxPx imo.. and sum41 but you knew that already.. ^^; )

from the ones already posted, i'd recommend dropkick murphys, ramones (paved the way for punk, along with the clash and sex pistols), rancid, goldfinger (they do the best live shows youll ever see, omg!), pennywise
"The zoo could not confirm that Binky was the attacker, but only Binky had blood on his face following the incident"
I think you might like Pennywise and bouncing souls. I would recommend you to try: rise against and anti-flag, although their music is a bit different.
There is a nice band called "whatever it takes" - try their "a fistful of revolution" album, which unfortunately isnt too popular.
A nice way of finding music if you are a real beginner would be 'tony hawk pro skater' game music - I especially recommend the 3rd game. Usually there are at least few nice songs, it's a sort of a compilation.
Personally, I dont like millencollin, they have like 1 good song (happiness for dogs). Perhaps you could try 'a wilhelm scream' and '7 seconds' (I listened to them recently and deleted them, but you might like them).
btw. does anyone know any bands similar to rise against and blood for blood?
btw2. if you want to try something different, I reommend a band called 'good clean fun' - some of their songs are hilarious
