Axis & Allies--Free and Online

I'm a little bit surprised that there has not been a thread on Axis & Allies since it is an amazing turn based strategy game and most people here are into strategy.

Anyway, as many of you know, there are 2 official versions of the board game, Axis & Allies:
1. Original
2. Revised

They are both fun, but imo, the revised version improved the game as much as broodwar improved SC. You can buy the revised game at any board game store in any mall for around $45-50.

If you haven't played it, then you should! It is WAY fun. Google it and read about it.

Anyway, the important thing I had to share is that there is a completely free version of the game available for download online (Its called TripleA) and it follows the rules of the game perfectly. I am really impressed. The computer AI sucks bad, but then again, it is a free game. You can fairly easily link up to games over the internet with the built in function of the game.

But I warn you, people who play online are extremely Gosu. I consider myself pretty good at the game and I usually lose online.

Here is the link to download the game: http://triplea.sourceforge.net/mywiki

Here is a fansite for the online: http://aaazone.amicron1.com/default.asp
It has guides to how to use the game and so on.

Finally some screenshots:

And...on a side note, if you loved playing Risk as a kid (or just love world domination games), here is a very fun way to play it online....has a free demo (which you can use multiple times if you delete the necessary reg files):

http://sillysoft.net/lux/

"Lux" is the name of the game

If you pay for the game, you get to be ranked, host games, and win achievments and view your stats online.

Here are my stats: http://sillysoft.net/lux/rankings/user/Savio

Enjoy your world domination. I have absolutely loved both these games.

The free version just doesn't seem to cut it for me. It lacks the music, interface, and the overall feeling of the game

Sweet! I loved this game and played it as a kid, if you want to go at some games, i'd be down, though i'm not that good...

I only know some basic German openings, i know to kill UK's transport so you can basically control africa >.> (thats only for the first turn lmao) but yeah, sick game.

Have you played the revised map? This sounds like the original you are talking about. In the original, England is surrounded by only 1 water so it is relatively easy to take control of the water and destroy his shipping. In revised, England touches 4 waters and one is out of reach of anything but bombers.

BTW, the revised has some other awesome changes. Battleships take 2 hits to sink, takes were buffed, artillery is added, destroyer is added, and the map is changed around is awesome ways!

Here's a link with video explanations of the changes and opening strategies: http://www.morrisongames.com/

He has several good articles on strategy as well. This is a good place to beef up your understanding of the game mechanics.

We should play a game. I would love that. The game goes a lot faster online than when you have a board.

But I have to wait a week cause I have a very important test coming up.

My uncle was awesome at Axis and Allies, we used to play the computer game and he always kicked my ass and he stopped playing because it became to easy even though he played every country and gave himself every disadvantage.

Thanks for the heads up. I played this as a kid with no understanding of strategy at all. I would like to try it again some time.

The strategy is amazing for a board game. Check out http://www.morrisongames.com/

Has some good articles on overall strategy. But mostly, you just have to play it a few times with someone who knows what he is doing.

I think this is fun enough that I want a few more people to see the OP. Especially since this isn't a thread that stimulates a lot of discussion, but has valuable info for those looking for fun strategy games that are free.

Bump because of all the new people on TL and the awesomness of the game and having it for free.

Also people, this program has both the original and revised maps as well as several "online only" maps.

Enjoy!

Surprised I missed this thread when it was originally posted. Haven't played it in a few years, but I grew up with the game. My dad and his best friend would spend days playing games, over and over, in the game room. My dad eventually became a member of IAAPA, even having a weekly column for some site or another.

The game is great, and I highly recommend it to anyone willing to give it a try.

Soo.... are we setting up a TL game?

I'm in already! ^.

I'd be in for a TL game in TripleA.
I'm relatively new at A&A, so I'm not too familiar with the openings though.

So my story with this game is that I saw a guy at the library playing it, was looking over his shoulder, thought it was pretty interesting...then I let one stinking fart loose and the guy quit playing after being uncomfortable for a few seconds.
Get it by your hands...

Bump!

Can we start a TL game soon?
I'm tired of
a) stomping the newbie computer and my newbie friend
b) getting stomped like a newbie by the people online

I'll make a list of people who would like to play this.
Tentatively we'll be playing through the lobby, and on WW2 v3 1941, since that appears to be the most popular map. I'm quite partial to the NWO map though, but that one might be too intimidating for newer players.

So far people who are interested (post if you want to be added)
1. Jyvblamo
2. Psyonic_Reaver
3. Haemonculus (?)
4. nbtnbt5

We need more people ^^

I'm up to join you guys, although I just downloaded it so I'm probably going to be really noob at it.
