Elizabeth May (Green Party), Stephane Dion (Liberal Party), Stephen Harper (Conservative Party), Jack Layton (New Democratic Party), Gilles Duceppe (Bloc Quebecois)

Today is the Canadian Federal Election.

All you Canadians get out and vote if you haven't already!

Poll: Who did you vote for/planning to vote for?
(Vote): Conservatives
(Vote): Liberals
(Vote): NDP
(Vote): Greens
(Vote): Bloc Quebecois

Yayyyy.

OK for those of you aren't Canadian, the Conservatives are basically the Republicans, the Liberals are the Democrats, and the rest are just small parties that don't really stand any chance of forming government.

So today decides whether Canada will be ruled by the "Republicans", or the "Democrats".

Update: Aaaaaaaaand the Conservatives won, :/

At least it wasn't a majority (a majority basically removes all checks and balances against the governing party)

Well, you've got me beat. I didn't know Stephen Harper till a quick Google told me. I've always felt odd that everybody knows whats going on in America, but we ourselves barely know about our elections, and know even less about other countries.

I always vote NDP and they always lose. Today I voted Liberal because I really don't want Steven Harper anymore. I work in the arts industry (book publishing) and he proposed huge cuts, so fuck him!

biggest reason for you to vode ndp over liberal is simply this, Our parties get funding based on their number of votes, more votes they get, more money they get. Unless this changed in the last few years.

That being said, I'm with you in terms of not wanting harper in power.

Majority ain't happening, going to be another minority and I can't say I'm as displeased as others may be since I NEVER want harper to have a majority.

I don't think these are very fair comparisons. I'm not saying this because I feel like defending any particular Canadian party (our politics are awful in general), but anything even slightly resembling the Republicans up here would be so far to the right of our natural center as to be considered fringe at best.

In watching American politics, it's often much easier to draw a distinct line between the two parties and assume what their natural stance will be on most issues. There is way more grey area in our politics which I guess is just the result of having so many parties trying to appeal to such a diverse electorate.

Anyways, I promised myself I'd pull the brake lever on this post before I started ranting about our election process =[

edit: I gave up the dream of actually liking any of our party leaders years and years ago, so now I vote entirely for the local MP I like the best, regardless of affiliation.

I think Canada really needs a change. Too bad NDP doesn't stand a chance. I mean there is just no possible way any party can do a worse job than the Liberals did. The Conservatives are no better. Ugh Canadian politics is a headache.

I got some questions.

I thought Canada had a parliamentary system where you vote for representatives, who then elect a prime minister through a coalition? I'm confused?!

So do you guys have like two executives a president and PM? Or what powers does the president have?

What are the issues involved here?

What party represents what and how much of the vote are they likely to get?

also lololololol @ Hawk
